i keep seeing people talk (in the media mainly) about switching Naughton to defence. What are dogs fans thoughts on this?

In my opinion, this would be the stupidest decision in afl history. Naughton is the best young key forward in the game.

You move failing forwards to defence, not gun key forwards.
There are very few left here that would be happy with it.

Personally his kicking is not even remotely good enough now to consider him as a long term option down back

Find this interesting didn’t someone on here mentioned that Naughton was signing a contract extension

Fremantle has Western Bulldogs star Aaron Naughton and Port Adelaide young gun Mitch Georgiades on its radar, according to Western Australia journalist Ryan Daniels.

Coming off an impressive rise to finish fifth in 2022, the Dockers had a busy off-season of player movement that saw the likes of Luke Jackson and Jaeger O’Meara join the club after Jordan Clark and Will Brodie arrived the year prior.

But Freo’s bid to add more talent reportedly won’t stop there, with Naughton, 23, and Georgiades, 21, who’re both from Western Australia, seemingly in the club’s sights in a bid to bolster its forward line that was a weak point last season.Naughton is contracted at the Dogs for two more seasons, while Georgiades, who was linked to West Coast last year as part of the Junior Rioli trade and other clubs, is on an expiring deal at Alberton.Speaking on Triple M, Daniels revealed the Dockers were pursuing moves for the two key forwards.
“I know for a fact there’s two names very firmly on the radar,” he said.

“Aaron Naughton … and Mitch Georgiades … West Coast and Fremantle are right into this kid. If he plays more than a couple of games in the SANFL, that phone is going to be ringing hot, just watch that space all year.

“Naughton’s a bit more difficult because he’s under contract for this year and next. But as we know, things change in footy.

“I have it on very good authority that watch those two blokes. Do not be surprised if one of them ends up in purple as soon as next year.

“These things can happen, just watch this space. There was a lot of very subtle noise about Naughton last year ... just an under current. Just watch that space.”
Naughton is coming off a career-best season where he booted 51 goals and 47 majors the year prior. Georgiades meanwhile regressed slightly last season with 23 goals and played several games in the SANFL after kicking 32 majors in his second year.

It comes after Fremantle football boss Peter Bell even confirmed to Daniels during an interview on Channel 7 the list profile is “never finished” and that it’d continue to look at trade, free agency and the draft.

Asked about potential interest in Naughton and Georgiades, Bell said: “We have a lot of conversations with player managers ... we have an extra interest in West Australian players for very obvious reasons, just like Victorian list managers would have an extra interest in our Victorian players.

“The names you mentioned are certainly players we look at.

“But I think as a club we’re at a stage with the environment we’ve created, where there are players who are expressing interest – and sometimes that’s just it – and sometimes they express interest for a whole variety of reasons. But expressing interest in potentially moving to Western Australia and playing for Fremantle.

“That wasn’t the case a while ago. So things have changed a little bit.”
If Naughton continues the 'curse of the previous season's leading goalkicker' that we've maintained since 2017, he might well end up at Freo come the end of this season for a proverbial packet of chips.

Crozier often matched up on traditional small forwards, and hence often played a classic small defender role. The fact that he has a great leap and is capable of matching up on medium sized, and at a pinch tall, forwards doesn't negate that.

People forget how good he was a few seasons ago. Remember there was a time Duryea was stuck in the VFL because he couldn't displace Crozier.

He's had some injuries, form fluctuations, etc. but fully fit is a proven performer at AFL level.

I think there is also a bit of evidence that he is a guy who lacks a bit in terms of self-confidence and needs to build it back up before he plays his best.
You might recall his first patch of games for us were far from great, but once he established himself at his new club, he strung together 2-3 excellent seasons for us.
A "few years" is an entire career for some players.

He's had an unfortunate run of illness and injuries, but even prior to this we were seeing him being shifted to various positions in search of a regular slot in the side. He now finds himself 4th or 5th in line for a small defenders role. This is not where a player looking for a new contract wants to be. I would suggest that he is currently surplus to requirements and would've been better off looking at his options at the end of last year.

A West Australian journalist takes a look at West Australians playing in the east and spins an entire West Australian centric narrative out of it.

How very West Australian of him.

The only thing missing is a moan about their share of the GST or a threat for Western Australia to succeed from Australia if it doesn't happen.

To be fair to the journalist he did identify a huge scoop when he picked up comments from Pete Bell that everyone else missed “list profile is never finished” and Freo will “ continue to look at trade, free agency and the draft”.
Wow clubs might now constantly review their lists and seek to make them better. Imagine that. It’s going to be a brave new world.

Peter Bell in September (direct quote) regarding Lobb:

"We had a conversation with Rory where we informed him that due to his contracted status and also the importance he has for our structure that we wouldn’t be able to facilitate a trade for Rory,” Bell said."

Too dumb to leave himself some leeway, e,g. "Would require suitable trade compensation if we were to entertain such a trade..."

Then folded like everyone knew he would.

So yes, Bell being late to the party on continual list review is believable!

From memory it was you who said he was close to extending? Any more word on that? Would love to get it out of the way but would make sense if he wanted to wait as his values only going to rise

it was he won't be going anywhere and will be our next captain

Eagles will come hard for him though

2017-2019 were dark ages. 25 games in a very short season isn't too bad and our goalkickers in 2021 were a pretty even spread with Naughton finishing on 47.

I don’t get the go home factor from him. He seems happy to jump on a plane whenever he is off to go see family and friends. Not like it’s that far, especially going business and flying back with the lay down beds.

Ryan Daniels is an excellent reporter and doesn't wade into too much of the BS most of the others do, pretty reasonable and even keeled tbh. Saying that, this is purely a of course Freo are going to target Naughton, they would be dumb not to, but besides that, not a ton in it really IMO.

He's also typically flawless with his WA intel. Extremely well connected and not one to look for cheap headlines. Totally feasible that Freo would be chasing Naughton, regardless of how realistic it is that they get him

That Naughton piece is alittle concerning, even if he has 2 years left on contract.

Didnt know there was "noise" about him last year.

On the other hand, i still get the feeling he's a good chance at staying and the club will be working on an extension this year.
