First of all, Geelong as good as got the cup. Hawks the only real chance to beat you if Buddy and Roughead kick about 6 each. Cats by whoever in GF by 40+

Hawkins kicked 6 I saw in VFL a few weeks ago, I really rate this guy but is he any chance to play in this finals series barring injury. Lonergan 18 touches and kicked 2.4 surely can't be dropped on that kind of form. Has played the second tall role really well IMO and one thing he probably does better than Hawkins is forward pressure.
If Hawkins doesn't play prelim surly he couldn't just come in for the grandy.

Is Lonergan just keeping FF warm until Hawkins hits his straps or is there a chance he may be a long term option. I suppose Mooney probably only has a few seasons left at 29 but I find it hard to believe Hawkins would hang around on the fringes for another 2 years, especially if he misses 2 maybe 3 premierships.

So what I'm coming to is (feeling I might get some heated responses) would you trade Hawkins if a good offer came up? Would you trade him possibly along with someone like a Varcoe for Kerr? Adding Kerr to your midfield would make it beyond freakish and from your current team your only losing Varcoe from your side. This wouldn't hurt you as a Wojinski or a Gamble could slot back in seamlessly.

Your premiership window is open now and why not try to fully capitalise.

Just seeing how Cats supporters would feel about it...

Hawkins is our future power Foward, there is no way in hell we would trade him. Mooney & Lonergan are in their late 20's now so the club will be looking to developing replacements. Hawkins is that.

Don't want or need Kerr. He would be better going to a club that needs a gun midfielder and has finals potential. I am betting Collingwood is where he will end up.

Varcoe also is not for sale.

Bomber has been on record several times saying that Ottens was his last established player they will draft. They are only interested in developing talent.

that sounds like a fairly stupid statement on bombers behalf. its not like drafting otto was a complete disaster.

but i dont want kerr at our club, and really we have three if not four better mids than him already and the salary cap would explode.

Lonergan only turned 24 in May, I'm sure he hopes to be around for a few years yet.

Hawkins is only not in the team because Longas consistent solid form. 2 or 3 bad games then Hawkins would have been back in from his great VFL form at any stage in the last 6 odd rounds but that didn't happen - and one thing our club has been under Bomber is somewhat precarious when it comes to tall forwards so if it's performing definitely not going to gamble on a change unless we are talking the Ryan variety.

Hawkins will have a great pre season, kick a bag in a practice match and go back to being in the 22 early next season I suspect. Perhaps come next year we might look at trading Longas, but the man child is probably quietly viewed as an exceptionally required player on our list.

It wasn't a case of that. At the season launch back in March, he spoke about how he wants to bring in a culture of developing and nurturing "our own players"; ie. drafting them from U18's, stick 'em in the gym, season in the VFL, then progress to the seniors......

Obviously if something out of the blue popped up, for example, Joel Corey said that he was homesick, Geelong would accomodate him and what would be best for the club. At this stage, if the club trades, they will trade for draft picks.

When members of out back line start deciding to call it quits in 2 or so years times we might have to Longas up there with Egan and Taylor.

Of course by then the tomahawk will be in the system and be starting to hit his peak so there would be plenty of room for him up forwards :D

We will lose some of our tall backs in the next few years to retirement. I would not be trading a mobile 197cm player just because we have Hawkins in the magoos. There is no guarantee that Egan will be fit in 2009 and Lonergan could fill in as a tall defensive player if he was not first choice for full forward.

Nor would I be trading the likes of West or Mummy. Let other clubs find their own talent. We need to draft good young kids while we can. To make room on the list for them it would be better to cut players who have been at the club a number of years and have no real chance of playing regular senior footy.

You are free to speculate on who!

Geelong would be silly to move hawkins on before we have had a decent enough look at him. If any of the big KPP boys were to be traded it would be Lonergan, as I think the difference between where he is now and where he has the potential to be is large as hawkins'

So we do all the hard work, put some pre-seasons into him get his body right, get him mentally prepared for AFL footy and everything else that goes into getting a big bloke ready to play and you think we'll entertain the idea of letting go?

Hmmmmmm ..............NO, haha na seriously, no:D

gee, it may be good to see him miss out this year. Seeing how hard blake worked over the summer to get his spot, if hawkins does this he will come back a freak and the selectors will find it hard to say no to giving him a spot. If he played the finals he may see it that he already has his premiership medallian (touch wood) and he has lost some of his hunger.

Um, thanks for the offer, but no. We don't need Kerr, and we sure as hell ain't getting rid of Hawkins (or Varcoe for that matter).

Actually, I think it was a very smart thing for Bomber to say. Why would you think it is stupid??

Watch for Lonergan to go to CHB and Hawkins FF. Harley, Scafrlett and Milburn will mean Lonergan will be perfect for one of the Backline spots. He played Full Back in the 2's prior to his injury. Great job to be in but Hawkins will end up in the key forward post

It will be interesting to see if Lonergan can go back post his injury. That day he got injured he was playing back it was the first time he showed something.
It was him playing back that got him injured and I doubt Id be brave enough to still be playing yet he is. Could he really back into the packs like Harley does now? Not sure.

The thing is would a Mackie , Lonergan , Taylor backline be strong enough to hold key forward POST Scalett/Harley/Milburn and if Egan doesnt come back. I have my doubts.

TomL is still only in his middle 20's and has plenty of years left where as Mooney has probably on a couple left. If he plays on after that he may move to GC which might not be too bad for a list refresh.Ottens is a similar age. Anyway the point is Mooney is probably as close to being finished as the mature group on our backline.

We may end seeing the two Toms playing forward and we may still need to find key back. Now that Nathan has gone he would be close to our best setshot key forward and , for mine , it would be a shame to waste that on the backline.

Bottomline Tom Hawkins will not be traded for all the tea in China. He is a Father Son with huge upside and probably the key to us keeping us in Premiership contention post 2010.

Agree with most of what you said Turbo.

I have no doubt that Lonners has the courage to play back again. The question is where he is best used from the club's perspective. Until this year I would have said he's a better defender than forward, but you can't argue with his performance - he's basically on 60 goal a year pace, which is absolutely phenomenal.

I also wonder about our key defender stocks going forward. I don't know whether Mackie will ever make a key defender, and Taylor will be a very good player but not really the sort you can build a whole defence around. However, I think Egan could be that sort of player (and I'd rate him more than likely to make it back), and we also have a couple of promising new kids in the VFL in McKenna and Kangars. That said, I would not be at all surprised to see us draft another big key defender in November this year to shore up our stocks.

I'll play the other side of the story just for amusement's sake:

If we did swap Hawkins for Kerr, and Mooney and Lonergan stayed injury free for the entirety of 2009, we'd have an unbeatable team, and would surely win the 2009 flag. Remember that West Coast won a flag virtually just on the back of a midfield. We'd have a midfield of:

Ablett
Bartel
Kerr
Selwood
Corey

That would be the greatest midfield in the history of the game without a shadow of a doubt! It would be like the West Coast midfield of '04 - '06, but throw in Joel Selwood and Joel Corey for good measure! And we'd still have the best backline and a good forward line.

Hell naw, silliest thing I've ever heard. Hawkins will be better than duddy franklin, I have no doubt he'll reach the 1000 goal milestone by the end of his footy career. Not ever worth contemplating for 1 second, ludicrous suggestion.
