Cal Twomey was categoric again this morning in shutting down any chance of a Butters move this year.

If that’s the case, and with not a lot left over with Wilkie staying. I’d offer our 2nd for Butts and move on if they reject it.

The only thing worst than going in to next season with the same list, is going in with a couple of extra B Graders and no 1st round pick.

There's one thing that frustrates the hell out of me.

Merrett is contracted but all assume 'that'll just get done' to the Hawks.

So why can't we get a contracted Butts or Butters or Wilkie?

Ours always fall through. Need to go harder and be ruthless. Get them to do a Merrett where it's impossible to go back.

Give up a first for Butts and if that doesn't happen throw that and everything else at Butters.

Be bold and aggressive and don't let the other club beat us.
Because Merrett and his management team have pushed the trade much harder and blown things up through the media which Wilkie was unwilling to do.
There is still no guarantee Merrett gets done and he will find it alot more awkward day one of preseason then Wilkie will. Not to mention by doing things quietly Wilkie got a pay increase and likely still in line for captaincy where as Merrett will lose his captaincy and the bonuses that come with it.

Why?

Lobb destroyed Cameron last year when we had proper structure

Cameron’s a good match up for Lobb, as most leading forwards are. The marking forwards aren’t.

It’s not that Lobb can’t do it to an alright level, it’s that you lose a lot by not having him roam more

If we are confident in getting Butters as a FA next year then it actually makes sense for us to move on out 2026 1st. It effectively lessens the chance that Port match our bid to force a trade as we won't have a whole lot to send back above what they'd get as FA compo.

If that is the case id do something like
2026 1st amd 3rd for Butts and 2026 2nd

Was just thinking is there a possible scenario this year that sees us trade out of the first round if Butters remains off the table and we can’t land a KPD?

There's next to no chance that Port don't force a trade next year regardless of what we hold. Butters is worth more than whatever first round pick they'd get through FA compo. That's also on the assumption he actually comes to us, which would be unprecedented for a player of his quality.

As someone who knows this draft way more than me, would you be comfortable trading out from our position for someone of Butt’s calibre?
Absolutely not. Farrow or Dovaston will be there at our first, both would likely play round one next year and both fill an area of need.

We can't really afford to trade our first out now and there is no benefit in doing so a year ahead. We don't know where it'll land and where our academy kids will rise to. Most importantly as others have said Butters will be a restricted free agent next year and unless Port absolutely implode they will match any bid forcing a trade.

Very strange that a decent key defender from a club with no real shot at a flag can look at a team with a superstar midfield and a forwardline with arguably the best young KPF in Darcy and 60 goal KPF in Naughton and not demand a trade, realising that their inclusion to our backline could be the key to unlocking a top 4 berth/shot at a flag.

Not just talking about Wilkie, but the likes of Weitering, Butts (competition for a spot in the 22), Vlastuin, etc etc.

Surely a decent contracted key defender from a bottom 10 side can be shaken out of a team.

Small forward Small Defender Half Back are just as big a weakness as Full Back and those 2 can fill 2 of those voids

Butts is the only one not either VC or leadership group

Personally if we miss out on Butts and can't attract another Key Defender who is B grade or higher I'd turn attention elsewhere.
We all know we have more holes on the list then just key defender as much as the media try to convince everyone otherwise.
Bringing in a better two way mid and or a better presser small forward or two will help our defence just as much as a key defender will in my opinion. We cant have the ball shooting out of our forwardline as fast as it did this year.

Not all players are shit blokes like Bailey Smith and Josh Dunkley. Some are in it for the love of their club and teammates over individual success and acknowledgment.
