Pretty disappointing that we gave Gardner a 3 year deal and he’s already been jumped by a 21 year old who was playing cricket only recently (not slighting JoD at all in this comp).

The club pumped him up a lot in response to the criticisms he received, gave him three years (who on earth were we bidding against there?), and he’s gone backwards at an alarming rate.

He could be reasonable injury insurance, but not how you want a player to respond to what we did for him.

Ideally Keath and Gardner both are backup to Jones and JoD. I’d rather sacrifice height defensively than watch Keath/gards kill our run every time they touch it. And dear god do I hope we let ToB go.

This would be where we need a gun intercept type to provide support to Jones and JoD without negating our run out of the backline. Hopefully Buss can be that guy in 2024 - he has been really neat by foot at vfl level all year too. Ditto Cleary. Helps in that regard.
He's probably on peanuts. The years are not a big deal at all as he'll likely be adequate depth for that period, and likely over performing his salary value.

That's great - Jackson has also not been hampered all year, he has had good games scattered throughout an otherwise average season, again, likely because he is fit enough to get out on the park but doesn't have the ability to play to his best whilst having ailments as others do.

He MAY be slowing down, I'm not disputing that, but to suggest it's more likely that than him being hampered is disrespectful.
There's been unconfirmed rumours that Jackson has had a rib injury all year. Which is an unusual injury to carry over 21 games of a contact sport. It's also the straw that most in here wave around whenever he has a down game.

That he is slowing down and that its not because of injury. Is exactly what I am suggesting. It's not disrespectful. It's just how I've seen his performance this year. There's a reason that he's been moved away from the position where he made his bones as a 3X all-Australian. And that reason was on full display on the weekend when he and Daniel rotated to fill the big boots of Libba after he went off the ground.

If we can only grade players on a curve in direct relation to their past endeavours then all we'll have to talk about are fringe players who dont have the same exulted status on this board. These guys are always fair game for a bit of honest completely respectful discussion. Right?

What evidence did we have last year that he could no longer play the role that made him a 3x All Australian?
What evidence to warrant not playing him in his natural position this year?

The same evidence that the MC and anybody with eyeballs can see. Teams taking advantage of our one paced midfield that cannot impact the contest if they didn't get first hand on the ball. You may remember games before and after the debacle of the 2021 Grand Final where big bodied dynamic mids would put ours to the sword with great regularity. Is Macrae to blame for this, or is finished? Of course not. Could we continue with a starting rotation of The Bont, Libba and Macrae?

Absolutely not. Something had to give and that was the minutes that Macrae spent in the middle.

Macrae was one of the best midfielders in the game in 2021.
I agree with most of what you say but I'd much rather have Macrae on the wing than Poulter.
Bevo's essentially replaced Macrae with Treloar and the rotations, or lack of stay the same.
So basically I don't think there's any positive change by playing Macrae at HF.
Teams are still getting runs from the centre against us. Now more than ever.

Macrae is far to slow for the wing,

Watch the Freo game last year when he played a little bit there and Nathan O'Driscall absolute burn him and kick a goal with Macca just unable to keep with him

Edge, Spangher and Maddocks.

The 'Who's that?' of assistant coaching teams. Zero confidence whatsoever.
Considering this board used to decry our assistants back in 2017-20 I'm not sure we are the best judges on their ability. That group includes King, Hansen and Gia who are all real contenders for head coaching roles

At the time, we were wanting to see the club strengthen our assistants not get rid of the lot of King, Hansen and Gia. Instead we've gone down the path of getting assistants I highly doubt anybody else would want.
