Best Case

Somehow we get an elite small forward.

So what's Jason Porplyzia then, if not an elite small forward?! :P

I think the worst case is losing Tippett. But I really doubt that will happen. I'm incredibly confident he's going to stay.

We will pay for keeping on ALL of our oldies. At least 1 of Macca, Tyson, Goody, needs to go.

our main area of weakness is a lack of elite midfielders. thompson has been borderline elite for a number of years, vince has shown he will be very good, perhaps elite and danger could be anything over coming years. however IF we had a chance to get griffen you would give up alot to get him. im thinking mc kernan (who bullies were apparently looking at drafting last year with their next pick) and pick 13. or else, trade for another first round pick and give the bullies two first rounders for him if need be.

a midfield of thompson, vince, danger, griffen and friends (mc kay etc) would be top 3 in the competition within a couple of years. add that to a developing dominant forward line assuming we keep tippett and an ever dependable backline with the best kpp duo in the league.

get griffen, keep tippett and we would start the 2011 season as flag favourite.

that's over the odds for both - if i was brisbane i'd seriously consider it but probably reject just on the grounds that leuenberger fits needs better while, if i was essendon i'd be jumping all over that offer - dropping 3 spots and swapping someone who really hasnt shown much (regardless of 'potential) and who plays in a position that they've cover for v a 100 game player with generally good disposal esp by foot
Would love the Lewy trade, I know the Reilly one may be over the odds, but there ya go.

Unfortunately that draft was last year. Make no mistake, this draft is compromised, the pool of talent is two thirds the size it was last year with the AFL upping the age limit by 4 months. I wouldn't be expecting Rendell to weave the magic he has weaved in the past two drafts.

Oh and Porps isn't really a crumbing forward, he more of a small marking forward, such is his ability to take a grab.

is that so they then lower the age back to normal again next year so there is a larger pool of talent for the gold coast to pillage?

Jackie, I'm not sure this makes much sense.

losing a player doesn't matter, the compensation does.

again, doesn't matter unless we get the player for less than they are worth.

Correct, when it comes to trading its all relative and the chances are we won't know whether we've "won" or "lost" a trade till 3-4 years later.

Understand in regards to the "compromised" draft but taking that into account the wealth of talent in our current first 30 in the squad, our problem is that next 3 years our salary cap is going to come under real pressure with current crop looking to cash in (do not blame them for that either).
So to pay a big name big dollars to come over could be questioned. It is a chance for coaches to earn there dollars and work with the blokes that we pick up and sort out the deficiencies. Hence the reason why we employ Alan Stewart and Peter Jonas who have these skills.

Certainly don't disagree with what you've said, I think we've done extremely well over the past 4-5 years in stockpiling some quality young talent, was just pointing out that we shouldn't be expecting players of the quality of Dangerfield or Davis with our first rounders, nor players of the quality of Tippett, Mackay, Otten, Cook, McKernan and Sloane with our 2nd and 3rd rounders.

Agree with the Porps analysis as well, but with his sublime skills in the air and on the ground, i think we have a player that could redefine the position and expectations on the players that play it. We have enough players for the centre (not to say that he could not go in there and break the game open). Good position to be in :thumbsu:

Certainly don't think finding a small forward, specialist crumber is critical to our success, however I think we could do with one or two super quick line breakers in our side. A couple of players who, if we get tied down like we did in the 3rd quarter against the Pies, can run at and around the opposition and then kick long to Porplyzia/Tippett in an open F50, instead of us having to go into this defensive chip-chip kind of mode. Watch the way Robin Nahas and Tambling(Cousins maybe too) I think it was, cut through our zone like a knife in butter during the Richmond match this year. I I think players such as Cook and Petrenko could potentially fill this void, however I wouldn't mind seeing as look at a couple of other players around the league, such as Leroy Jetta, who wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, but are still young and certainly have some talent, just not getting the opportunities at their current clubs.

There is no doubt we still have some work to do. However, I look at that St. Kilda team and I ask myself if players like Dawson, Clarke, Dempster and Blake would get a game in our team and I keep coming back with a convincing NO!

What we need is continual improvment from our youngsters, and our mid to veteran players to keep performing a the standard that they already are and we will be around the mark.

Geelong are freaky in a sense that they are very even side across the 22 but their last 2-3 players are probably made to be better than they are because of the rest of the team around them.

I think as things stand now, our bottom 6 in the best 22 is better than St. Kilda's bottom 6 in their best 22. However, their top 6 is better than our top 6. However, the pleasing thing from our perspective is that we have youngster with potential to be just as good if not better than St. Kilda's top 6.

There is a big scope for improvment in our best 22. Not sure their is anywhere near as much in St.Kilda's best 22 or Geelong's for that matter.

Good post.

Watching that match on the weekend, I really don't think we're too far off being able to match it with these sides. Especially considering our scope for improvment from our wealth of players below the age of 23.

When it all boils down to it, our team is a lot younger than that which Geelong & St Kilda put out on the paddock on the weekend. Our players are very good at applying defensive pressure, but against these two teams in particular they get out muscled and out bodied, because their opponents are bigger and stronger than they are.

Yeah, had a look at the lift out they had in the Advertiser on Sunday. Two players playing in the GF were under 23 years of age, Selwood and Hawkins. St Kilda had no one under 23. Where as if we look at our side that faced the Pies in the SF, we had 6 players under 23 (Otten, Danger, Tippett, Knights(just), Mackay and Sellar).

our main area of weakness is a lack of elite midfielders. thompson has been borderline elite for a number of years, vince has shown he will be very good, perhaps elite and danger could be anything over coming years. however IF we had a chance to get griffen you would give up alot to get him. im thinking mc kernan (who bullies were apparently looking at drafting last year with their next pick) and pick 13. or else, trade for another first round pick and give the bullies two first rounders for him if need be.

From what I hear, McKernan is a keeper, will be a gun ruckman for years to come. I know you've got to give something to get, but McKernan is not one we should be giving.

You'd have to ask Vader for the reasons, I don't believe they plan on lowering it back down any time soon, anyway, all the quality from that 4months will already be on the GC list as they have exclusive access to 12 of those players.

The shift was not caused by the GC entry, though the timing is fortuitous. It has more to do with the AFL's desire to prevent kids being drafted before they finish school - to prevent the situation we faced with Dangermouse in 2008.

The change in age criteria is a one-off. The effect of which is that we get a 1/3 reduction in the 2009 draft class. 2010 and beyond will have the usual 12 month complement of players upon which to draw.

I don't want to see Knights depart either, but I would understand his reasons if he did choose to go down that path (assuming the rumour I heard is true - which it may or may not be).

The Advertiser are reporting that Griffin is NOT looking for a trade this year - and the article includes a quote from his manager (Colin Young) who is the worst in the AFL for talking up trade options in the desire to get a better salary. If Young says he's not going anywhere, then we can rest assured that he's not.
Yes Vader correct facts there but just felt that not a strong point of any of our senior players is body or defensive pressure but our kids will get stronger . Four out of 22 is a fair percentage though.
I dont believe Griffins agent and he will be on the trade agenda whether it happens time will tell. Believe to the right club might get decent trade out of him. Agree got the best we can out of Douglas and Reilly and add something extra we need with a trade
If we were to lose Knights in next 2 years I believe would have greater impact than a lot of posters believe as he was a major major reason our forward structure suddenly become rated so highly and really opens up our forward line and to lose him and then Tippett would have has back with the battlers.

LOL the scary thing is I think your serious....

well i was under the the impression that he would like to leave. i know he signed on but after speaking with essendon and collingwood i thort he wanted to go. we neva use jetta and you could use a little guy who provides forward pressure with alot of speed. cause taylor is alot better i put forward the 2nd rounder because he is not worth a 1st rounder.

Just so we're clear, Taylor Walker is not leaving the Crows for anything short of Adam Cooney, Bryce Gibbs or Lance Franklin. K?

well collingwood scouts have been watching him all year and an essendon scout watched his last few sanfl game games. collingwood have been speaking to him throughout the year and essendon after his most recent game. it was reported in either the age or the sun i cant remember which 1. using quotes from both collingwood and essendon officials.

I'm not surprised they like him. I'm sure our scouts like Gary Ablett too, but he's not going anywhere either. Obviously I'm exaggerating, but just because a scout mentions they like the look of a player, doesn't mean that player wants to leave the club he's with.

I would put money on Walker not going anywhere, at least certainly not this year.
He supported the crows as a kid, how many players get the chance to do that? (who are not recruited under the father/son rule)

what about jetta and a 2nd rounder for taylor walker?
come on, you need a forward badly with Lloyd and Lucas leaving, and Gumbleton likely to be injured (you know, because he's Gumbleton)

so maybe you can offer a bit more to confirm it

maybe your first round pick and Davey.

Utter lies.

There's no way Collingwood and Essendon officials would admit in print to breaking AFL rules by speaking to a player under contract.

Was about to say the exact same thing

Shock horror! 2 clubs have been watching one of the most talented 19 year old KPP's in the league!

They must have come to the conclusion that because we weren't playing him for 22 games this year, he must want to leave, and is not a required player.

He'll play 22 games for the AFC next year and kick 50
