Who would be our realistic free agent targets?

Armfield (utility), both Browns (KPDs), de Boer (inside mid), Mayne (fwd), Pearce (outside mid), Vickery (ruck/fwd)??

Would any of these players warrant a spot over the incumbents in our 2017 R1 team?
A sick and sorry bunch there.

There's not much to get excited by, is there?

I've flip-flopped a few times with Vickery, seen him play two great games live, but he's very inconsistent.

I don't know if I could handle Vickery and Westhoff in the same team.

O'Meara anyone? With Robbie Gray approaching 30, Jaeger would be the perfect player to recruit to keep this list going. Our 1st round draft pick should get the job done it would be more than what they got for Bennell last year. Ainsworth is the only option in the draft with Robbie Gray like attributes

in flight is awseome, but too risky for our fist rounder seeing as he never stays fit. While o do credit that to GCS shocking injury problems, is still a gamble

Every club would have contacted O'Meara with offers by now and I guess he's either going to an on the rise Vic club or back to WA.

Free agents list is yuck, someone might take a punt on Vickery, but can't see much movement from that list.

Hopefully our club has got a few irons in the fire for trade period both ins and outs. The White deal snuck up on us a bit and turned out a beauty.

Yea, everyone would love him. Except Gold Coast would probably want 2 first rounders and O'Meara wants 700K a year

LOL at the Westhoff out, Cloke in comment, and further take a good, hard, long look at yourself for even thinking it.

RE the Mitchell delist comment - if even half our list had the attitude that boy had, we would be winning premierships by now

I doubt we would get O'Meara out of the Gold Coast for a first round pick alone. Comparing Bennell, who the Gold Coast had already said sayonara to, with O'Meara is unrealistic. You would do better comparing him with Dixon who, on the face of his performance this year, cost us too much.

O'Meara also has to be under some sort of injury cloud has he has only recently resumed after 15 months out with a torn patella tendon. At one stage Rodney Eade expressed doubts about his playing future. If O'Meara wanted to move to us we would be stupid not to look at him but the price would need to be right and his medical report would need to be 100% sound.

Was just reading this article. A few names stood out to me; Sam Reid and Ryan Schoenmakers. Both can play forward and back and are out of contract. Would either of these two be decent pick ups to fill a 2nd/3rd tall forward role for us if Schulz and Butch don't get a contract for next year? Pretty sure they are both premiership players and still only 24-5 yrs old. They wouldn't be the answer completely but they could well be serviceable.

Other names of interest; Toby Nankervis (Ruck cover), Gary Rohan (Pace), Jake Barrett, Jack Steele, Caleb Marchbank, James Stewart (Bit of everything). Fringe players from the Sydney sides we could bring in for picks that would be attractive to those teams to help them get their academy players in.

Bigger name players who I'd be inquiring about: Brett Deledio, Aaron Hall, Dion Prestia, Tom Mitchell. Adding another gun mid along with fringe developing players above and a Reid type would help fill areas of issues on our list but can only be done if we make the tough decisions to trade out the likes of O'Shea, Lobbe, Carlile, Ah Chee, even an Amon or Broadbent.

Wouldn't be surprised if all of O'Shea, Lobbe, Carlile, Ah Chee, even an Amon or Broadbent are gone next year. personally i do like O'Shea we generally play better with him in the side then with him out of the side.

Sam Reid and Ryan Schoenmakers id be pretty keen on either of these two given Shultz age/uncertainty for the future and Howards ACL -Ryan Schoenmakers could be harder given Rougheads health, the hawks may not let him go. Toby Nankervis id be pretty keen on us getting him as it also makes Lobbe very tradable without risking no ruck in the event Ryder misses games next year. Do Sydney have any academy players coming through this year ? Bulk lower picks could potentially land us both of them

Giants duo Tomlinson 193 95gks, good versatility and plays either end and Haynes 192 90kgs forward who plays a lot in the middle would make good targets.

Tomlinson is basically Westhoff, with much less talent and would cost much more. James Stewart is more realistic and actually a better forward despite less of a profile. An interesting couple of weeks ahead for list management and trading purposes, right now you'd say we need a backup fwd but they're basically the worst trade you can do. If Butch can show that he deserves another contract as a fringe forward, him and the prospect of an early return of Dougal might make things a bit easier for us to get what we really need, a classy mid. Would be painful to go out and pay overs for mediocre forwards when we need a mid more.

Haynes is a defender
As i understand was originally a forward but GWS have turned him into a defender for similar reasons as Tomlinson has played a lot in defence. They've had Cameron and Patton from day one and the likes of Boyd, Mccarthy and now Lobb up forward so guys like Haynes and Tomlinson have been pushed to the other end of the ground.

No. He was always a flanker type forward or back but has settled into the back lines and is having an excellent year. Is untradable from gws viewpoint.

Not sure there is much value on the trade table atm. We have tried trading in players to make a Premiership list but so far it has not worked. Ryder, Dixon and Polec have yet to play together but when they do I would expect more than I have seen thus far. The trio cost us three first and two second round picks and to me that is big spending in terms of developing a list.

As I see things the only way we are going to get near a Premiership is for a big improvement from some of the inconsistent players we have atm. Younger players like Impey, Amon, Austin and Ah Chee need to take a step up but more experienced players such as Boak, Westhoff and Hartlett to name a few also need to give us more and do it more often.

We badly need a ball getting midfielder to go with Wines and Gray. We need Boak to get back to his best and we need to find a role for the enigmatic Harltlett who should never have been made Vice Captain. I think our best option is to take the best available midfielder in the Draft. If we trade it should be players for players.
