It almost doesn't matter though at 1.7m per year. That's 10% of the salary cap. I'm astonished Saints are able to offer it.

We Have paid below the cap floor 92.5% for the last two seasons we could pay out at 105% over the next two seasons if we wished, we have as much cap space as a club could possibly have !

I agree that a trade cannot be forced. Any supporter saying this has no clue. If we match, in theory yes you could walk away.

However, in the extremely unlikely situation that we match that offer (we won’t and can’t).. it would get interesting because after chasing him so hard and finally getting a big name trade/free agent target to agree to come to your club after chasing so many and failing to get their signature.. I don’t think you just walk away. That would be an appalling look and make other players potentially interested in St. Kilda have second thoughts.

Despite what many people think, the optics around these situations do impact future players requesting trades, how player managers deal with that club etc. So the two clubs generally wax the system to get the best outcome for both clubs. He’s emerging as one of the best rucks in the competition and the one compensation pick wouldn’t be enough which only makes this situation all the more intriguing. This adds more fuel for the other 16 clubs supporters to sit back hoping either Carlton get screwed or the Saints blow a huge chunk of their cap on a ruckman.

Even if we did trade are you really going to get that much more than what you’re compensation would have been which would be a top ten pick . we’re not going to give a kings ransom in trade we want to continue hitting the draft which is why we’re going hard at free agents . TDK and Roh will work brilliantly. And we dont have one ruck we have four rucks. Two will go at seasons end, TDK will team up with Roh for a couple of years, then TDK will take young Dodson under his wing.

We are set for 15 years of ruck domination. But I suppose you will have Pittonet until the end of 2027.

They can only match the offer once it has been made during FA period. If they did match, TDK would stay. There wont be a need to trade.

The question is why is it the biggest war chest the AFL is ever seen?

Could it be a combination of;

1. A lack of A-Grade players commanding a high salary?
2. Years of being knocked back by other “big fish” - Weitering the latest to be offered a huge contract wasn’t he?
3. Other factors I’m too nice to mention .

TDK ain't Ryder. He needs to play heavy ruck minutes to impact. Ryder was just as competent up forward as he was in the ruck, TDK is not.

You really struggle with basic comprehension.
Never said Marshall would come. Just that we'd likely ask for him as part of the trade. Guarantee you the Saints would entertain that idea. They should be sacked if they don't. Would then be up to Blues and Saints to convince him to make the move. He's hardly going to say that he'd want to leave if you got Tom. There's too much water to go under the bridge before it gets to that point.

What don't you get about the matching thing?
It will be a simple convo between our list management team, Tom's agent and Tom. This is our biggest offer, we simply aren't giving you $1.7m. If that's what you want, you'll have to get it from the Saints, but we won't be letting you go for compo. We'll be matching and forcing a trade, but that offer is not on the table for you to take. You will ONLY be getting $1.7m from the Saints.
Tom and his agent will either agree on a match and trade, or take Carlton's lower offer.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. You can't "fake match."

If you match then TDK can stay or the Saints can walk away leaving you holding a $1.7m contract.
