What's our biggest list hole right now? We seem a lot less unbalanced than last season

Small defender is the position that I'd want to fill most, that and a dedicated wing are the only holes that I feel would need to be addressed unless we have shocking injury luck.

List holes:
Small defender
Fast inside midfielder
Wing

Excess:
Tall forwards (WTF?!?!?!? Am I doggies fan?)
Midfield accumulators

Targets:
Bergman (wing [value = late first?])
Callaghan (inside mid with speed [value = early first])
Xxxxxx (Small defender)? Salary? Picks?

Really need a small defender being targeted. Probably worth overpaying to get a veteran this year. Our window is now, now, NOW!

Yes, he’s a 19 year old. Got overlooked in his draft year.
For those who think all the quality will be gone (especially if we have pick 18 :)) you only need to read this. Harvey G got overlooked in his draft year and again in the mid-season draft of '22.

Good players get overlooked every year. Regularly a few of them find their way back onto an AFL list, even if they are 19 or 20 when they get there. Some players just need time to show their wares (Moz, MBoyd & Picko are classic examples).

If there's no player screaming "pick me" over the off-season we won't even know what type of player we need until mid-season (assuming it's to fill a void caused by LTI or mid-season retirement). So why go early? It might take them half of '23 to really be able to show their stuff. That's a perspective of the player that was not available to recruiters over the off-season.
Final point: many other clubs with a spare spot will be looking for a different type of player to us so they might not even be in competition with us.

Morris was 22 when we rookied him.
We should have taken Ben Hudson and Podsiadly when they were under our noses in the Werribee alignment days.

Oscar McInerney was rookied in 2016 as a mature age too.
Then look at Isaac Smith's resume, and remember Harry Taylor went in the first round as an overage.

There is mature talent available every year. I don't mind Scott on a wing either.

The Podsiadly one was potentially one which cost us a crack at a flag, and I’ve moaned about it here many times. In 2009 when we were all over the Saints but couldn’t capitalise, a tall presence (even if just to occupy their defenders) might have been the difference.

Got great value out of Dicko and Picko a few years later though. Premiership winning decisions there.

That was the wasted year. If we had of got big Barry 1 year early or taken a punt of Pods, who all smart watchers knew was capable, it could have been our year. We tried to rely on small forwards. A big forward and we would have been up by 5 goals and quarter time.

Narkle? Mid depth, too talented to not be on a list, and got himself fitter according to media. Haven’t seen or heard much about how Poulter is going. Seems logical to wait until mid season though I guess.
I’m not a big Narkle fan for us, but it’s got me stuffed how he isn’t on an AFL list.

100%.

Get Baz 2 years earlier and I think we just about make 2 Grand Finals.

2009 a waste, but geez we missed easy opportunities throughout that 2008 prelim.

That should’ve been a much closer game.

The 2009 prelim was a heart breaking umpire assisted robbery.

The 2010 prelim was the game where we dominated possession but just couldn't put it on the score board. Unfortunately the situation was partially self-inflicted due to the foolish and unjustified sacking of Jason Akermanis mid-season. If Aker had played in that game, I believe we would most likely have won. We just needed a proven goal scorer, he didn't need to be tall.

The posters lamenting the state of our small defender stocks seem to have forgotten about or are perhaps underestimating Hayden Crozier.

Interestingly the AFL.com.au article a couple of days ago regarding the highest paid players in the league, Bont wasn’t even mentioned despite around 15 players being named.

I don’t know whether it was an oversight or he genuinely didn’t feature near the pointy end of the list. In all seriousness when you take into consideration ability, leadership, marketability etc. Bont would easily have claim to most worth in $$ value across the whole league.
