I think you need a gun number one KPF stopper type KPD. Your midfield is very good to protect your backline, I'd say it's even better than our midfield especially when Dunkley and Treloar are fit and firing again. I personally rate Keith and he's pretty good at stopping the best oppo forwards but I think he's best suited as a second tall interceptor where he can use his intercept marking ability while playing on the second forward. Roughy would've been perfect had he stayed. Ben McKay would've also been a perfect get but he's re-signed.

  • Daniel Talia (197cms) would be a perfect get but I don't think he would come over with the phone gate thing with his brother. But if both him and the club moved on from phone gate and don't care about it anymore then he would be a perfect choice to support Keith down back.
  • Ben Miller (198cms) from Richmond and performing well at the VFL and will get senior games now Balta's injured. Maybe young an inexperienced but will become a gun in the future. Will be pushed out once Balta, Astbury and Broad are fit.
  • Sam Collins (194cms) OOC at the end of 2022 but would be a great fullback for you.
  • Harry Edwards (200cms) also OOC at the end of 2022 but stuck behind McGovern, Barrass and Rotham and will only play seniors when one of them especially McGovern and Barrass are injured. I personally don't want him to go though.
  • Alex Pearce (201cms) again OOC at the end of 2022 but is injury prone and maybe behind Brennan Cox in the KPD order. Was in AA form in the first half of 2019. No I don't think Hamling will want to comeback, even more injury prone than Pearce. I think you can get his body right.
  • Robbie Tarrant (196cms) a free agent. Maybe 33 next year but will provide experience for your backline, he can still play on the best key forwards. A bit of a Brian Lake type move.
  • Will Schofield (196cms) retired at the moment but if he wants to comeback again then the Dogs would be the perfect destination but it's unlikely he'll comeback. Will be 33 next year but still enough time for another last hurrah at AFL level before retiring AFL for good.
  • Darcy Moore (203cms) Absolute gun this guy becomes a likely restricted free agent in 2022, if you get him now then you'd have to give up someone like Dunkley or lots of draft picks which will put you into deficit when drafting Sam Darcy. You could also do the unthinkable in trading in Moore for JUH plus some draft picks considering Collingwood need Key Forwards. Yes you may think he's not ready but he's the number one pick and most guys in the top ten have already gotten a debut this year.
  • Harris Andrews (202cms) A dream get for any club but he'll be a Lion for life especially he's from Brisbane.

A second need in my opinion is a ruck. Martin turns 35 at the end of the year and English doesn't seem to play his best footy as the main ruck. I think English operates best as a third tall to support Naughton and Bruce. Players who come to mind are.

  • Rhys Stanley; A unrestricted free agent and out of favor at Geelong as Scott seems to prefer Blicavs/Ratogolea combo. Like English, he's also athletic but doesn't win as much hitouts which is fine as you midfield are very good at sharking taps.
  • Sean Darcy; Starting to become a gun player but seems to like the Dockers. If he does move back to Vic then he'll probably want to go to Geelong.
  • Lloyd Meek; Depth at Freo, with Darcy emerging I think he maybe gettable.
  • Jonathon Ceglar; Seems to be out of favour at the Hawks as they prefer going small as in no genuine second ruck and having McEvoy as their main ruck.
  • Mason Cox; OOC at the end of the year with Darcy Cameron ahead of him and the recruitment of two KPFs in the mid season draft and they may also get in another KPF to put a nail in Cox's coffin at Collingwood. Would be a good first ruck as he's shown back in R22 2017 and since he was Collingwood's number one forward, he can pinch hit up forward if needed. He's a much better tap than Grundy as it's more likely going to find a teammate unlike Grundy's taps.
  • Todd Goldstein; A gun ruck for North, not sure if he'll leave though as he's likely going to be a one club player.

Edit didn't know: Sean Darcy resigned until 2024 last week and I've added Lloyd Meek to the list..

Thanks for taking the trouble to write this up. It pretty much aligns with the general thrust of commentary here. Unfortunately in those two areas of need the prospects mostly fall into one of three categories - too expensive, unattainable or simply unappealing for a range of reasons.

Ben Miller might be worth a look as a KPD.
I'm not convinced we'll be moving on a ruckman in the off-season. However I wouldn't mind Sean Darcy if we did. No idea what he'd cost even if he could be prised out.

We could start stockpiling Darcies the way stockpile Baileys.

Good list of targets but yeah the Talia family will probably not want anything to do with them. There is also his injury which has prevented him to play yet this season. Sean Darcy just re-signed so he's out now. Meek or Treacy will be gettable.

There is a few others that could come into consideration.

Archie Smith is a RFA and is behind Big O, & Fullerton now. 25yrs old.
Likewise Fullerton is also coming out of contract.
Darcy Cameron is OOC at years end and.
Max Lynch also OOC.
Patrick Ambrose RFA.
Nathan Kreuger OOC but constantly injured.
Jarrod Lienert OOC at Port.

What makes you think that?

Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Best draft prospects ranked (afl.com.au)

Darcy rated as the #3 prospect this year at this stage.....

From the article:

Forward/defender
204cm/75kg
19/7/03
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

The newest player in the discussion for the No.1 pick. Darcy has pieced together an outstanding season, dominating as a key forward who can also play in defence and the ruck. The Western Bulldogs father-son is best suited to attack, as seen on Sunday when he kicked six goals in a best-on-ground display for Vic Metro in its trial game against Vic Country. The best thing about Darcy is his agility and athleticism for a player his size. He kicks goals from set shots, snaps, taking the ball out of the ruck, from ground-level pick-ups and everything in between. Recruiters are talking about Darcy, the son of former Dogs ruckman Luke, as the potential best prospect in 2021.

The outrage when we get a top three pick, right after getting the number one pick, while contending for a flag. It will be delicious

I’d be asking the question of Ceglar
I think he's a very good option in terms of the cost to take Martin's spot on the list next year (provided he retires). He's shown in the last few weeks that he still has a bit in the tank and has shown he's flexible enough that he can play in a successful team with whilst sharing the ruck (with McEvoy).

Ladhams might be an option too. Goes out of the team when Lycett plays at Port.

Ladhams is a forward/ruck - so if we are comfortable with running him and English 50/50 - in these spots, he's a good potential fit. Bit lumbering, but a good overhead mark and reasonable set shot (from memory). He's not brilliant at being a 90% ruckman though, he's an inbetweener in his role....

He’s a little bit English-style in that he gets a lot of possessions around the ground for a ruckman. Might actually be a type that Bevo rates

Any half-decent KPD not 100% settled at his club would surely be eyeing off an opportunity to join a squad looking likely to be top four for a few years. It’s about the only weakness in our line-up right now.

Managers worth their salt should be making discreet enquiries.

I maybe be completely wrong on this but I seem to recall some suggestion on the Port board that Ladhams hangs with some less than desirable types.

If we're getting delist/fringe adjacent players from worse teams, or players that are not unquestionably better than our own depth or developing players, there's no point.

Ambrose? Kreuger? Lienert? I'd honestly rather just back in Ryan Gardner long term. Lienert isn't even a key defender.

Hear where you’re coming from but if we were to actually target any of the fringe types being suggested I assume it would be because we see untapped potential and think we can get the best out of them. Worst case scenario they would just be extra depth and putting selection pressure on Cordy/Gardner, recruiting someone like this doesn’t mean throwing Gardners development out the window.

If we only chase stars we’ll miss out on handy pickups like Crozier, Duryea etc

Pick swap players
Pick 24 lipinski (Hawthorn )

If these players were untapped potential, they would be already getting games at their existing clubs for worse teams so I see very limited scope for them to be good players for our team.

If we were a worse team recruiting from a team higher than us on the ladder, fair enough. But our 30th best player is better than almost any club's 30th best player. We're a team that's going to be losing players this off-season, we should replace them with worse depth.

All that wheeling and dealing for a bunch of players in positions we’re already well stocked in and no key defender?
