What do you guys think of the Tom Boyd trade, in retrospect?

From afl.com today:
"At this point in time, Redpath, given his ability to compete on a consistent basis, offers more than what Boyd can." - Ben Guthrie

The Herald Sun (March, 2016):
..."ONE is the No.1 draft pick being paid $1 million a year. The other is a chippie from Kyneton who had two knee reconstructions and was No.62 in the 2011 rookie draft. They are Tom Boyd and Jack Redpath and it’s not a given the million-dollar kid will get a game in Round 1 ahead of the bloke who might be lucky to pocket $200,000 this season."

The Dogs have Stringer, Redpath, Bont, Libba, Wood, Johannisen, Hunter, Dahlhaus developing into gun players that will need to be paid accordingly.

Do the Dogs even need Boyd? I have no doubt he'll be a star, but will $1 million a year come back to hurt them?

Redpath played great today but Boyd is a better player and offers more.

Redpath has also 4 more years in the system (where he did nothing in his initial years). Happy to extend that to Boyd.

Edit: That "$1m per season coming back to 'hurt us'" line really need not be posted. All young guns of note are signed to extensive long term deals. :sunglasses:

Redpath is 25. Boyd is 20. Little bit of a difference in expectation regarding consistency.

We've signed up all our young guns to deals ending 2018/2019. I think JJ is the only one in 2017.

Dogs fans bang on about how important he is to their structure, yet refuse to give him a game.
Pretty bloody expensive VFL player.
Bit hard to get a game when he's injured.

Hello uninformed one - Tom Boyd is out with a shoulder injury, has been out for 2 and will be out for another 2.

After that he will 'get a game'.

When did he have the knee reconstructions?
Dunno but I remember watching him spud it up in the VFL for a few years.

To his credit, he worked his ass off and started playing consistently, when he got promoted he usually made the most of his chances and was at times unfairly dropped.

Redpath is 25 and has an extra two years in the system. Hardly surprising he's producing at a greater level.

Boyd will be fine, it's embarrassing that people are sinking the boot in. Almost exclusively from supporters of two or three particular clubs, but not out of character for any of them.
Still only 20 he'll come good.. But not quite Jarrad Waite good
Another seven year contract should see him through to 33 - that's the peak age for big forwards, right? ;)

You've gotta splash out to secure future gun players, you can't wait until they're already there. Makes it so much harder to lure them away. It's a gamble, and Boyd has all the hallmarks to become a decent forward, time will tell.

He played every game this year until he got injured.

He will grow into his body and be a good player.
I don't think he will be in the best 3 key forwards though.
IMO he dosnt have enough tricks like the best ones do ala Buddy, Cameron, Roughhead, Keneddy, Riewoldt (x2)

Dogs took a punt on a 1st year, number one draft pick.

They had the stones to get him there.

Wether or not he kicks 800 goals over 12 years or only 450 in 6, at least they had a proper crack and got him there.

Gotta respect the dogs for that move.

Redpath had McDonald and Garland as opponents. Not exactly A grade defenders are they? Our backline is pretty poor. Jacob Weitering is already going past McDonald if we want to be honest. Let's see how Redpath goes when he comes up against Hawthorn, Geelong, and Sydney defenders.

If the Bulldogs are paying Boyd 7 figures, they won't be keeping him in the VFL for long. He has already shown really good signs, I'd want him alongside the others.
