In the absence of any report I can see I have pinched a few words from The Animal Enclosure.
Report with thanks to The Collingwood Turtle.
Report with thanks to The Collingwood Turtle.
A closed session today was conducted at Goschs Paddock.
A positive sign was the sight of Sean Rusling early on the track about 20 mins before the AFL and VFL squads arrived.
Rusling ran laps and a sequence of 200 metre run thru's and he trained with the rest of the players for about half of training before leaving the track with his modified program.
Leon Davis arrived to speak the media about his new contract extension and was obviously very excited to be remaining at the club.
When the AFL & VFL squads hit the track, a running and short kicking session was carried out with the players split into various groups.
The kicking distances were elongated as the session progressed.
Notable in his absence was Josh Fraser but Nathan Brown did train and Anthony Rocca also backed up at training after playing on Sunday, which is great for the big unit.
Then the players were split into 4 groups with Brad Scott, Paul Hudson, Mark Neeld and Blake Caracella instructing the players in regards to different pressurised handballing drills with Michael Malthouse and Gavin Brown overseeing the players overall.
From observing training since May this year on a weekly basis, this was easily the most intense and physical I have seen the players from this type of drill.
The coaches obviously wanted the players to be very forceful and aggressive with their tackling.
Other sessions earlier this year have seen simulated pressure with little contact, but today there were numerous hard hits and players really seem to embrace and thrive on this style of training.
There was lots of vocal support from the players themselves complimenting each other even though some of them were feeling the pain of the collisions.
The next session was a full length of the ground, match simulation with a focus of using the corridor on most occasions, so much so Malthouse and the assistants stood on the wing forcing the players to go down the guts which really is distinct change from MM's old boundary line style.
This segment of training following on from the handballing drill was again full of passion and a willingness to tackle hard, and place inverted pressure with a midfield and defence roll up press.
The players were certainly not holding anything back and the coaches (especially Brad Scott) seemed encouraged with the player's eagerness to adopt this aggressive attitude at training.
This was a fairly long session given the intensity, lasting about 30 minutes.
Then the players broke up into little groups all over the field varying in having snap shots at goal to set shots with others playing kick to kick.
Nathan Brown appeared to get through training fine and Presti showed no ill effects from his head clash with Jonathan Brown.
Dale Thomas & Jaxson Barham were rested from some parts of training but otherwise it looked all fine from an injury perspective.

Certainly makes my life a misery.
