Horrific selection in hindsight but I think I remember reading back through some 2008 phantoms last year and many were talking Smiff up as a top 20 pick IIRC.

I bet a lot of it stemmed from his record breaking sprint time too.

Jesus, Sloane or Motlop would be ridiculously handy right now. Though wouldn't be surprised if Motlop was also delisted by now given our poor track record with players with commitment/consistency issues

Matt Burgan (who was very good with his phantoms) had Smith at 15. I expect there was a good feeling on the board when he slid to us.

Burgan says: The Lions have been strongly aligned with Redden and it is understood Adelaide, Melbourne and Fremantle are also interested. He could slot in at No.41, No.57 or No.69 for the Lions. Redden tested very well at the recent South Australian state-based screening, which has pushed his cause. Glen Dawson, Todd Banfield, Hall and Mitchell Banner are also likely to come under consideration.

Imagine picking up NN, shuey and sloane in the same draft. Our midfield will be so much better and shuey probably would have ended up being a better player due to less pressure from opposition. But then again it might not mean a premiership. Adelaide had jacobs, dangerfield and sloane in the midfield for years.

ahaha. But their forward line collectively has been as good as ours ( definitely better than ours this year) for a few years. I lived in for a while and saw a bit of the crows and their one side i always thought that underachieved with their list.

Certainly think he has a lot more upside than his brother matt in saying that matt is priddis reincarnate in my mind for later in his career if he develops well. The worse scenario is brock mclean reincarnate.

There's certain players out there who are young enough with enough talent out there that the pieces can hopefully all be put together to hopefully give us the midfield power we need.

Who are the potential targets at this stage?
Aaron Hall - Just been dumped by rocket and would make an amazing wing pairing with gaff.
Brad Crouch - Tough, hard inside midfielder with the ability to break out into space at his best. Dodgy injury history, hasn't strung his best together and suspect disposal by foot when under pressure.
David Swallow - Talent is huge. Issues with knee are as worrying or worse than his upside. At this stage it's almost worth him deregistering from the afl, not playing footy for 2 years and getting direct steroid treatment into the knee.
Omeara - Top 5 in league talent. Knee issues and more importantly seems completely pussy whipped and on his way to melbourne.
Neale - Great inside player. A little on the small side and you would think it's either stay at the dockers or head east. Could a potential shot at success + big money + not needing to move anywhere be a motivation?
Prestia - Explosive in clearance situations but i must admit his disposal seems to be continually getting worse and worse and worse. His field kicking has gone from what i would say is average to downright poor. Also almost certainly headed to melbourne.

At this stage i don't see the point is just mentioning every guy who is a top line or close to top line mid from WA at other clubs as it's pointless.

Great list! I'd love Aaron Hall, I think he's just what we need. If we can nab Swallow too, gold! I find it hard to believe the Crows would let Crouch go, but he's also a plus talent. I think JOM is definitely bound for Melbourne (GF has Bec Judd delusions of fair weatherness). With Neale, we could use one of our KPD's in trades - Schoey or Brown would work, but if we can get Hall or Swallow we'd be right.

I remember Shuey's U/18 videos being pretty vanilla - funny how players can diverge once they hit the system.

I don't think i've seen a unanimously positive response like that (Smith) to a new draftee before. Maybe when Tom Lamb was picked.

Anyway, his brother reckons that the reason Smith slid so far in the draft is that he is a complete loose unit mentally.
He said that of the 500 odd players that Collingwood have psychologically tested over the last 10 years Smith has almost the lowest score of all of them.

Unfortunately they don't measure heart string muscles at the Combine otherwise he would have had a "red flag' against his name. .

just had another look at that draft. we could have legit picked ballentyne or zaharakis instead of swift, had motlop or sloane ahead of smith and had walters over jones. If we nailed our last three picks, we could be in premiership mode. we would have our biggest weakness fixed in the lack of quality inside mids and crumbing small forward.
