Gold Coast and Pick 4

“The Bulldogs’
hand is really, really strong. They have two first-round picks and the interest for them is to get up and grab that pick.

“But also to get inside the (expected) bid for Jordan Croft who is the father-son pick there. I have him at number 11 on my (phantom draft) board.

“They have to get inside there and not risk those picks getting swallowed up.

“Also Melbourne has a really strong hand to have a crack at it. Sydney, if they don’t trade those picks, will be in the market as well.

“But the Bulldogs and Melbourne are this leading contenders.”

Because 12 months on, when he inevitably requests a trade, our leverage is gone and we start begging for pick 7 as best case scenario.

We held Dunkley, he played his career best year, wins our BnF, we only limp into finals and we still have to bend over to Brisbane come trade time.

Infact that mega trade is almost identical to what Essendon were offering for Dunkley at the time. Yet we walk away a year later with a worse deal, picks 21 and 18-20 instead.
With the Dunkley situation you can't look only at the trade offer we originally declined from Essendon compared to what we ended up taking from Brisbane and say the club lost out. We also got 2 more high quality years out of him in contending years, including 23 games in a grand final season and a B&F season.

If given the offer of the above but you eventually need to take a slight downgrade in trade value, you'd still do it every time in my opinion.

Interesting if they’ve convinced Sweet to stay. You’d think a plan has been sold to him. I like him, he’s limited but there’s something about him.
What would any plan entail though?

They aren't going to shift the AA ruck to accommodate him in rotations and they aren't going to omit Lobb for the same.

If they're going to put limited minutes a game into another tall it'll be Darcy.

I'd suggest that if Sweet doesn't leave its not because he doesn't want to.

It may not be the most fulfilling way to play the game, but the security of a main list contract playing as a break glass option at Footscray isn't anything to sneeze at. All the while he gets to hone his game and keep his name on the radar of other clubs to whom he could be traded at a later date. It gives him security and it gives the club a back ready go ruck up and draft capital down the road without incurring much in the way of cost. It also saves the hassle of finding another rookie to fill his role.

So I can see why they're keen to keep him.

I can’t be bothered reading back through the thread to see if it’s been posted but ‘The Age’ says we’re after Nick Coffield

Played the last 3-4 weeks in the VFL this year so at least isn’t currently injured. If his body is good then I’d be pretty keen. He’s well worth a year or two as a cheapo pick up. The upside for us if he could play a role at half back/wing is quite high.

Coffield can be a long term player for us if he can get his body right wouldn’t cost much in a trade

Was a Bulldog supporter growing up, has been crippled with injuries but the talent is definitely there, worth the risk.

Bulldogs, Lions sniff around luckless Saint Nick Coffield

A second club – the Western Bulldogs – has expressed interest in hard-luck St Kilda defender Nick Coffield, one of a number of Saints whose future is in limbo.

Brisbane also inquired about the out-of-contract Coffield, the No.8 pick in the 2017 draft who has not played at AFL level since 2021 due to an ACL setback and then persistent calf issues.

The 23-year-old made it back for four VFL games late in the season, averaging 23 disposals, six marks and eight rebound 50s, and is one of a number of out-of-contract players on the Bulldogs’ radar, including promising Lion Kai Lohmann.

Rivals believe fellow Saints Hunter Clark and the contracted Jack Billings (2025) and Dougal Howard (2024) are also attainable. St Kilda are keen to invest in the draft, but none of this group is likely to score them a high-end selection.

Billings – who coach Ross Lyon views as a forward only – has mild interest elsewhere and would ideally like to move on after playing only three senior games this season, but key defender Howard seems more likely to stay.

Zak Jones, Jimmy Webster, Daniel McKenzie, Liam Stocker and Ryan Byrnes are also without a deal beyond this year. Restricted free agent Jade Gresham’s future is also uncertain, particularly given it is highly unlikely the Saints would receive first-round compensation for him.

Gresham has been linked to Essendon for some time, and The Age confirmed on Monday they are in the hunt for the talented forward. He is keen to play for a big club, according to sources familiar with his intentions.

We aren’t getting a big star this year. I’m content on taking risks in the trade period on players like Coffield who are cheap and may be able to work their way into our best 22.

The draft and better coaching are the most important things that are going to help us improve.

Getting some pieces around the side is very important. Hoping we can get another intercepting defender.

Doesn't appear anybody is. When the trade and free agency period is headlined by Henry, McKay and Gresham it's guaranteed to be a boring one.
