I don't understand this argument: we were the best for the year EXCEPT for the Prelim.

You either were the best side or you weren't. Otherwise, I could say, Freo are the best side this year except they haven't won any matches.

I agree it's possible that a team can be the best and not win the flag. But Essendon in 99 was not that team. They won fewer games than North, lost the same number, lost to also-rans in the prelim and only finished one game clear on top.

If Carlton had won the flag, Essendon might have an argument that they were the best side that year. But they didn't, and they weren't.

In another year, 18-4 might be dominant, if the next best was say, 15-7. But to finish 1 game clear on top is not to dominate.
