Thanks knew it was a fast bowler involved. Alan Mulally left WA after playing U/19 for Oz and studied in UK and became a citizen and opened the bowling for poms.

Commentators talked about it during the third quarter. NZ GK played 14 games for Australia in 2014-15. Because he wasn't getting a game, he defected to NZ thanks to his mother being a Kiwi

Personally not sure I like athletes (especially in team sports) switching allegiance after having represented a country that many times before

Every 4 years I remind myself how consistent the Kookaburras have been at Olympics but only won 1 gold but won so many World Cups and Champions Trophies and other international tournaments.

Yet they get the 4 year cycle wrong for Olympics or have bad luck either with an injury, or bad call or some thuggish play by the Pakis in the 80's in SFs.

1968 Silver - lost final 1-2 to Pakis but won their first medal
1972 5th
1976 Silver - shock 0-1 loss to NZ
1980 Boycott
1984 4th - undefeated for 2 years, lost to Pakis 0-1 in rough SF, didn't turn up for bronze medal match. The Pakis roughed up Rick Charlesworth and he was so devastated he was almost useless in the bronze medal match
1988 4th - lost SF 2-3 in last minute of play after going undefeated once again, and didn't show up for bronze match
1992 Silver - lost 1-2, but a young side pushed an experienced German team. It was a great result
1996 Bronze - Favourites for gold as young team from 92 developed, but shock 1-2 loss to Spain in SF
2000 Bronze - lost SF in penalty shootout to Dutch who were favourites and won gold
2004 Gold - beat strong Dutch team 2-1.
2008 Bronze - were favourites, dominated group stage, but lost SF to Spain again 2-3
2012 Bronze - lost SF 2-4 to strong German team
2016 Lost 1/4 final - the rebuild begins.

Really want them to win it for the 2nd time. But the Spanish, Dutch and Germans will be lurking again.

Yes a tale of regular heartbreak.

Don't think the Spanish will be a factor this time. Germans and especially the Dutch are always tricky, and as underdogs very good at playing for penalty corners against the play to scrape a 1-0/2-1 result. Belgians also looking very strong just going by results but I haven't watched much of them.
 
Forgot to say what a great joy it was to watch the Fijians win the Rugby 7s gold on Day 5. The Fijians are the entertainers of the 7s but they are also brutal athletes. Hopefully one day their 7s dominance transfers to the 15s games and the All Blacks stop pinching some of their players (I know immigration).

Been watching 7s since the days when the Hong Kong 7s was bigger than the World Cup which had changed by the time the 2nd WC had come around in 1991. In those days the best test rugby players played the 7s, not specialists like today, and the Fijians were always able to beat the best, which they couldn't do in test matches.

Before Port moved to Adelaide Oval, after match functions used to be back at Alberton Oval and most players and a lot parents would attend. One night in 2011 when Port were poor and I had moved back to SA from nearly 20 years living in Sydney and SE Qld, not many people were coming back for the functions, I ended up talking to David Rodan's parents and ended up having a 20 minute conversation on Fijian Rugby and 7's in particular, and about Waisale Serevi their 7s captain and super star of the game as it developed between the mid 90's and mid 00's with his dad. I don't think he ever expected to have a long conversation about Fijian Rugby in Adelaide, when he regularly came over to watch DRod play.

He is as nice as DRod is, and he introduced me to David and Alipate Carlile, who I would have chats with over the next couple of years before the move to Adelaide Oval.
