Not top 5 IMO.

Gibbs, Gumbleton, Sellar, Riewoldt, Thorp are all much more likely to go ahead of him. They are all very special. Hawkins is in the next group down.

I remember this bloke had his grass roots in soccer. I used to play soccer against him and then he converted to football. At first he used to play ruck and was a *******, now it seems he's really taken off. Plays Key Position for Clarence, both back & forward... Biiig big boy! Much in the mould of his cousin. Pity we won't be getting any top 5 picks this season, because he or Sellar or Hansen would be good picks.

Yep...Riewoldt looks very very good. I would love him at WC.

Oh and I missed Hansen from my list above....the best of the lot :o

I think the thing to remember is top5 , top10 , first round is all subjective and its really varies to the depth quality in the year of the draft.Look at the picks in the super deep draft 2001. I have no doubt that Bartel is of a quality that would have been a top 5 player in years other than the one he was drafted. Steve Johnson certainly would have been a R1 choice in other years.Have a look at 2002, Pick 1Brendon Goddard, P2, Daniel Welles , P3 Jared Brennan. I say id rather 'The Jimmy' before any of these.

The 06 draft has the looks of 2001.Having seen Hansen play (TV) he is worth of a top5 place most years Id say, and the vibe on Gibbs is like wize.Add the others like Sellers and Gumbleton and its would not suprise that TH might have gone after top10, who knows maybe even R1.It just depends so much on whicj club has the picks and their personal preferences. Last year Dale Thomas zoomed to P2 from way outside the R1 because of a couple of important games but if Hawthorn had P2 would he have been P2?

The point to be happy with is we wont ever find out what TH will be worth in the 06 draft, he will be coming to Geelong as an R3 pick, and once on our list like Gary Ablett or James Kelly or Cam Ling it means little what they went for. Just be happy that his potential is like only very few young players have and Round3 , Round1, Top 5 ,what ever, he will be ours.

Exactly.

Tom can play, he may or not be better than Hansen, Thorp etc but in reality that means little. You guys have got him.

As soon as the draft is completed, it doesnt matter who went at #1 and who went at #50. All the draftees start of level and dont gain any advantage by going earlier or later than another player.

The point I was trying to make is that Tom probably isnt top 5 material at the minute. Thats not slagging him off at any stretch, its just through the virtue of the fact that there are 5 KPP whom are top shelf, I dare say all of which would have gone before Murphy last year at #1.

Where would you rate Tom in terms of if he was available for last year's draft?

I dont profess to know much more than most of you. I have only seen glimpses of each of the prospects, mojo is alot more upto date than me.

However as I said earlier, I am comfortable saying that Hansen, Gumbleton, Riewoldt, Thorp, Sellar would all be ahead of Tom. Tom would be roughly next along with some other guys like Eric MacKenszie.

When you put that into a draft perspective, I would say 4 mids would make the top10 along with the talls I listed (thats very rough estimate), so Tom would be 10- 25?
If this draft wasnt so strong on talls, he could well have gone earlier, its just that there is a strong group of 4-5 quality KPP in this draft.

Agree with all of that but as I sort of made reference to its still very early. Last year , Dale Thomas made made huge leaps in draft order by impressive play at the U18 Champs and then BOG in the U18 GF. Clubs are biased by performance in big games for eg. some say in 03 when Tenace fell to the Cats at P7, it was because he had a bad finals series in the U18's where as he was picked to go as early 2 most of the year.
So why Tom may be up against several other quality talls, if he has a good u18 Champs or plays some outstanding games etc you may find that the buzz around him will raise his appreciation, although as he is basically a lock to go to the Cats so its unlikely that the buzz will get to the Marc Murphy level.
As Ive said before in several different threads. I have total faith in our ability to maximize our picks and Im sure with the type of nuturing that we have put into Playfair,Lonergan and Egan that we can turn him into a quality player for us.

I went to the game on IR game on Thursday night and had another look at Hawkins. Coming along well and his work rate and intensity was definitely there. Would not say he has great pace off the mark but is definitely not slow. He has a developed body and seems to be even bigger this year than last and wont have a problem having to put on a lot of weight and losing some acceleration and agility that most need to.

60% ruck/40% CHF at this stage. 197cms and at that height might struggle to be a starting ruck but certainally palms the ball well from all I have seen of him. Just needs a few more cms but his boundary throwin work and around the work competing is a good standard already. Has a real desire to lay body on body and crunch the packs. Very good hands and a contested marking player.

I would have picked him at 5 in the 2005 draft. In the upcoming draft I would have him from 10 to 15. The IR is more about speed and athleticism and does not really suit a tall marking forward/ruck but he did show a good ability to change direction and to run and chase players and when to lead. Prepared to butter up on the ground and keep in the contest.
I have not seen Hawkins this year apart from that and will get to see him over the next few weeks but a few who have seen him more than me I was at the game with and thats about where they see him.
