With what i understand, he has not played much football in the last 2 years, has had 2 knee reco's but as a 16 year old he was one of the best footballers in the country highlighted by a 45 possy game in the under 16 national comp, and 109 in the 3 games he played. He has been given a the all good after having heaps of medicals at draft camp. I want him, think he is what we need, he is a smokey and a little gamble but so was Judd and Selwood and look at them.

I don't think both injuries required reconstructions. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Also, it is worth noting they weren't on the same leg.

Correct.

Different legs, 1 reco, one less serious operation.

Apparently the report has come back very encouraging.

Wasnt it a Knee Reco on one leg
and a PCL on the other leg

I tell you having only seen some of his footage from that U16 carnival he looks an absolute freak, now I know he's played very little in two years, but think about it, how good must he be to be possibly still touted a top 10 pick even without 2 years of footy.

If you haven't seen the vid I suggest you all check it out (think DTM has put it somewhere). Once you do I'm sure everyone will be hoping, praying, wishing he falls to us at 11.

Haven't been this excited about a draft since 2005!

Go Pies!

Correct Swift could become the next Chris Judd/Joel Selwood or the next beau muston.

He could be anything but if he does his knee again he could be history, this is the gamble we are faced with.Mark my words he will drop to us.
But so will sidebottom i reckon.hard to pick between the two.
Sidebottom more asure thing but Swift has got the class.

Ok you talked me into it.We'll take PLAYER NUMBER *******,TOM SWIFT.

How good would it be if we select him, he comes along nicely, and we have a setup of Thomas, Pendlebury, McCarthy and Swift in the middle.

I think i read somewhere that both the knee injuries weren't a result from direct contact, which is a little worrying.

Could be Beau Muston or Joel Selwood? Fingers crossed its Joel.

Sidebottom = Solid AFL footballer

Swift = Potential Megastar

Gotta take risks to win football games, and premierships.

Swift thanks.

I must admit that Swift is the one I want at pick 11.

I'm trying not to get too excited though as we know what Hine is like. I don't want to get my heart set on any one player as I will only be disappointed next Saturday if we choose another.

Unfortunately that ship may have sailed. He looks the goods doesn't he.

I think one will slide, but I predict the Roos will take either Sidebottom or Swift before us.

Does anyone think that if both Sidebottom and swift are available at 11 we will take Sidebottom ahead of Swift? Was it Sidebottom that kicked 10goals in the granny? Are both matchwinners?

I think Sidebottom has superstar potential.

He's so so clever and skillful. He reminds me of Bartel.

I'd be thrilled with Steele.

Quite hard to work out what the roos will do.

They possess the biggest threat to us grabbing Swift IMO, but haven't really been linked to him.

So far they have been linked to Hartlett and Johnston. I think Hartlett will be gone.

I read an article on North's drafting position yesterday and it states they may look to a tall defender.

The rumor involving Johnston and North for sometime is that they are interested in developing him as a CHB.

Quayle actually believes Hurley may fall to them. May be a little far fetched but not out of the question.

Its not hard to see if you apply this logic of whom clubs have been linked to and recent rumors.

Melb - Watts
WCE - Naitanui
Frem - Hill
Port - Hartlett
Ess - Yarran/Rich
Carl - Rich/Yarran
Bris - Ziebell
Rich - Vickery
Kang - Hurley
Adel - Trengove

Obviously even a top 10 pick may throw up a lot of surprise.

I would be happy to see Hill and Yarran taken early, as this Swift a huge chance of falling to 11.

And then we'll probably take someone else.

I'd prefer us not to take a player as a gamble. Remember that guy Walker we got from WA (who was rumoured to be the equal of Glen Jacovich), however he had numerous knee injuries before coming to us, then another one with us? I remember reading that he had knee parts transplanted from some dead motorcyclist...we drafted this guy twice I believe. Thanks Tony Shaw!

It would be great to have a gamble go our way...but Collingwood doesn't seem get a lot of it. Lets take Sidebottom if he's available!

Different injuries to different knees. One was a reco and if you have seen the footage it is a freak landing that would have seen anyone do their knee, similar to the huge impact collision that Rusling copped to his shoulder that would have seen anyone do their shoulder but because he has history we worry.

The other knee was more minor I think.

His tested well at camp and hasn't lost any dash. No doubt will still take a while to get confidence and full mobility. He would probably have a year to develop in the VFL anyway, it's not like we need any of our draftee's to come in straight away.

I know North are pretty keen on him and are going through what I suspect a lot of clubs are going through trying to determine whether the extra potential is worth the extra risk.

This is exactly the way I see it. The gap to Hawthorn/Geelong is too large for us to be going the safe route. We need to be prepared to take risks.

And honestly, as far as risks go, the "injury-prone" risk is one of the better ones you can take. We already know the kid can play, it's just a matter of him staying healthy. The risk that I'm not as fond of is taking athletes who need to be taught to play footy. Those tend to fail a lot more often.

I'm definitely hoping for Swift at 11, but don't think he'll be there. Blease is probably my second choice based on what I've seen, but I think he's a riskier proposition tbh. Both clearly have star potential though.

We are still "carrying" Dawes who is a couple of years away from being 100% fully over his injury. Until then there is still a risk of recurrence.

We are also carrying Dick and Rusling.

I dont know anything about Swift -I'll leave that for others - but I do think its a massive risk to draft an injured player, especially when you already have a few youngsters on your list recovering from serious injury.

Bit of a negative outlook there.

Not sure anyone's ever taken 3.5 years to recover from a knee, as you have Dawes doing. He should be as healthy as he'll ever be at the start of this season.

Dick was a late-round pick, so he was always a borderline proposition even when fit (despite the ridiculous BF hype).

Fair enough on Rusling.

If Dawes is still a couple of years away from being over his injury, and he still manages to kick goals in the AFL, he'll be worth the wait.

Don't be surprised if North take the player we want in Swift and we take the player some mocks have going to them.. Mckernan

Personal opinion is that would be a huge drafting blunder and the sort of thing that we can not afford.

McKernan is a tweener ruck / kpp. His pace will be questionable at Kpp and his unlikely to ever be tall enough to be a main stay ruck. I wouldn't be drafting him in the first round as either a Kpp or a ruck prospect but it is his versatility that has him talked up.

Swift is not an injured player, he's fully fit and ready to do a full preseason.
