Is it fair to say that up to January 1 this year Tim O’Brien had performed better than McAsey?
I know they are different ages but has McAsey shown anything other than being a KPD and a bulldogs supporter.?

Tim O'Brien was a known quantity. He'd played about 5 good games and 90 bog average games at Hawthorn. Was always unlikely that he'd suddenly become a consistent performer at 28

McAsey is an unknown quantity, other than being a very high pick and unable to get a game at one of the worst teams in the league. You're essentially taking a risk that he was mismanaged and still has the qualities that saw him go earlier than guys like Serong and Young.

I'd rather the second than the first.

I guess it comes down to identifying players who have underperformed due to factors other than limited ability. The Dogs seemed to have that ability with selections like Hamling, Biggs etc. Not sure we have it now with selections like Gowers, O’Brien etc.

Dunkley usual cookie cutter segment on ten news was boring but when they mentioned his future he said it would be sorted after the season. Not too many guys re-sign with the same team after the season.

Dal had some good and some bad. The 2015 draft was just a mess of poor strategizing and identifying. However 3 of the 4 are still playing and Williams & dunks are still currently at the dogs. 2016 had the chance of getting Bolton over Lipinski who was the pick after. I don't want to say it but I think Dal might of been 1 of the reasons for the lack of young indigenous players on the list back then.

Seriously. We're going to cherry pick examples.

Identifying talent isn't a zero-sum game. He hit far more than he missed and the hits were transformative even at very high or rookie picks.

Best in currently in the game.

It’s like in order to be considered good you must have a 100% strike rate, something no one has…

Drafting AFL prospects is a lot like picking stocks; it's impossible to discern how much of one's success or failure comes down to luck or skill. My suspicion is that there is some amount of science to it, but any difference between guys who do it professionally will be luck.

I do get you need a club that has to be able to develop no matter who is picked. But the way it is made out sometimes you might as well employ me professionally.

Dalrymple nearly always drafted stars with his first rounders and has had a good strike rate with finding stars and clear best 22 talent after the first round, like Daniel, Dale, Dunkley, Williams, McLean, Lipinski, Adams and now Rowbottom, McInerney and Warner, just looking at current players.

Time will tell if we’ve identified any players of the above level outside of the first round in the drafts since he left.

This is correct. If he doesn’t hit on those stars (Bont, Macrae, Naughton, English etc.) then we just become another St. Kilda (McCartin, Billings, Coffield).

It’s a star driven league and you need that core group of 4-5 stars to carry a team. Dal was excellent with his later picks but the fact that he hit on pretty much every first rounder he got his hands on is the separating factor.

Garcia, Vandermeer and Bedendo are all good players with a lot of upside, probably not currently on the level of those Sydney three but wouldn't be out of place in our list of players alongside guys like Mclean, Lipinski and Adams.

I’d have McLean (pre knee injuries) and Lipinski well ahead of those guys, Adams when he’s on the park has been a better performer too imo, but they’re all obviously years more advanced in development and the others may get there.

The thing with TOB is his 5 good games were as a defender and the 90 average ones were as a forward. I'd be taking the chance on the guy who has played well at the level then the guy who has shown nothing

Dunkley - Would fit into most teams starting 22.

Most? Jesus, name a 22 he doesn't walk straight into...

- Libba - would be a great small forward and playing him there could get a few more years out of him unless a gun is better.

Is a bog average small forward and only kicks goals when he's lost his man in transition / through work rate. Put an ACTUAL defender on him, and he should be nowhere near the forward line.
