Buss isnt a full back and we’ll be disappointed if we expect that of him. He’s a very good mark with a smart footy brain and good distribution out of the backline.
Would like to see some more marking ability out of him at VFL level, but his body is so so underdone still so not concerned yet, everything else has looked okay, composed under pressure and a good user. Dunno how high his ceiling is at this stage but he still has a heap of development in him

Looking at the players out of contract i'd be doing the following:

Josh Bruce Delist
Hayden Crozier Delist
Bailey Williams 2 year + 1 contract
Lachlan McNeil delist
Anthony Scott 1 year
Roarke Smith delist
Tim O'Brien delist
Jordon Sweet 2 year
Buku Khamis 1 year
Mitch Hannan delist
Dominic Bedendo 1 year
Toby McLean delist
Taylor Duryea 1 year
Robbie McComb delist
Caleb Poulter 2 year
Cody Raak 1 year
James O’Donnell 2 year

Need to hit the draft hard to re-set the list with KPP/Wingers
Agree with this. I’m very bullish on Bedendo so would consider offering him 2 yrs although he probably needs more exposed AFL form to justify. I’m worried Duryea will fall completely off the cliff next year but given we don’t have any ready made replacement I’d give him one more year and take that risk.

I think his downside case is to be a very serviceable interceptor with good distribution skills for a tall. Potential to develop 1-on-1 contesting ability is upside.

I think that’s ok for a pick #13 when you compare it to what DGB and McAsey have shown for early first round KPDs in recent years.

That's a very low bar to compare him to.

JoD was definitely an unexpected shakeup in that Busslinger space. I have to wonder if we even draft Buss if we already had JoD on the list at that stage.

Of course they’re not like for likes, and Buss is younger, but if the plan for the next couple of years is Jones + Keath/Gardner + JoD, or just two of those, that does mean Buss is waiting a long while for a role in the seniors.

Ideally JoD becomes a 2nd tall kpd, Buss third tall. But trying to challenge for a flag at the same time in the short term could make that awkward.

I hope Buss becomes the intercepter we badly need but I would understand if true and we played ball with the eagles.

The Eagles will have a heap of list spots and a ton of cap space available over the next year or 2.

It won't be just our WA players they'd be chasing.Pretty much any AFL standard player would be enquired about.

Hardly a surprise.

Because we have so many young defenders and all 🤪

Sure it’s a low bar but both of those players went top 6 in the last 4 years. McAsey was probably a better chance of being a #1 KPD but his worst case outcome was not having the agility to make the grade at all. Not dissimilar to our very own Collins. Busslinger will play a lot of AFL football, the question is just what his role will be.

I think a JOD/Buss combination very quickly goes past a Gardy/JOD combination. Can’t see Keath going on past 2024.

Given Buss & JOD are good ball users, both move reasonably well & can be used as interceptors, that should be our clear 2nd & 3rd tall defenders long term. Jones should be able to hold down the 1 spot for the next 2 seasons which will buy the club some time to acquire a lockdown type to play on the gorillas.

JOD is more likely to be ready for a full time role next year compared to Buss due to maturity and body shape. JOD has a lot to learn football wise over the preseason but having those extra couple of years of natural body development should put him ahead of Buss for the short term.

With Keath, Bruce and Jones all over 30 (and Bruce likely finished now) there will be opportunities soon.

And while I think Gardy has won most of us over a bit, he’ll always be a spoil-first player who you’d rather not have with the ball in hand too often and is quite different to Busslinger.

I’m also not too worried about accumulating key forward candidates, even though with Naughton, Bruce*, JUH, Lobb and Darcy there will be slim pickings for Croft early. These things tend to work themselves out. Players get injured, leave, lose form etc.

I know, but Buss was a high draft pick. Almost all of the players drafted around him have played, Buss doesn’t appear to be close right now.

Point being he was a pretty reasonable investment being our first rounder, JoD changed the landscape a little, and we’re trying to win a flag while Bont is in his prime. How much time do we afford an asset like Buss?

I’m in no rush to see him off or anything, Keath likely wont play beyond next year and Gardner has gone backwards. There could be a place for him and if we lost him, our young defender stocks dwindle further.

If west coast were asking I’d hear them out, though. Depends on what we think Buss’ timeline is and what is on offer. We could potentially turn a long term asset into something that helps sooner.

Also keeping in mind that we recruited Keath and Jones to immediate effect, got games out of Gardner from the mid season draft, and signed JoD partway through the season from another sport - there are avenues to top up in that area.

Personally I would lean towards looking long term and investing in a few of our young guys, Buss included, but with Bevo around (and the age of some of our key players) we will always be pushing to win now, and using high draft picks on skinny talls doesn’t always completely marry up with that.

Not at all. Im worried about his 1v1 work.

Im wrong more then I am right.
He's an interceptor more than KPD. He was very good in that role at u18 level

You can’t write off a 196cm skinny defender after a season ! It might take him another three years to make it into the senior team . Or he might not make it …. Gotta give him a chance
