How about Matthew Bate??
Age 25 Height192m Weight92 kg
Big-bodied, versatile, long-kicking left-footer will surely still attract suitors keen for strength and experience in the midfield and forward line.
Could he become a big-bodied tagger in the Cameron Ling mould?
Bate is versatile and can be utilized across half-forward, or in the midfield has been commended for his fine marking, booming kicks and endurance.

Seriously !!!!!!!

Melbourne delisted him & you'd think a Top 4 team like Hawthorn would consider someone like him !?

With all the names getting thrown about and 65 pages of this thread the name Brendan Fevola hasnt come up nearly enough. So i nominate him as someone we look at...................................................................................................................................

so we know who not to draft.

So are we picking up Matt Campbell with our first pick or waiting until our second?
If the last page is anything to go by we'll be picking up Cambell with our first, Bate with our second and speculate with Fev on the third.

Nice!

We have a lot of unproven players being counted as depth!!!
You can always work with a versatile player with 102 games experience under his belt!
I personally believe our depth will look much stronger with the versatility and attributes of Bate.
He can play in any position if need be, rebounding role across half-back, midfield and forward!!
PS A much better replacement of Cameron Bruce, much younger and cheaper in the rookie draft!!!

As all these players mentioned are able to be listed as free agents and haven't been it would suggest that Hawthorn are looking at new blood for their 3 draft picks.

We seem to know what we want and work out a deal in advance
1st day of trade period bring in Lake
1st day of delisted free agents bring in Simpkin.

Bate might be an OK rookie, from memory he was Hawthorn fan as a kid - but where would that leave Osborne?

Clint Bartram would be a better bet.

And he doesn't have red hair!

We probably have to draw the line on mid 20s players, and focus on 18 year olds again for a while. We have recruited two of them specifically for depth so far, (not to mention a 31 year old best 22) which I think is enough.

If we keep picking up 25 year olds for depth, we could be a basket case like Melbourne in about 4 or 5 years, with a big gulf in the area of early 20s players with 80-100 games under their belt.

While it's important we think of our 'window', we can't totally abandon the years following that

Interesting that Gysberts has been delisted.......thought we may have benn interested in him, under our system/development, I think has the potential to become a quality inside player.

He was traded to North dipper.

On the contrary we desperately need experienced mature age players, that are ready to step up and play in AFL level if need be, as we've got plenty of untried, inexperienced young players!!!

Woodward, Hallahan,Wanganeen, Frank, Kilkenny, Anderson, Litherland, Duryea, Kelly, Bosely, Lowden,Grimley Hill..
International Rookies - Heatherley(NZ), Kilkenny(IRL), Tatupu(NZ)
NSW Scholarship - Langford
Now add the departures of Young,Gilham, Murphy, and delistings and retirements of Osborne, Bateman, Bruce, Boumann, McCauley, Pattison, and we are missing some serious game time experience on our list from our Depth department.

What's the use of a heap of experience that doesn't get a run? Apart from Young, and then to a lesser extent Murphy, the rest of those names added diddly to our squad this year.

Meanwhile, we have second or third year recruits, who are just coming into the age where they can be useful contributors, players who have done the yards at training and at Box Hill, but you'd rather us pick up Spud X, delisted from a far inferior team. When will these 20 year year olds ever step up, if there is a line of second rate twentysomething 'depth' players ahead of them?

Lake 31
Spangher 25
Simpkin 25

That's plenty.

If we need more soldiers, we'll call on the younger guys. That's what we recruited them for.

Agree, although I wouldn't be against us picking up one mature-age midfielder late in the draft like Andrews or someone similar for insurance.

We were very lucky for most of this year when it come to loosing players from long term injuries apart from loosing Guerra and Whitecross and the most crucial part of our final campaign which most probably cost us the GF!!
But could you imagine an injury repeat of 2009 to 2011??

I think whoever picks up Mr Bate has go themselves a bargain, we don't have the space on the list and I would much rather use our three picks on kids.

Just in case you didn't read my above post here you go before you start jumping to conclusions:

More an opinion than a conclusion. We won't pick Bate up, I think he was just unlucky to play in such a poor side and if given the chance to play with players of the standard of Mitchell, Hodge, Sewell and Lewis his game would improve. But we have three picks one of which will more than likely be Osbourne(though personally I think it would be better for the club to let him go), a midfielder and a young tall forward. Then in the Rookie draft we might only go in with one pick and that will probably be used on a ruckman...so there should only be three new names add to the team list and Matthew Bate is not is not one of them. Another time with our list looking different maybe a good argument could be made about picking him up but it just won't happen. Simpkin is the type of player you're thinking we should get and we already got him, we won't pick up both Simpkin and Bate.

He is bog average.
He got games when they needed someone after Robbo etc until they realised kicking it to a guy 10 times a game for 1 goal isn't going to win them many games.
Works hard, got every ounce out of his ability, but that's about it. Poor man's Monfries.

The only poor man's Monfries is Monfries himself.

Now put a dollar in the swear jar.

At 192cm, Master Bate could become another awesome HBF option for Clarko. As we all know, you can't have enough HBFs on your list. :p

Once we pick him up, we can shift through the Port Adelaide delistings once more for a potential forward pocket player who we could turn into a handy HBF. After all, you can't have enough HBFs on your list. Any other mega team lists we haven't scavenged through? Let's go back to the Essendon list... they got rid of a few beauties. From memory, St Kilda did something similar to this with resounding success in the 80s.
