Playing football isn't the be all, end all and if you've got a ruthless state media looking over every little thing you do then I can't blame him for no longer feeling that spark.

Pretty clear he wasn't getting the best out of himself at the Crows. Has a serious illness in the family and wants to be in Melbourne.

Family keen Dogs fans. Would love to see him have a run with Footscray and see how it goes

With all due respect to McAsey, if we were running with any fringe KPD / draft hopeful at Footscray I'd chase Ethan Phillips 10 times over.
Really, really unlucky,

Cannot see McAsey playing for even a VFL team this year. He is still technically contracted to the Crows, unless they have torn up the contract fully. They are probably just not paying him, but will kept on the list until the end of the year. Unless they lodge with the AFL an early release so they can hit the SPP or Mid Season Draft.

The drama it will cause if he says he wont play for anyone, then lines up for another team.

Shame about his career. Was drafted highly and rated. Whilst he did have some limitations, such as general athleticism. But its clearly a lot on the mental side. Given the Crows history with the camps, and the fact they have some dead set tossers on their list. No surprise if the were not the right cultural or developmental fit for him. Would like to see him take a year out from the game and then try again via the VFL. Really wanted to se him succeed given the pile ons he would have gotten via social media. In the end it is just a game. Some people make it, some people don't. Cannot understand people calling players s**t. The fact they are on an AFL list means they have gone further than tens of thousands of people across the country.

Was clear he was trying to get out of the crows at the end of last year just didn’t have a suitor it seems.

Would love to give him a lifeline if he regains his desire to be an afl player in Melbourne at a club that he supported growing up.

If mcasey is able to play for footscray that would be ideal. If that’s still of interest to him.

I think it speaks volumes the only bulldogs player that has posted a Dunks happy bday message on IG is Adzy lol - our lions match up is going to be spicy
To be fair, I wouldn't expect many anyway tbh. Dunno if it will be spicy, but I think people just move on and people move on with people moving on.

An article in the Herald Sun about some out of contract players

WESTERN BULLDOGS

The Dogs lost Josh Dunkley but did exceptionally well to sign up the likes of Tim English, Bailey Smith, Caleb Daniel, Jackson Macrae and Bailey Dale.

The big-name recent signing was Cody Weightman, which means the elite crop is mostly signed up long-term.

Aaron Naughton has another two years on his deal, while Josh Bruce is out of contract but will surely try to re-establish his place in the front six before any talks take place.

More Coverage

Bombers no longer cutting corners on player developmentThe rookies and veterans leading the pre-season packNo time-line for Walsh but at least he’s ‘moving’ again
Sam Darcy hasn’t signed on past an initial contract expiring at the end of 2023 but the son of club legend and board member Luke isn’t going anywhere.

He could be anything, so his options are to accept a two-year contract for 2024-25 worth up to $1 million or hold out to see if his form by year’s end is worthy of a contract that rewards him for even more money.

If Darcy is commanding >$500k for 2024-25 then he’s had one hell of a season.

I've heard more than a few whispers that internally people think he's got a higher ceiling than Marra.
Pretty nuts - but the same thing was said about Bontempelli even after Macrae's outstanding early form (Jack was earning a lot of hype at the time).

We are lucky as a club both Marra and Darcy are Talented young players

My thoughts have been that Darce has a higher ceiling for quite some time now - nothing against Marra, I think he’ll be a superstar he’s got something pretty special about him and is a match winner. But honestly Darce is generational, a long way to go and will need a fair bit of luck in regards to his body hopefully holding out etc and may not peak for years and maybe might not even have that long of a peak, but we’ve honestly seen nothing quite like him ever set foot in the AFL and for that reason alone his ceiling is unmatched across the league IMO. Going to be a fun watch

With these two and Naughts dismantling defences for the next decade, whoever is playing in our midfield just needs to get the ball forward. Get some new young blood coming through with the West twins in the midfield. Turn young Croft into the next Lake and we'll be looking good.

Going to be super fun watching Darce and Marra develop over the next few years. If we can keep them long term as well as Naughts (who has a gear or two still to show us) then we have our premiership forward line locked away I have no doubt about it.

Lobb’s contract is until 2025 (I think) so don’t think we’ll see those 3 together for a bit. It is a mouth watering combination though.

You can start to understand why we brought in Lobb. Although we're very impatient for Darcy & JUH to become stars, in 2025 Darcy will still be just 22 & JUH 23 which is still relative babies in KPP terms.

Especially if Darcy missed his first pre-season and a bit of this one, while growing about 7cm in the 15 months following his draft

KPFs do generally take a while to develop too (personally I see Darcy becoming a forward by 2025). I do think he could be an intercepting defender before then (at times) because his reading of the ball in flight is elite. Innate football ability in that respect, which is no surprise as a 3rd generation player.
