If you were a top 20 draft pick (15 - 20) would you rather get selected by Geelong at pick 16 and play VFL for at least a year (and who knows what in the future) or say get picked up by Melbourne with a good chance of playing several AFL games next year

Unless of course that number 16 is used on Ben Cousins. I couldn't see him being in the VFL too much.

I guess to put myself in a kids shoes ... Melbourne has no home, terrible crowds in a massive stadium, questionable facilities, crap senior players, not many great kids ... I'd take Geelong ... shit if I can't get a game then i'll go to Essendon hey, **** it

Geelong has one of the best programs for developing younger players already and they are looking to improve that with an academy styled process to be implemented probably with the building of the facilities in the new stand.

Interesting question but I think the ideal scenario for a draftee is one of the big clubs when they hit bottom. This year that would include West Coast, and Essendon. The kid gets the best facilities, a great opportunity to grow with the club as it climbs again. Are the Cats in this league? No because it would be too hard to get the opportunities.

although at the cats you do get to train in and with an outfit who has won a flag, something you wouldnt get at Essendon.

Pick 15 = Geelong
Pick 16 is reserved for the premiers.:)

Kids aren't too worried about this when they get to a club. They want to prove themselves and eventually become a best 22 player. Only then do they start to be motivated by premierships.

Anything can happen, as they say.

Selwood got his first game due to Prismall doing his wrist, if I recall correctly.

I think this is a big conundrum. It's the reason Prismall left and it's something we'll need to address if we don't want GC poaching lots of players.

To me the solution is (sorry if this takes things off track coz I know it wasn't what the thread is started for) is if we do trades with GC...rather than use them for drafts....ontrade them for good players in the 23-28 bracket. Towards this age guys are desperate to come to a club like us as they want to win a premiership....whereas young guys are just interested in 'making it' rather than being delisted without a trace...so due to how strong our list is, I'm sure at this year's ND there was a lot of kids secretly hoping they didn't come to us, which I can understand.
