I disagree.

I think people are just over rating his performances because of such low expectations.

He's still a shit footballer.

Two 'fair' games in a row does not deserve a toasting.

But yes, he should definately play in defense, if he must play.

If he dominates Pavlich I will eat my hat.

He did really well today , I am one who has doubted him over the years , but the last two weeks he has come good . Good on ya mate keep up the good work !!!

A lot of people bag him out constantly on this forum, and said that it was only Gumbleton that he beat last week, but he did a great job today.

He hasn't 'made it' by a long shot yet, but he's playing in the correct position if he is going to contribute in the long term :thumbsu:
Heh, he only beat Roughead and Franklin....:o;)

As I said last week. He made mistakes , he is far from solid but certainly wasn't alone in fact Mackie and Kelly are very lucky they have so many good games in the bank. And he will get better and more confident the more he plays and really believes he is integral part of our side.

He is worth persisting with IMO. What he does is he balances our backline , Scarlett played out of the game a very dangerous player in Brown. Importantly he allows us another player who can hold the fort while others roll the dice and run forward. Did that happen with Taylor today , I'm not sure but what Taylor can be , and Mackie has done in the past is be goal threats , and he helps them be that. Also one weakness our backline has had , is the super tall forward. The resting ruckman type like Hale. Lonergan may have better chance against them because he is taller than our other defenders.

Fair? He only played on Franklin and when Roughead was on, got moved onto Roughead. The fact that he only had one goal directly kicked on him (that I recall) is an unbelievable effort, considering the space that their forward line had for most of the day and the speed with which the ball came down. You are an idiot

Some people said after last weeks game that he only looked good because he was playing against a below average forward. Today he did the job on some of the best forwards in the comp. Is really looking like he will keep his place and become another dominant tall forward in the Geelong arsenal. Good job to him and hope he keeps at it.

He was very good.

I said in the pre-season he would be a very handy backman this year and got bagged for it.

I think people need to look past his name and actually look at what he is doing on the field.

Very solid.

By the way last week mustn't have been to bad if you watched the Ess v Freo game, the commentators had big wraps on Gumbleton this week, Tommy held him to 3 Pozzies'

The way he didn't get ruffled by Franklins' palm in the face thing, and sticking to the job was first class, a la Taylor.
This will allow for more flexibility down back for sure.
Two games in a row!!
The important thing now, is they show confidence in him, and let him get used to his position within the team structure.

If you can still criticise him after that game today I think you should consider whether you really enjoy watching footy and watching this team.

He was great.

I have been strongly critical of him in the past but that is 2 from 2 performances I am proud of.

100% meto....spot on.

Now about Varcoe........:)

The two goals Buddy did get today where impossible to stop.

Lonners looked super-super mobile today, has he dropped a few kilos?

Looks 100% better playing backline, man we have some talented tall options back there, imagine if we still had Egan?

Sat in the Ponsford stand and 3 or 4 times today Buddy looked like he had Lonners completely done before he somehow got the spoil. I though he was brilliant today and it great to see!

Can't argue with any of that, but I must say I was very surprised that they left him on Franklin. Thought he looked very shaky early, but got better as the game wore on.

I'm still befuddled by why Thompson left Scarlett on Brown, surely Lonergan could have played on him just as effectively? It's not like Scarlett was getting tons of possessions either, it seemed like he was content to let him be taken out of the play. Strange.

But yes, no doubt Lonergan was terrific again. But I think Scarlett or Taylor should get first crack on Pavlich next week.

I have to say I was having a massive heart attack when I saw him on Roughead early and then Franklin, but I'm happy to admit that he played well enough to justify the matchups. Was great at getting the fist in there, and put on a great smother too. My only criticism is that he still goes to ground a bit (although he wasn't alone in the defence today) but he's put in another good performance. By no means earnt the spot permanently yet, but he's heading in the right direction.

Btw, it was really interesting to hear Bomber talk in the presser about the Lonergan match up freeing up Scarlett both physically and mentally to do other stuff. Clearly Bomber has determined that as Scarlett gets nearer the end (and I mean no disrespect by saying that) that he wants to have a third tall in the backline, whether that be Lonergan or someone else, so Scarlo can be freed from the key tall. Having said that, I still hope he gets the Fev/Brown when we play Brisbane.

But, I digress. Well done today Lonergan.

I admit I bagged him after last week, but he thankfully proved me wrong today and put in another performance. Franklin may not have been at his best, but Lonergan was against one of the best forwards of the competition and restricted him greatly. Cant ask for more then that. If he can pick it up, our backline will be extremely formidable indeed. Fevola and Brown? pffft! :p

played well but Franklin wasn't at his blistering best either

Buddy's had a full pre season and played in every pre season match.
Loners had one goal kicked on him all day, Buddy's bomb from outside 50.
Give the bloke some credit, cause it's due... :thumbsu:

Get a clue.
He dominated Gumbleton last week.
He clearly beat both Franklin and Roughead today.
That's not fair, that's very good.

Why don't you let your opinion of someone be changed by how they play currently and not of how they've played in the past?
I bet you were a Byrnes hater and a Ling hater in '06...
I bet you'll be in here hating when our eventual slide down the ladder comes...
