I would of rathered him at the time but Yarran has hardly played a game. Needs to be given time in the midfielder rotations to really show what he has got.

Excited by his talent but wouldn't mind either of the two...

If I hear another 'peanut' say or write that we would have won last night if drafted Dan Rich I am going to throw up.

Hindsight is always 20-20, but I would like to revist this debate in 2/3 years time ...

Yarran is the type of player that is a 'project player' ... I would like some of the uneducated 'critics' to go and study the NBA and NFL drafts to research what an 'project player' is ...

And if you read the under 18 reports last year, most of the judges said Rich and Ziebell were the ones most likely to have an 'immediate' impact, whereas on natural talent and abilty, Nick-Nat and Yarran were going to take 'time' to develop, but both have the 'biggest upside' ...

Some fans have been 'seduced' by the 'grass is greener' type of immediate satisfaction in Dan Rich, whom admittedly has had a fine season, but there is something incredibly special and explosive in Chris Yarran, and when he is ready to burst onto the scene (which may even take till 2011 or 12) we're going to regret ever doubting him.

We made the right call by taking Yarran, no question ...

The kid is VERY good and his left foot is one of the best in the comp BUT it is too early to say we made the wrong choice picking up Yarran. He has been awesome this year but who says Yarran won't be a star in 2-3 years time? I'm sure the club has their reasons for not picking him. As for last night, he didn't get a lot of touches but when he did he absolutely killed us. That IMO is better than getting 30+ and doing sweet f.a with them.

No one will deny that Rich was the best player going around the draft last year. But being the best doesn't necessarily mean he will be the overall best player to come out of the draft. He is a great player but Rich doesn't have much upside to him. I am in no way a supporter of Yarran, but he is a developing player and if we can get the best out of Yarran, who is in his first year, then he will be a game breaker. We can all banter and say we should've taken Rich but let's reassess this position in a few years time when the players of last year's draft have had a few years in the system.
And to the people who say if we had Rich we would've won, Carlton does not need a nother midfielder. In any case, the viable option for Carlton would've been Ziebell but that's another story.

Hughes would've taken Yarran over Hurley, Freo have seen the light & dumped their recruiter, Carlton should be doing the same.

nah Fremantle dumped Phil Smart last year, before the draft. He was demoted and Brad Lloyd was head of recruiting. This year, after the success of last year (Hill - pick 3, Ballantyne - pick 21, Suban - Pick 24, Clarke - 37, DeBoar - Rookie, Broughton - rookie, Pearce - rookie) we've moved Phil Smart on.

Brad Lloyd stays on after last years success story.

Jury's still out. Rich was always expected to win the rising star this year. Was short price favourite before the year began. Was always touted as the most 'ready made' footballer. Judge the draft in 5-7 years time. Too early to tell.

Strictly my opinion here, but....

I tend to agree with celtic pride. The NBA draft is exactly the mould to look at it in regards to the Yarran pick. I worked three years in the league (just got back this year) and have since heavily studied the AFL draft.

I believe Daniel Rich is as close to a finished player as any first year AFL player can be. What is he capable of adding to his game that isn't already there? I believe that there isn't too much more that he will add. He'll probably add a bit more of a tank, but that's about it. He's the Christian Laettner of AFL rookies. You knew what you were going to get with him from day one. Problem is you also knew that you weren't going to get that much more development out of him.

Chris Yarran is the Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady of the draft. He's the equivalent to the high school kid whose only expected to develop for his first year, two or three years in the AFL. The more you get out of them early on in their careers the bigger the bonus. If it doesn't pan out then it will hurt the club in the long term. However, if and when it does pan out you've got a player who will be instrumental to premiership football for close to a decade. What we've already seen from Yaz is about as much as what the club had wanted out of him this season (I believe). We've seen the flashes, we've seen what all of the hype is all about and we're all eager for more (as we should be). We know the skill is there. It's not that he was drafted and the talent was non-existant. We've seen as much as we needed this year.

What this year was all about is acclimating him to Melbourne, getting him to learn how to live as an adult in this society of ours and to get him used to being involved down at the Carlton Football Club. I believe it was mission accomplished with Yaz. Stephen Icke seemed to think so when he was speaking about him last night at the pre-game Carlton function.

This.

Yarran won't be at carlton in 2 to 3 years. he wants to go home to perth. he will be a star but it won't be with carlton. It will be with either west coast or fremantle

You are a moron and everything you say seems to be wrong, so thanks for the confirmation that Yaz will be a great player in Navy Blue. :thumbsu:

Why do you troll your own club, players and coach?

Seriously... why? Why would you want to look uneducated on a public internet forum?

It just doesn't make any sense.

Correct, and Stephen Hill will be a beauty :thumbsu:

Sorry, Daniel Rich is a Brisbane player. Please start threads about Rich on the Brisbane board unless there is a genuine trade discussion going on.
