Apparently, according to Steven Rowe, there is a strong interest from Carlton who are willing to trade first round pick.

In isolation, Carlton's first round pick for McKernan isnt a bad deal. For us though after losing Tippett it's potentially a very bad idea.

You seem to be all huff and puff about telling everyone else they are wrong, how about telling us your magnificent plan of attack?

What strategy would you be using to gain a valued return in this trade?

We never had any hope of getting value given Sydney's attitude. It seem the choices have always been White and 22 or the PSD. The Club have allegedly chosen the former. On that there are arugments both sides.

Its all very well for the members to get fired up about this but we had little room to move.

Yep we can take the PSD option, which on balance I prefer, but its hardly an option that brings about a warm feeling inside.

Seriously? How many people would recognise the #3 batsman for SA if they bumped into him walking down the street? They might recognise players who have represented Australia, but players who only ever reach Shield level are almost anonymous. They get 3000 spectators to a game (Shield, not T20) and the games aren't even on FTA TV.

What you say only holds true for the very elite athletes - those competing at an international level, in a popular sport. Football is the exception. It's players at the club level who are recognised walking down the street, not just the players in the AA team, but right down to player #30 on each and every team list.

I follow Cricket quick closely so yes I would recognise them in the street :D

Same with any of the 36ers and United players. However their pay would also reflect some of their anonymity.

Professional sports is an entertainment business fueled by the viewing public. So obviously how much you earn will correlate to how big the team/sport is in the state/town/country and how recognizable you will be by the public.

Obviously State cricket brings in peanuts. By comparison other than the stars players will be paid peanuts compared to AFL which brings in the big bucks.

And how the hell would Mckernan net us a first round pick?
I don't know.. but if someone is stupid enough to offer it.. then where do we sign? We're going to have to be quick, have to get the papers to the AFL before they sober up, or come down off whatever drug induced moment they're enjoying.

Source?

Someone say it aint so!!!!!!

I know for a fact Mckernan went to the club late in the season to request a trade becuase he was frustrated at the opportunities he was getting. With Tippo leaving he was very happy to stay and fight it out with Jenkins for a spot.

I think the club will be okay with trading him because of this. Then like the Gunston debacle the club will be able to point to the 'big picture' of trade week and spin a good return for Tippett.

My objection is White is terrible and Mckernan is a far better prospect regardless of the extra 1st round pick. The return we get for Kurt is still a disgrace despite what we do after the deal.

You, as a sports nut (like most of us here on BigFooty) would recognise these players. I have no objection to that. Do you recognise though, that you are in a very small minority?

Basketballers might get recognised due to their height & size, but soccer players are largely anonymous in this country due to the relatively small following of that sport (compared to AFL and the Rugby codes).

Bad idea! Carlton's first round pick is 11! Where do we sign!!

God Neil Cordy is a ****ing w***er.

Just listening to 5AA and he can go get ****ed; he is trying to sell Jessie White to us.

Just missed out on a Grand Final birth, yeah that's cool but I think I was just as close to be getting selected as that campaigner was.

Sydney are a bunch of campaigners who can get ****ed.

I'm happy to trade McKernan. Deliriously so if we can get a first round pick for him.

That doesn't change the disgraceful outcome of the Tippett trade - assuming it works out as we're currently expecting it to.

One good outcome does not counter-balance one mega-disastrous one.

We should be telling Sydney - sell the benefits and advantages of Jessie White to Carlton and add your pick 22 for pick 11 and it's a deal.

Otherwise, get ****ed.

The whole deal will damage Adelaide's ability to negotiate and retain players for as long as we have the same people representing us in trade week. We are;

= Accepting significantly less for a player than they are worth
- providing ateam that we will compete against for top 4 with a big leg up
- Giving Sydney salary cap relief by taking a contracted player
- Failing to follow through on the threat to send Tippett to the draft hence making any future threats weaker
- Setting ourselves up for poaching by any club in the future where a player just refuses to go anywhere else

A friend at work who is a Collingwood supporter said that he would expect Collingwood to approach the managers of each top tier Crows' player as they came out of contract to try and negotiate a similar agreement from now on in. We will now have a reputation of weakness and softness. This has long term implications for our football team and is clearly against the wishes of the vast majority of supporters. Personally, I am starting to feel embarrassed about being a member of an organisation which demonstrates these characteristics.

Wrong, it actually does. We have stuff-all leverage with the Tippett deal. If we can jag a bloke who can come in when we're desperate (White) out of it, then get overs for McKernan, then we've made the best of a bad situation.

The deal becomes two first rounders and a swap of spuds for Tippett. Not terrible under the circumstances.

Do you actually believe what you've just posted here?

Adding White to any deal just makes the deal worse for us.

Though when you put it like this, it's hard to be too upset!

Of course, this is entirely reliant upon Carlton committing an act of gross stupidity, which would be most unlike Mick Malthouse.

Could we deal white to another club that might need him and take a higher pick. (part of a 3way)

Wow - that seems like a bloody good deal for McKernan.

22 and White for McKernan and 11 for Tippett doesn't sound so bad.

I know I'll feel different about this in a few weeks, but yesterday, for the first time ever, I wondered if there was another team that I would feel able to support.
