When Don Pyke left to coach Adelaide we brought in John Wardrop from Hawthorn who was well regarded within the AFL. I'd call that being proactive in smoothly replacing our coaching staff.

O'Meara and Mitchell didn't want to come to WA, not sure we can do much about that.

Hawthorn will get deals done for those two but it's going to take their 1st rounder for this year and next plus a quality player. Maybe more

Yeah, will be interesting to see how it unfolds, if the trades for JOM and Mitchell get done.

The Vickery deal has me scratching my head, I have to say, but you'd have to back their track record of getting something out of these recycled players. He may never prove to be a world beater but I'm sure they have plans for him that will make him more than useful in their game plan.

I can't imagine they'd have gone to the lengths they obviously have to get JOM without having a fair degree of certainty his knees are fixable/workable. But you never know. With Mitchell that's a pretty much no-brainer. So while they're likely out of the first couple of rounds of the draft for the next couple of years, they've set themselves up ok too in the midfield. They've lost a bit of outside run with Hill but have seriously bolstered their contested ball winning ability. Interestingly, something Clarko has apparently not put too much weight in.

If we have been we obviously need to get better at it. Really isn't working for us.

I've been in the ear of numerous hot blondes. Still haven't got a date with any of them.

Either I need to get better at it, or I never had a chance no matter how hard I tried.

Yeah, Collingwood doing some dubious shit this yeah.

I love it.

That's a a lot of coin to be paying for a guy that will struggle to play 50℅ of those games over the three years.

And Mayne on $500k. [emoji23] [emoji23]

Great summary below on what the Pies are up to from the AFL site trade radio.

We’ve all seen the smash hit “Saving Private Ryan”

Collingwood is now funding the sequel “Saving Captain Buckley” LOL!!

"DANIEL WELLS?

There's suggestions that Daniel Wells could announce his move to Collingwood as early as today.

The silky North midfielder is likely to depart Arden Street, and Geelong recruiting manager Stephen Wells confirmed before that it won't be to the Cats, so Collingwood it appears to be.

Nothing has been confirmed, but the move is fascinating. Wells is believed to be signing a three-year deal, but he will be 32 next year and injury-prone. Does he have three years left in him?

It smacks of a move designed to help the Pies finally make the finals - the minimum requirement for coach Nathan Buckley to keep his job.

The same for Chris Mayne, also reported to be heading to the Holden Centre. His best footy was two to three years ago, not in 2016. How does he help the Pies build their next premiership team?

The touted move we like is Will Hoskin-Elliott. He can be a bit hot-and-cold but his best is very good and unlike Wells and Mayne, he will be there for the long-term.

Hopefully we will hear more from the Magpies later today."

If we'd been in o'meara, swallow, lobbs ear since they left we might have a chance
Vozzo said when asked that we'd been in regular contact with Hogan's manager - it would be the same with all of those boys. Just because we don't hear about it or nothing comes of it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

People also forget that we were able to attract both Redden and Jetta last year

Not a bad article on the way the Bulldogs went about building their list. Doesn't go super in depth but does give some insight into what they looked for.

What was of interest to me was they looked at what players could do (not so much what they couldn't) but needed the player to be elite at something so players like Caleb Daniel with excellent vision and disposal was drafted despite his lack of size.
What I dislike about these plaudit articles on how good the Bulldogs built their team, is how fortunate they have been to be able to do so. The article mentions building the sides from 2010 onwards:

- In 2010 they made a PF and received one top 10 rated player and one top 15 rated player for picks 22 and 41 due to the F/S rules of the day, which further diluted the Gold Coast expansion draft for other clubs.
- In 2011 they were surprisingly average and picked Smith and Dickson, who are about value for where they were picked. Luck to the Dogs for their 3rd rounder panning out.
- In 2012 they were predictably shit again after losing Ward and cashed in the magical compo pick and snagged pick 6 to get Stringer AND McRae. Also snagged F/S Hunter with their 3rd round pick after North wanted him mid second round.
- In 2013 they were shit again and got pick 4 (Bontempelli) in a fairly strong draft.
- In 2014 1 of 5 of their picks between 26 and 46 panned out.

The Hawks capitalised (and still do) on being a free agent destination, the Dogs were assisted by some advantageous AFL draft rules... much like what happened when we secured Judd and Cousins. Whilst Gold Coast have likely screwed the pooch, GWS look to be the next team to have benefitted from the AFL's unequal recruitment rules (which Freo fans should be ropeable about).

Premierships are often built on the luck of having the rules work for you at the right time.

definitely taking all the above into consideration.
we used to be an innovative club who really pioneered and exploited the draft system when other clubs wont,
its extremely frustrating as a club where we have all the money and resources and simply isnt at the forefront of anything anymore.

all this could well be going on behind the scenes like you said, but we've never seen any inclination for years that we are being ruthless in any sense.

Saving Captain Buckley. I like it.

Wells on $600k is not unreasonable in itself, but seriously, does anyone think the Pies are going to be challenging for a Premiership next year? I certainly don't. That's the only scenario in which an oft fragile 31 year old, admittedly very good player, should be considered. And for two years with a 3rd year option? Please.

Mayne though. :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Exactly. We went hard at the trade table last year and used our 1st pick.

Trading away first round picks two years in a row is unlikely unless something very special is on offer.

We will pick a a de-listed older ruck and possibly Ballantyne for pick 55 after academy shuffles and compo picks are awarded. Apart from the obvious problem with Ballantyne if we brought him in it would likely mean Partington or Karpany won't get opportunities.

Can we please just trade Masten for a pick that lands us SPP in the second round and then everyone will be happy.

We were the first club to package up two picks to move up in the draft, when pick-only trades were first allowed.

We were one of the first clubs to trade a pick we weren't intending to use for one of the compo picks that could be used any time in the next five years.

We traded down in the first round to get a second round pick, when we'd identified a player (Sheed) we wanted who was likely to be available at the later pick.

There's been plenty of innovation, maybe just not the sort of moves you'd personally like.

cant just stop now though FiveStrings
im not a supporter who wants those big name signings just to make me feel better during the offseason.

but as a massive organisation in a bad geographic spot we need to keep doing more.

So after all the Petrie and Ballantyne hysterics we look very unlikely to get either. Ballantyne basically confirmed as staying at Freo and Petrie likely to be absolute last resort. Maybe our guys do have some clue as to what they're doing?
