They have to find something to melt over. Unless he wants to go to a team in a full rebuild he won't find more money then he would staying with us.

Richmond the only one in my opinion. But that would also require Richmond to slightly change their planning and go away from the draft. I still think they wanna hit the draft hard.

How is this a melt?

My theory is that if Dunkley indicated that, then the club knows it has a bit of wiggle room to get the others over the line rather than worrying about 20k

Even then they're still a fair way off success if you look at the age profile of their better players.

If we do manage to re sign both Tim and Dunks, I wonder where that leaves us in terms of cap..? We seem to usually do well re contracts and I’d be staggered if we’re at capacity.

Heck, Carlton even continue to somehow have an endless cap!

Dale and Daniel longer term will be better for us as you can spread it out

Both Caleb and Bailey got one more year then I thought they would but at least they are signed away.

There’s certainly a few mature names on the list that we might be forced to let go or if we keep them then it’ll be on unders due to salary cap constraints.

JJ, McLean, Cordy, Schache, Duryea to name a few. There’s probably $1.5 million on cap on these guys alone but all are replaceable. Obviously Duryea will either retire or stay on a cheap contract.

In what universe will they command anywhere close to 300k each? McClean's knees are probably cooked, JJ hasn't played all year, Cordy is crap, Scache is crap and will most likely leave and Doc is 31 they'll be 150-200k players on short term deals if they stay

They won't - hence that post saying there could be $1.5m saved in cap for next year

I can see Duryea playing out another year

The average annual pay for an AFL listed player is about $380,000. I've no idea what the lower ranked players receive but I would hazard a guess not many would be on less than $200000 unless they are rookies or newly drafted recruits (less than 2 years).

If you have many blokes over 500k you have to have some under 200k to counter that

It was always going to happen this way. A lot of these deals would be agreed upon in principle but because there were so many out of contract together, the club couldn’t really make them official until the rest were more or less sorted.

Of course there are going to be a handful of players hanging onto their careers for grim death during contract negotiations. But people are nuts if they think that clubs really have 15+ players out of contract without the majority of them having an in principle agreement in place to resign long before there is a public announcement.

The club nearly always strategically releases renewed contract news on a staggered basis during a slow news week or when the club needs a good news story to upsell the fans. I suspect that this news was always planned to be released as we went into a game after what should've been a quite bye break to get the fans up and about. However other events took over that narrative. So. Same, same.

There are 3 priorities left, English, Smith and Dunkley

Apart from that West and Keath and probably Khamis are 3 we need to keep but I don’t think they are at risk of leaving.
Keath we need as we have no other KPD near his capability and West and Khamis are the 2 developing or most promising players out of contract

Of the remainder they are accepting what is left of cap and I can’t see any of them putting their hands out for increases. As pointed out Duryea, Cordy and JJ will most likely be decreases on 1 or 2 year deals or look elsewhere.

At the end of the day we will delist / trade / retire 3 to 7 players regardless.

Stephan Martin is the only certainty atm

I'm not sure West will stay. If he's dropped this week I'd be looking elsewhere

Next, English. Then Dunkley.
And Baz, then...

These 3 are a must imo:
Bailey Smith
Josh Dunkley
Rhylee West

Pretty sure these 2 will stay on but maybe with reduced contracts:
Jason Johannisen
Toby McLean

Doubt any of these will be going anywhere so a lower priority:
Alex Keath*
Taylor Duryea*
Josh Schache*
Mitch Hannan*
Zaine Cordy*
Mitch Wallis*

Still basically unknown quantities so a basic contract:
Dominic Bedendo
Riley Garcia
Louis Butler
Buku Khamis (Cat B Rookie)
Charlie Parker (R)
Robbie McComb (R)
Cody Raak (Cat B Rookie)

Stefan Martin - should retire
