Today I have torn up our Freo membership.
We have been passionate supporters/members of Freo since inception but have finally come to the realisation that there is a serious cultural problem at Freo that will not get fixed without a complete cleanout and total non-acceptance of mediocrity. That will never happen without devine intervention, there are too many people involved in the club whose egos are bigger than their desire for real success.
Being "Fremantled" is a very real phenomenon. It involves always having excuses - there is no greater excuse generated club or group of players. They only play when it suits them, they have the belief that everything will fall into place and then they will put some effort in and Freo will win a GF. Real life doesn't work that way.
It is through consistent hard work, not squibbing or waiting for the stars to allign that brings success. Freo whilst never having the cattle to win a GF did actually have some heart and that is what got us through the earlier years as supporters of the continual failure. But now we have the cattle to succeed but won't due to no-heart in the culture.
I pity Barlow, Fyfe, De Boer and a few other youngsters that are eventually going to be Fremantled in their attitudes unless they get to a real club at their earliest opportunity.
I do know what it takes to become a national champion in a physically athletic olympic sport, and Freo shows none of those traits. It involves never accepting mediocrity, always putiing in your best efforts whether it is training or actually competing - you learn by doing, and never ever making excuses or accepting excuses for non-performance. You can train yourself to be a champion just as you can train yourself to be an excuse making squib. Its obvious what Freo are.
