What's your take on Hogan this year. I love him, but each time I've watched him this year, he's underwhelmed me. But I don't watch him as closely as you would.

In his second season of playing Hogan takes the best defender every week. He's still got a lot to learn, but should kick 50+ goals, and he averages 7 marks and 15.6 disposals per game. The only area of the game that he's down on from last year is his contested marking, which is still top 10 in the league. He's top 5 for marks inside 50 and top 10 for overall marks, which are both up on last year.

He gets far greater scrutiny than most 36 game players, but by most measures he's tracking very well.

To put things into contest Tom Lynch had 33 goals from his first 36 games and Hogan has 83.

Hogan's demeanor (wears his heart on his sleeve) ensures there will always be those ready to wack him for a sub-par performance.

Think Hogan's highs this year haven't been quite as good as last year, but people are still expecting too much of him. Clearly a gun but will take time (as all KPF's do) to get the consistent output at the lower end of his performances. Fantastic player to watch when playing well.... Wish Boyd had the same strut about him....
Yeah if Boyd had a bit more aggression/agro about him given his size it would make a big difference imo, he's potentially got most other attributes you'd want.

The trainers just need to squirt some beer on him pre-match. I hear that fires him up :D

Very well said, No one doubts that as it stands now it was overs for Boyd but at the time given the perception around him it made a lot of sense for a club on its knees to offer what we did to him.
No it didn't, there were a lot of people at the time who said that the trade cost and money for a young unproven player was completely absurd, and desperate. Even if he comes good in a few years, the price was still way too high.

Much like Jack Riewoldt. Superstar who has more people focusing on his facial expressions than what he can actually do on the field.
I'll take passion over a nice demeanor, thanks.

Cool.

Get back to me when an in contract Scott Pendlebury walks out in the midst of a player revolt against the coach and requests a trade to one specific club only.

Kind of like how Dayne Beams did, at exactly the same time as Griff?

Pretty sure that instead of shitting the bed and giving away our first pick with him for a second year player on a million dollar contract, we made the best of a bad situation and gained pick 5, 25 (Greenwood) and Crisp.

And how's that working out for you? 12th last time I checked.

I'm not sure how our current ladder position has anything to do with an individual trade made 18 months ago, just as I'm sure you'll agree that Boyd has nothing to do with the Dogs rise up the ladder. I was simply responding to a poster who tried to claim our club wasn't put in a similar, if not almost identical position as the dogs were with Griffen.

Please don't try to turn this in to some kind of dick measuring contest over respective ladder positions. Just because the Bulldogs (who I quite like fwiw) are looking the goods at the moment doesn't make them immune to criticism. The Boyd trade at the time looked pretty awful, and at this point nothing has changed to make anyone who initially criticised it really change their mind.

The Boyd trade will only really hurt Dogs if they lose good players to salary cap squeeze.

Boyd may not yet have delivered on his promise but quite a few doggies players have made spectacular progress in the last 2 years and this has meant that Boyd being a superstar would now be a bonus - not critical.

Beams leaving to be closer to a sick father is lightyears away from a disgruntled captain walking out on the club in disarray.

Not even worth mentioning.
I'm not sure why you think that the reasons for leaving are in any way relevant to how the club acted at the trade table. Both clubs were forced to trade players whom they didn't want to trade. Both players were under contract. Both were regarded as premier midfielders, both requested a trade to a single club only. One club salvaged at first, second, and steak knives, the other gave away pick 6 along with their player, for a second year player on a $1m contract whilst also paying their traded players salary.

The players reasons for leaving are completely irrelevant.

Youre right, looking back on the situation in 5 years youll see one club had the balls to get the player they needed the other took what they could.

Right now Id comfortably take Boyd over De Goey, Crisp and Greenwood for our list and Id expect that gap to only widen

I don't think anybody can sit there and say that we didn't offer Boyd this deal purely as a way of taking a potential mega star away from a club that was successful in poaching our uncommitted captain. The unfortunate thing is we should've pushed harder at getting Patton as it looks likely he's going to be the better player.

This is factually incorrect. Boyd might have requested a trade to "one club only" but that was only as a result of Griffen triggering the whole series of events.

Griffen was walking out to GWS, or retiring. Boyd was selling himself to any club in Melbourne that would offer him the most money at the end of 2015, and if Griffen hadn't triggered the whole thing, it would have been more likely than not that we would have missed out on Boyd at the end of 2015.

Not by any great measure.

I was saying Griffen nominated 1 club, not Boyd.

Would you take Boyd over Peter Wright and Jake Lever? Because in reality, that was your other option if your club was looking to fill their KPP holes. JDG, Greenwood and Crisp shouldn't be a part of this conversation if we're talking about respective needs of your club compared to Collingwood.

If we drafted Peter Wright, the extra money would have been nice. But I still feel Tom Boyd will be a better player. I mean, I would love to see how well Boyd would be playing if he had Tom Lynch beside him getting the oppositions best defender every week. I'm sure Boyd would have kicked a bag againts St Kilda's and Brisbane's 2nd or 3rd defender too. I watched wright on the weekend and he had one kick. Let's not write off Boyd just yet. Remember he's not even 21 yet.

Thanks for responding without bringing Collingwoods recruitment of different players to fill different list needs in to it. Very refreshing :)
I agree with you that Boyd will likely turn out the better player, and it's funny that so many posters have jumped down my throat despite me never actually having a dig at Boyd himself, rather than the deal done to recruit him. The real question isn't whether you think Boyd will be better than Wright, it's whether you think Boyd would be better than Wright and a player like Lever, who the Dogs were reportedly very keen on and could have taken with the pick they would likely have gotten from GWS for Griff (8 from memory).

From a value perspective, you'd have your bookends for the next decade versus the one key forward with a higher potential ceiling, not to mention the salary cap saving.

This is McCartin's 2nd year, but nice try, really. ;)

Same as the Watts situation, massive pressure on the guy.

When people get bored at laughing at him he will come along.

You'd hope it doesn't take him six or seven years though, like it has for Watts..

I don't think they'll lose any players but where it will hurt is trying to attract experienced players when they're in full premiership mode. His salary is basically worth two very good players that they could bring in to play a specific role.
