North should look at paying something like 600k of his contract for the next 2 years in exchange for a 1st round pick from a contending team. This would be great for all parties, as contending sides generally value cap space and elite players much more than draft picks. They would effectively be getting one of the better ruckmen in the game for 150k a year.

North value draft picks more than a player who probably won't be at their best when we contend again, we have over 2.5 million in cap space and can afford to pay his contract over 2 years in exchange for a higher pick than we would otherwise get. This banks cash for if/when Kelly comes home in '19 as was widely reported when he resigned. It also allows Preuss to develop as number 1 ruck, where he has when fit shown himself to be (imo of course) the most promising young ruck in the league. Plus we have adequate packup in Daw already on the list and the scope to pick up someone like a Crossley/Meek as a developing type.

It also allows Goldy to go for a premiership while he is still in his prime, which many of us (including the club) still think he very much is. His body is fine and not the issue, he has had some pretty significant mental issues over the last couple of years and has admitted that this affected his performance, however he is doing much better (due largely to off-field improvements) and in the back end of the year was slowly impoving, as evidenced by him beating Stefan Martin in the final round.

I reckon this is a win for all parties.

Why would GWS want a washed up over-the-hill plodder in Goldstein? Stick a fork in this spud. He’s roasted.
Highly doubt that.

Not many teams have a Preuss in reserve and Goldstein (when not sooking) is very handy.

Perfect sole ruckman with a change of scenery and the number 1 mantle. He just doesn't share well. Maybe it's a Jewish thing.

That's the problem, his years of handling the ruck load solo with large TOG could mean it has taken it's toll.
He might bounce and maybe it truly was just a down year but i am sitting on the fence at the moment as to whether he can regain great form,
maybe a slow year was exactly what the doctor ordered so to speak.

What were his knee problems last year?

Nothing in the injury. If anything some of these injuries at North have been excuses to drop a player on the verge of embarrassing themselves when in a coach assisted rut.

His poor form is usually related to being forced to share the ruck. They've been quite a tall side with ruck size key forwards and decent backup ruckman with a coach unable to choose a style/direction.
In a smaller side/another environment with responsibility back, can see him regaining his mojo as his endurance and age are secondary to his mindset.

So what is to become of Goldy ?
Do North play him in the ruck next season and risk Pruess walking for senior opportunity (there will be suitors) ?
Or does he become the most expensive VFL ruckman in history over the next 2 seasons ?

Probably depends how much Preuss progresses/dominates pre season.

They'll likely share the ruck for a while with Daw in the seconds (if Preuss shows as much as he did last pre season).

Losses will build up and they'll probably drop Preuss to see how Goldy goes solo then Preuss will drop form/get injured in the two's.

Goldy will play until round 16-17 when Preuss recovers or they give Daw a last hurrah. The usual sort of pattern at North.

If North don't go with Pruess next season you can only imagine the other clubs will be all over him like a pack of hyenas being out of contract at seasons end ...

Goldy will get 1st crack at the number 1 ruck - if his form holds up Preuss will need to bide his time. He is only 22 and will build into becoming a teams number 1 ruck.

Goldies last 2 games of the year were very good and starting to look like the AA ruck he was in 2015. A good pre-seaon and he can get back to being one of the premier rucks in 2018.

Yea, there's that. Care factor fairly low as it's more about waiting out Scott's contract and a few off-field developments.

The mediocrity and ineptitude of the leadership probably needs a bit of disaster/chaos to escape its cycle of hopelessness.

Would seem a very risky practice asking Pruess to bide his time in the reserves with him being out of contract at the end of the 2018 season .
That leaves the door ajar for other clubs and you can bet they'll kick it down ...

If Goldy is playing better football then he either plays as the back up ruck or in the VFL. He knows Goldy only has a couple of years left and his time will come.

Agree if un-signed by mid year he will have a lot of teams looking at getting him.

It's good to have a plan.

You have a pretty weird obsession with this idea.

Not the worst position to be in though, preuss will definitely get his chance to impress this year, with us looking at a bottom 4 finish I think the coaches will try a few more games with 2 rucks.

If Preuss continues to play well and other clubs come knocking, we'd be asking for a first rounder at a minimum. Can't see him being out of contract affecting that at all.

Could also see us trading goldy to a contender next year and paying the majority of his wages to bring his value up, then move forward with Preuss as our number 1.

Let's face it , no club wanted Goldy this year so can't see it next year .
If the number 1 position isn't given to Pruess , other clubs will come knocking and Pruess would be mad not to listen .
FWIW , i think Pruess must be given the job and unfortunately Goldy and his contract bound for the VFL ...

Things can easily change in a year, if goldy even gets close to back to the high level he's shown before, clubs will be lining up.
Why would preuss be mad not to listen? He's 22, and obviously seen as the long term ruck at North, and is in a position where his current club can offer him more money than any other club.
FWIW, your opinion isn't really that important when it comes to what the team does with its players. I'd still much rather pay goldy 800k a year to be a backup than lobbe 500k a year to play VFL

Nobody wants Goldy and his contract , do yourself a favor and accept it .
If North in rebuild are silly enough to play Goldy in front of Pruess then they will deserve it when Pruess accepts another clubs offer .
Port are covering 30% of Lobbe's contract .
Lobbe is strictly back up insurance as Goldy should be from now on .
Insurance is insurance , the difference is North are paying premium rates and Carlton are paying peanuts ...

So with the Blues rebuilding Kreuzer shouldn’t play ones and you should let a developing ruck play? Keep Kreuzer as insurance as he won’t be around for your next flag tilt?

Haha you're manufacturing this storyline in your own head. If we trade goldy, we'll be paying part or most of his contract to get the most value.

Preuss will play a majority of games this year barring injury, and will be in line for a very good contract from the Roos.

You're right though, insurance is insurance, and I highly doubt north are anywhere near the salary cap, goldys contract won't be an issue for us. It's all in your head bud.

Carlton don't have Pruess on the list .
North do and would be foolish not to make him the number one ruckman before another club does .

He for the next 2 years will be the most expensive ruckman in VFL history .
His VFL salary wont be an issue ?
List management 101 right there ...

His salary clearly isn't an issue for us, we made some massive offers to players this off season.

Not saying that the contract is a good one, but it's not like it's hamstrung us. Again, it's all in your head.

He's now stitched up until the end of 2020, so come one come all.

If Pruess came to Carlton we could move Kruezer on for draft picks or players as he is in all Australian form unlike Goldy .
When in rebuild its what you do .
29yo Gibbs landed 2 x 1st rounders
27yo Tuohy landed 20yo Marchbank
Henderson Yarran and Menzel all yielded great profits that will form the nucleus of the future .
Rebuild is not having 1 draft pick in the top 20 and your highest paid player languishing in the reserves for the next 2 years .
