Whilst arguably it's a bit early given our ladder position, the reality is that other clubs have already started and no doubt the club will also have people looking at this year's draft which is an important one given GC17 is imminent.

Not sure where Jordy McM sits with the Saints fans - what if he came for say pick 40?

There is noise with Sandilands - whilst Macca and Blade are developing surely The Jolly Purple Giant has massive currency at any club?

Do we have any guys with currency that you'd trade?

Or more particularly, is there anyone who should not retain their position on the list?

If Max retires and we have two injuries down back, do we have enough cover?

Do we need to find that third forward tall (even though we've got away with it so far) or wait for Lynch to develop?

Fair to say our blokes will have their greatest currency come this draft period. Makes it interesting that we have guys like X Clarke on a promise which may mean we have to get rid of a bloke who hasn't had as many chances.

We don't need sandilands - already have 5 ruckmen 3 of which are developing (McEvoy, Stanley and McGrath)

tom lynch is developing nicely

and what we still need are more midfielders and quick aboriginal players

possibly more small forwards (to take over milne in a couple of years )

Don't like McMoustache, I don't see him demanding the footy and would honestly prefer someone like Rance despite him being a bit err clumsy since there's at least something to work with.

I'd still like a KP forward who could play that third tall since even if Lynch gets up and injury to Roo or Kosi and you struggle to find viable long term replacements.

And I'd add in a speedy midfielder, we've got the long kicks, what we need is the type who can just burst past, would be rather nice to have support for Joey on a consistent basis.

Another issue is that we'd be elevating Zac, and given Miles has been emergency a number of times you'd think he'd need to be elevated. Assume Simpkin too, as he's a huge talent. Gaertner will probably make it, although not sure another club would look to draft him.

Not sure where Harry, LJ, Howard and Leigh Fish will end up.

Miles is crap or get off the pot. His two years are up, I assume we'll elevate him. Based on Zac's performance this year, he'll probably go up too.

We're probably better off giving Simpkin and Gaertner another year on the rookie list

i just get the feeling that going after players of McMahons ilk is heading in the wrong direction. We've got some really good up-and-comers, so why not try a few more young TAC players. As SS said, whose spot is a McMahon-type gonna take? He would be 30-35 on our list, and surely behind guys like Lynch, Heyne, Miles etc.
Use a bit of nous and get a couple more good U/18's i reckon (even if they are picks 20, 40 & 60)

Not sure why we would want someone like Jordan McMahon, when we have so many good young players that can't get a game right now.

Also can't see why we would be interested in Sandilands either. No doubt he is a good ruckman but he wouldn't come cheap and I doubt we would have room in the salary cap for him. Besides we are pretty well right for ruck stocks at the moment, with Gardiner & King hopefully around for another year or two and guys like McEvoy and Stanley developing.

Not really sure if we have anyone to use as trade bait. I know there is a bit of interest in Maguire but I'd hate to see a loyal clubman like him traded. Not sure we'd get much for other older fringe players like Leigh Fisher or Xavier Clarke either.

Nuff said.

I'd assume a lot of clubs have their eye on David Armitage.

Can another club take Simpkin in the national draft, or can the Saints hold him back as a rookie? Otherwise seems a bit unfair if someone has developed but the club doesn't promote them onto the main list.

He's only in his first year on the rookie list. Players can be retained for up to two. Simpkin, Gaertner, McGrath and Tungatulum should all be locks for a second year. McGarry is probably 50/50, Howard is 75/25 in favour of being delisted.

Miles and Haretuku on the other hand, we have to make a call on. Pretty safe to say Genghis is gone, whereas Miles probably will get the nod. Dawson, although we can keep him one more year, is almost certain to be promoted.

Miles is delisted or elevated. No other options.

McGarry, Gaertner, Tunga, Simpkin, McGrath and Dawson can all be kept on the rookie list for another year. Dawson is obviously unlikely to be retained as a rookie and rather promoted to the main list. We can hang on to the others for another year though.

Howard and Haretku are probably gone. McEvoy and Stanley, hell even McGrath have probably gone past him. Howard is a HBF and we have a flipping long list of them.

Wait, did we rookie Howard in 08 or 07? And where's Mini at the moment? Is he technically still a rookie just playing cos we have two players on the LTI?

Would someone be able to alert me to Ryan O'keefe's current Contract situation? I'm aware he signed for Sydney in 2009, after a long time in limbo. I for one was very disappointed we didn't have a legitimate crack at him when he made it public that he had aspirations to return to Vic. The combination of our lack of quality lead-up forwards (the role Gwilt and the like have been performing this year) and the Lyon/Sydney connection had me salivating. From an outsiders point of view, O'keefe seems like a very good player coming into his prime. Perhaps there is more to him then meets the eye? After all, Ross would be in a far better position to make a judgement call, but can anyone else see the potential? This is probably one year too late, but I wonder if Ryan still has plans to return to Victoria...

I think Dawson will be too old to be a rookie next year, and he doesn't deserve to be either. He's looking like he could be a 10 year player for us.

Someone like O'Keefe would fit really well into our team - we don't have too many weak spots but lack some star quality in that role.

We do have some quality players who the board might look to trade. Maguire might want to look elsewhere, as might Ball if he feels like he's not wanted (and we should also consider he's on a massive salary).

Would hope we keep Armitage and he can push for a spot in the finals and for next year. If not, then a lot of teams will be interested.

Mini isn't on the rookie list any more, and we'll definitely stick with him. Has been a big improver this year.

He'll be 29 at the start of next season, and we'd probs have to give up a first round pick (at least) for him...I don't really see the need.

We recruited Lynch for that exact role, and he's killing it in the seconds. Just turned 19 and should play that role well for us for the next decade. Sure he might not get up to O'Keefe's standards, but I think ROK is a little too old and not worth what we would have to give up. If we could somehow engineer a Schneider and Dempster like deal, hells yeah. But I think the Swans value ROK a little more...

I thought Lynch was more of a tall forward, but I must admit I haven't seen him play.

Whatever happens, I trust that Ross will guide the team well and will make some good decisions. The recruitments of Ray and Dawson last year have worked out brilliantly so far.

My favourite part of the season. :)
O'Keefe signed on for 4 years im pretty sure. So I don't really think he wants to come home now.

For the sake of this thread, all players coming out of contract;

Luke Ball [Possible trade bait]
Max Hudghton
Matt Maguire
Raphael Clarke
Steven King
Ben McEvoy
Jack Steven
Eljay Connors [Possible Delist, admitantly harsh]
Stephen Milne
Robert Eddy

Michael Gardiner
James Gwilt
Xavier Clarke
Adam Schneider
Sean Dempster

Leigh Fisher
Andrew McQualter
Jarryn Geary
Clinton Jones

= Re-Sign
= Probable Retirement
= Delist
= Possible Trade Bait

Would anyone have a go at Ben Mckinley?

Leroy Jetta, Alwyn Davey which one catches your eye;)

Lovett or Dempsey then

Lovett would be very nice but he has done some great things this year so I doubt he'd be moved.

I don't think we can say much until the end of the season. Not because trade week starts shortly after, but because our performance in September will have a large bearing on what kind of players we'll be looking for (and fighting to retain).

In the meantime I'm sure Matthew Drain and John Peake are doing a lot of work behind the scenes.

I will say some of the names being bandied around in this thread are quite unrealistic. If we're not paying 100% of the salary cap at the moment, we sure as hell will be next year. It's going to be a difficult time trying to keep together a group of players who will be offered significantly more money to go elsewhere. The lure of team success is a big factor in keeping players for less than their market value, let's hope we achieve it. :thumbsu:

I doubt Gardi would go, in great form, AA form! If WCE offer the right deal then I would love McKinley, but I doubt we'd have room for him.

Alwyn looks like his aboriginal-ness has been coached out. He has lost that free-flowing, roll-the-dice 'n take em on attitude (Look at Rodan for example). Jetta is not up to it. Time to find our own next Nicky Winmar, not trade for another teams leftovers.
