It means he was better than Schache, Swee ect but its a postion of weakness KPF/2nd ruck ot sure it was that hard to understand.

Also Lobb wasn't that bad on the weekend provided a contests just missed his set shots on the day
Really? Thought his effort was 2020 Josh Brucian.

Yeah it’s certainly possible. Although, personally, I’d probably rather a fit Bruce stationed closer to goal without having to chop out in the ruck, with Naughton and Lobb as the higher options. Alternatively, if Bruce is still battling next year I’d rather have Lobb than not.
Then what to do with a 3rd year Mara who I think will break out?
I get that thought process but honestly I'd rather just swing a journeyman like O'Brien forward/ruck than spend money and resources on Lobb if Bruce is still battling or Darcy can't play at the level.
We have wasted a spot on him so might as well use him as a crash and bash if need be.

The plan for me though would be to take a punt on a good first ruck and get English to play his 2021 role if amenable. I think on exposed form in big games he can't be relied upon.

I've heard the Dogs put more relative attention / funding into medical / psych / conditioning / rehab than many other teams (source a medical person from another club).

Perhaps we will see some life in Bruce / Keath etc yet?

We are likely to lose Dunkley, JJ, Martin and Wallis who would be on a combined amount of 1.8m (likely more) of cap space.

The club has a history of players careers ending early due to knees (Redpath and Clay) and with the expertise of the medical team at the club, know to put in a contingency plan in the event Bruce doesn’t get back.

It’s not like acquiring Lobb is instead of anything else. At worst we are swapping a combined Wallis/Martin for a Lobb, or a JJ for Lobb.

Darcy will play down back. It’s not going to be an issue.
I'd rather keep Wallis and JJ.
Darcy is unlikely to play back to the level needed for us to contend. He is a bean pole with pace issues.

I’d hope not because our conditioning & general injury rate is bloody terrible

Gold Coast should be all over Hayden Crozier.

I dont mind Lobb as an opportunistic grab for cheap, but not if it impacts our ability to trade for the start KPD in his prime that we need (that may be a pipedream, but surely that should be our goal). I agree we will need more mids, but they are plentiful and good ones mature relatively quickly.

I think the context that people need to remember around trading for Lobb is that this year:

  • we used Zaine Cordy as a forward/ruck for 9 games, for 2 goals and little ruck impact;
  • we used Josh Bruce as a forward/ruck for 4/5 games for 1 goal and little ruck impact;
  • we used Josh Schache as a forward/ruck for 4 games for 3 goals and little to serviceable ruck impact:
  • we also used Stefan Martin or Jordon Sweet as forward/ruck for 3 games combined for 0 goals (Sweet kicked a goal as first ruck).

In 20 games this year we used someone as a forward/ruck for a total of 6 goals and, other than 3 games, negligible benefit in the ruck.

Darcy and Bruce missed at least 2/3 of the season with injury and JUH wasn’t ready. That compounded it majorly. Not to mention Bev’s refusal to play 2 rucks also made it worse.

As I’m sure the club would rather keep Dunkley over losing him, you don’t get to choose these things though and if we can address an obvious flaw in our team at a net gain in salary cap space by losing two parts (Any two of JJ, Martin, Wallis) then I struggle to see the issue. Again, if we bring in only Lobb and he costs us our ability to address other issues I’d agree with you, but he’s not going to be taking up a spot on the list that isn’t already taken up by a ruckman and Darcy isn’t ready and when he plays it’ll be down back.

They need a quick rebounder rather than an interceptor, hence the interest in JJ

I agree - if we don't get Lobb, we need to get somebody.
Even if it's just a 1-2 year proposition to give Darcy time.

I think Crossley has the highest potential and best age profile of that group.

I also think Crossley is a massive risk as I'm not sure how professional he is and is currently fairly overweight.

Crossley wouldn't cost very much, he is aggressive, mobile and can play forward as well as ruck, I think he even has the attributes to play KPD. We would just need to get him into shape and think he would be awesome for us.
Mumford was fat when he was rookied too - lost heaps of weight at Geelong, then Sydney pounced and trimmed him up a bit more.
If we do get Lobb, I'd still look at a rookie ruck as depth/development.

I agree and that was my preference for English this year but it seems to be completely off the table so I don’t even consider it now.

In an ideal world where all are fit and firing I’d be happy for selection to be a meritocracy and Marra or Bruce to potentially miss out if meant we had a dedicated forward/ruck. My gut says Bruce won’t get back to 2021 form and would likely be the one to make way and be the first backup.

But given availability is rarely 100%, good depth in this area is important and we’ve not had it recently. Brisbane this year have used McInerney, Fort, Daniher, Hipwood and McStay each for between 16-21 games. Suspect we could do similar with English, Lobb, Naughton, Bruce and Marra, without any of them really missing out other than by injury.

If we did our due diligence on Crossley and he interviewed ok, I reckon he's the sort of player we need.

Still remember his debut against us at Ballarat as an 18yo. Showed heaps of physicality, won a few contested possessions, laid big tackles and kicked a goal or 2.

I know he's had his issues and we'd have to check him pretty thoroughly, but reckon he's got a bit to offer at minimal cost.

You absolutely do get to choose these things though. Don't lowball JJ and Wallis and I'm sure they'll stay.
I expect that our offseason will be just that. We will lose Dunkley, JJ and possibly Hunter. We will bring in a 32 year old Jones off a year out of AFL football and Lobb on decent coin for far too long. We will make a show of trying to land others but none will come to fruition like Soldo, Wingard, Martin, Lever, May, etc before them. Then we'll hit the draft with some magic beans and an AFL average recruiter hoping for something decent.

I hope I'm wrong but this is how I see the club's future.
