So lose three first rounders for 1 player, and instead of adding youth to our only 1 young midfielder, we trade him out and replace him with another and have the same issue of lack of youthful midfielders?

Not the best suggestion. The dogs need to keep Smith long term and add to him.

This notion that as soon as a player becomes a bit of work we dispense or them needs to go. It's not attractive to anyone the club tries to bring in via trade and it would not be attractive to draftees either.
Agree with that as long as the player wishes to stay.
Hunter wanted to stay
Stringer wanted to stay
Players choice l am told !
Dahlhaus wanted to go
Tom Boyd wanted out of Football full stop.
If they want to stay work with them.
If it's a personality clash .Mediate.
Or if Smith just wants to be a HAWK take pick 3 and move on.No point getting a late puck next year ,if he won't comit long term. Then his heart isn't in it.
English and Naughton both give everything and would be bigger losses.

Agree on Smith he will still hold value even if he is still underperforming next year and wants out but given we are hopefully doing a major shakeup of everything now is the worst time to let go of assets like him when they are at their lowest value in a while,

Agree again that should be our goal because Brisbane's pick is most likely redundant now due to Croft,

Can't agree with the last point though Grundy is a very very niche situation for what has happened and what Port are missing but Jesus if you're suggesting Esava is them "bolstering" then if we target a Tomlinson type we are doing significantly better as he has at least shown some potential at AFL level,

The reality is we have to be careful over the next year or 2 with what we bring in cap wise due to the players out of contract next year but also just accept the reality there just isn't that much available this year to go after of any real talent level

Tomlison is 30 years old? and has had at least 2 knee reco's ?

We need to move on from putting players like this on our list.

Go to the draft and concentrate on Developing our own players.

DOGS HOPING FOR SWEET RESULT

THE WESTERN Bulldogs still have an offer on the table for in-demand big man Jordon Sweet, but the club doesn't expect the improving ruckman to decide on his future until after Footscray's VFL finals campaign.

Sweet has endured a frustrating season deputising to All-Australian ruckman Tim English, having played just 11 senior games in his five years on the club's list and having not cracked Luke Beveridge's AFL team since July last year.

However, the 25-year-old has become as one of the VFL's best ruck options and has averaged a competition-high 43.1 hitouts per game as well as 13.6 disposals and 5.2 tackles to emerge on the radar of a host of AFL clubs.

Speaking on AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable this week, Western Bulldogs list and recruiting manager Sam Power said the club remained hopeful Sweet would recommit at the Whitten Oval.
"We've had a deal on the table for Jordon for the majority of the year," Power told Gettable.

"He's had a really good and consistent year at VFL level. He's really improved his game, which is a credit to him and the work he's put in. It's just unfortunate he's sitting behind a very good ruckman and the All-Australian ruckman.
"Tim English played every game this year, which made it hard for Jordon. But we really want to keep Jordon. We see him as having a bright future, so hopefully we're able to get something done.

"Clearly, there's generally a bit of movement from a ruck perspective across the last few years. That seems like it may happen again this year. But from our end, our priority is to keep Jordon. We can see the bright future that he has."

Sweet will play in Footscray's VFL semi-final against Box Hill on Saturday morning, with the Bulldogs still yet to get an indication as to whether he will ultimately depart the club at season's end.
"He hasn't (indicated), no," Power said.

"He really enjoys the club. He loves the club – his old man was a Bulldogs supporter – so there's this connection to the Bulldogs. He can see that he's improved and the development has been good for him.

"At the moment, where it sits is that VFL finals are going on and it's really just allowing him to play VFL finals and put his best foot forward. Hopefully, he can take Footscray as far as they can go." – Riley Beveridge
There may indeed be an offer on the table, but what Sam Power is in effect is doing is upselling Sweet. In the hope that more than one club bites.

" ...his old man was a Bulldogs supporter" Sure Sam, my dad was a proctologist, but I didn't want to follow him down that black hole of a career. Just to please him.

We desperately need a wingman - what would the original and older Duursma brother (Xavier) cost us by way of trade/picks?

More importantly, would we be interested and do we have what's needed to get a deal done?

Could we make a play for Zane if we trade up to pick 4 and reunite the brothers?

DOGS DOUSE SMITH FLAMES AMID STRONG RIVAL INTEREST

Western Bulldogs list boss Sam Power has played down trade speculation around Bailey Smith, declaring the club sees the star developing into a true inside midfielder at the Dogs “for a long, long time”.

Despite being contracted until the end of 2024, Smith throughout the year has been linked to Geelong and, more recently, Hawthorn trade reports amid speculation of dissatisfaction after being pushed out of the midfield this season.

Channel 9 reporter Sam McClure told Footy Classified on Wednesday night Smith was highly likely to remain at the Bulldogs next year, but added the rival club interest in him was strong.

“Hawthorn would give their left arm for him right now. Hawthorn would give Pick 3 for him tomorrow … Geelong would give a lot for him,” McClure told Footy Classified.

Fellow panellist Matthew Lloyd added: “If Hawthorn are giving Pick 3, the Bulldogs just say: ‘How quick can we do the deal?’

“I’d be backing in the Pick 3 would be a better player over the next 250 games than Bailey Smith … He’s no Christian Petracca or Marcus Bontempelli – and that’s who you’d hope Pick 3 would be.”

Speaking on AFL Media’s ‘Gettable’ podcast this week, Power insisted Smith was an integral member of the Bulldogs’ long-term future.

“Obviously Bailey intrigues everyone is. He’s one that’s going to catch the attention and there was a lot more media coverage of that. But again, (he’s) contracted and extremely important player for us,” Power told AFL Media.

“Long-term, we talked about our midfield profile, there’s some guys getting a little bit older and Bailey’s that one that we really want to be that inside midfielder for us for a long, long time.

“He’s a fantastic player, his best football we’ve seen is really good and we know he’s going to have a good career ahead of him and improve from what he’s already produced.”

Some great insight from Lloyd there: "Bailey Smith is not Bontempelli or Petracca and that's who you'd hope pick 3 will be."

Well you hope pick 53 is going to be a Bontempeli or Petracca but they're the 2 best midfielders in the competition so over the last decade there have been a lot of high picks that haven't been Bontempeli or Petracca.

I don't think he is any use to us either was more to the point that Esava is crap and if people are pretending he is a good pick up clearly didn't watch him this year absolute liability

Esava is 25 yo so he still has time and Port may have a specific role for him and Cats liked him down back so not sure he is crap.

Esava isn't good and wasn't playing for Geelong who finished 12th and had injuries for a reason he is crap go watch his early games where everyone was kicking bags on him

Smith was a better player early in his career compared to Petracca. It took Petracca until he was 23 to be any good. From memory at the end of 2019 Petracca was gettable for a reasonable price. Bailey Smith is 22.

I don’t see the same upside in Smith compared with Petracca, but Lloyds comments show how incompetent he is.

This shits me, I'm all for keeping Smith because I think he'll get back to his best... I just hope it's with us. Lloyd though, does he look at Stats? Up to 2021, Petracca was an average footballer who took off in 2021. The corresponding year for Smith is next year, but up to this point, Smith had been a better player than Petracca;

Petracca up to the same point had more: Goals and Cont possessions

Smith has more:
Disposals, Clearances, better disp efficiency, more tackles, more R50s

Both have similar I50s.

Smith's upside is massive.

This, Port's key backs are as crap as ours so they are desperate. Esava's football IQ is almost non existent and they are givign him a boatload of money.

Port's preference for Esava makes me wary of chasing Tom Clurey.

You are been too harsh

We are not sitting on our hands we did a review.
Well I think we did a review. Does anyone know for sure if we did one? Who did it? do we know who the author is?

As for Baz, it all comes down to what the club thinks he will do next year when his contract expires and the $ he may command given we have others to sign up.
If club is nervous you do pick 3 now (if Hawks are prepared to do it)
We should have a review into whether a review was undertaken.

Yeah, I think Petracca played a lot more in the forward half during those earlier years but it's a decent point. It was pretty difficult to see he'd become the player he is now.

I'd give Smith - and most players who've at least shown they have potential elite upside - a chance to play under a better-coached team with an improved gameplan on both sides of the ball. Whether we get that or not is another question, but I'm optimistic he can be a lot better than he showed across the year.

He could do himself a favour and work intensively on his kicking though. It's a glaring weakness and will stop him from becoming a top-end player in the comp.

Take O'Sullivan or Wilson at 10 trade out 17 to next year. Unless it's used in trade period for something unexpected. Definitely need to develop our own we aren't a club that gets prime trades we just aren't that club

I don't think Duursma is worth that. Good first year, but has gone backwards.

Very outside, average (at best) numbers, suspect defensively and doesn't hit the scoreboard enough given his faults.

Has enough talent for a low 2nd rounder, but nothing higher for mine.
I'd happily pay 17 straight up if it weren't for his injuries.
If we could do 17 for Duursma and 37 (points for Croft) I'd call that a win.
