Dogs should be into Andrew Phillip's ear for a break glass in case of emergency option if Sweet leaves.
Nah, we should be looking for a player outside of the system or a late draftee to develop.

Replacing like for like is just a sideways move.

He did that last summer. It doesn't seem to have helped with the agility and speed issues that have kept him out of the side..

Im ok with leaving Mclean on the list for the reasons that you mention. However from a purely dispassionate list management point of view (like thats a thing) I'd let him go.
I thought he bulked up considerably

Last Summer?

Im not sure, but one thing Im certain of is how much running and repeat sprints he was doing on the day.

It's unfortunate for him but it just hasn't translated in the VFL games Ive seen him play. Even when he's clearly been a level above everyone else on the ground.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Western Bulldogs Draftees and Signings
Jedd Busslinger - Draft pick: 13
Charlie Clarke - Draft pick: 21
Harvey Gallagher - Draft pick: 39
Oskar Baker - Summer supplemental signing
James O’Donnell - Mid-year signing
Caleb Poulter - Mid-season draft pick: 10
Jedd Busslinger

Draft pick: 13, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The tall defender hasn’t been needed at the top level by Luke Beveridge and is another high pick yet to ink an extension. He has found enough of the ball running off half-back in the VFL, averaging 15.1 disposals a game.

Charlie Clarke

Draft pick: 21, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The forward has been left to put in the work across half-forward in the VFL this year but hasn’t been in the frame for senior selection. Showed his best in the last two weeks, gathering 20 disposals against Northern Blues and 19 against North Melbourne.

Harvey Gallagher

Draft pick: 39, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Hamstring problems hurt Gallagher early in the season and now his year appears over with glandular fever. He had 29 disposals in his last VFL outing, so has some ball-winning ability.

Oskar Baker

Summer supplemental signing, games: 15, contract status: end of 2025

The former Dee was signed over summer and immediately put on a wing. He has been a valuable contributor and inked a two-year extension in July.

James O’Donnell

Mid-year signing, games: 9, contract status: end of 2024

In typical Luke Beveridge fashion, O’Donnell was signed mid-season and made his debut not long after. The former cricketer has shown good signs as a key position prospect in his opening AFL games.

Caleb Poulter

Mid-season draft pick: 10, games: 6, contract status: End of 2023

Much like O’Donnell, Poulter was thrust into the Dogs’ side a month after he was drafted. The former Collingwood runner has looked at home in playing each of the last six gameson the wing and should return next year.

Most of the players noted above except for Baker are out of contract in 2024

You can’t write off a 196cm skinny defender after a season ! It might take him another three years to make it into the senior team . Or he might not make it …. Gotta give him a chance
Whatever happened to the "talls take longer to develop", "talls can take a couple years longer than mids to reach their potential" rules? Seems to have vanished for Busslinger, with some seemingly writing him off after not even a full season, where he missed a few games and had no preseason.

Bruce and Hannan are long term injured. Both are uncontracted at years end. Consensus on this board seems to be that they both would not receive contract extensions.
If that is the case and they are not extended, are we as an employer obligated to continue paying them out of the cap because they were injured while working for the club?
Or do we just cut the poor buggers loose?

They will still do rehab through the club.

I think if injury ends a career they are entitled to some form of compensation through either the AFL or AFLPA
But I could also be imagining that

Is Buss actually a good intercept defender though?

I haven't actually seen any good evidence of this.

Josh Weddle, who was drafted 4 picks after Buss, looks like a much better prospect to me.
Could easily be a Zac Butters scenario though. Taken a few years but has raced past others performing well year 1 out of the draft because he took time to develop into himself. Buss was drafted off an injury as well so this was never a year he was going to really fire up into the comp.

Dogs should be into Andrew Phillip's ear for a break glass in case of emergency option if Sweet leaves.

So you don’t see it with Busslinger, but rate Phillips enough as an emergency ruck.

How much angel dust did you have for breakfast?

God forbid people have different opinions.

This board has become too volatile this season.

Not exactly volatile. If anything, suggesting that a first-year player coming off major surgeries doesn’t look like he has “it”, is just trolling.

You’re welcome to the Phillips suggestion if Sweet does go elsewhere, but 95% of people would point out he’s just an unremarkable journeyman ruck with adequate skills that has been paid pretty well for being tall. Cross that bridge when we come to it if Sweet goes elsewhere, but I only think he would leave if there’s the promise of a #1 ruck role elsewhere.

Nah I could be wrong that was just my perception of his mass

Re Busslinger: Keep in mind that when he was drafted last year he was only 82kg. He's probably a few more than that now but it does explain why he has been beaten one-on-one by bigger opponents on occasions. Once he develops more upper body strength he will be much better equipped to match it with such opponents. He is learning his role well in the VFL and showing that he has the skills to be a very effective AFL player next season and beyond. Patience is the key.
