The Western Bulldogs’ bold determination to move up the draft order is driven by a desire to acquire either a star midfielder or hybrid forward at the top of this year’s Under 18 class, according to rival clubs.

Gold Coast’s first selection in this year’s draft (Pick 4) is up for grabs, with the Suns widely expected to part with the pick to secure maximum points and help them match inevitably early rival club bids on their top three Academy prospects: Key forward Jed Walter, versatile ruck Ethan Read and dynamic midfielder Jake Rogers.

Several teams have already been linked to a play for that Suns’ selection, including the Bulldogs, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney.

But rival clubs spoken to by foxfooty.com.au this week believe the Dogs are the clear front-runners for the prized pick and will put forward the best offer, as they’d be prepared to part with Pick 10, the first-round selection tied to Brisbane’s finishing position – which they acquired last year as part of the Josh Dunkley

He’s as fun and dynamic a prospect as we’ve seen for a while – and a player who’ll draw AFL fans through the turnstiles.

That’s the price you pay if the club wants to move up into the top end of the draft. Can’t see Sam Power trading out a future 1st he has never done it since he has taken over as a list manager

We couldn't trade pick 10, 17 & an F1 for 4 and say 31.
If we traded out the three first rounders we would have literally nothing left to work with to get anything else over the line.
The most I'd give up in conjunction with 10, 17 would be a future 2nd.

He’s only 1cm shorter than Pickett and Daniel. 3cm shorter than Baker. I’m not concerned, especially when overhead marking is not a required skill

Sorry to say but If Garcia and Gallagher are in our starting Rd 1 side then we’ve bottled our trade and draft period.

Be prepared for your version of a bottling then...there's not much out there for trade, and the draft is a complete mystery for whether kids will be ready.

With the Dunkley situation you can't look only at the trade offer we originally declined from Essendon compared to what we ended up taking from Brisbane and say the club lost out. We also got 2 more high quality years out of him in contending years, including 23 games in a grand final season and a B&F season.

If given the offer of the above but you eventually need to take a slight downgrade in trade value, you'd still do it every time in my opinion.

Dunks did not play 23 games in 2021. He missed 2/3rds of the year with the shoulder. From memory he played the first 6 games and the last 4 H & A games then 4 finals. Whilst he was crucial to the GF run, in hindsight I think we would take the Essendon offer if we had our time again.

2022 he was great no doubting that.
