By a strange coincidence, I just happened to find myself down at West Lakes at 9 am this morning. An even greater coincidence was that was exactly the same time that Crows training started today. :)

There were quite a few not taking part in full training. Carey and Roo were training inside, although Roo came out for some running work at one stage. Parker and Krueger weren’t there at all and I have no idea why not. Disappointing as they both have been among the stand-outs at training.

Further to that there were another 8 players in the injury group. Hart and Smart have returned from the world of extra-terrestrial beings and abandoned their moon boots, and were joined away from the main group by Riley, Clarke, Stenglein, Torney, Ladhams and Bassett. None of these players looked particularly injured, but their oval work was confined to no more than some handball exercises, and some very short kicking. No running though, apart from Hart and Smart who finished with some slow running after about 30 minutes or so. The regular track watchers were surprised as well because all but Hart, Smart and Torney had trained with the main group the day before. Hopefully it’s nothing more than resting a few twinges.

Only 30 players were left to take part in the main group’s training, which started with warm-ups followed by running agility exercises. The main thrust of the whole session was the delivery of the ball into the forward lines. Once again they broke up into two groups, rotating in turns as backmen and forwards. The backmen would work it out into free space, generally by criss-crossing and then switching sides of the oval, before bringing it back through the centre. The mid-fielders’ job was then to raise the eyes and select the best forward option, whether that be the loose man or one who had got away from his man. This exercise lasted well over an hour.

The stand-outs were Perrie, Begley, Watts, Biglands and Macca. Others to really catch the eye were Schuback, Bode, Jericho, Mark Stevens, Scott Stevens and Bock.

A few observations:

Watts. What a draft pick this kid will be!! Our future long term CHF and looked really good when in this position today. Can mark anything and took a real screamer on the back of Matthew Smith (I think Smith was the ladder). Needs a little attention from Jars to his kicking as he has a slight sideways tilt on the ball at the point of impact when kicking, which occasionally leads to error.

Perrie. I’m going to stick my neck out and say he will have even a better year than last year. Trained superbly and marked and kicked like a player who really believes in himself. His pre-season has been outstanding.

Begley. Another one who I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t have a good year. This is his first pre-season for some time and he is flying at the moment. Excellent today.

Jericho. Looking forward to seeing him in competitive work to see if he’s got it or not. Has an excellent physique, speed to burn and kicked beautifully today.

Scott Stevens. Definitely going to be a handy pick up. He’s stood out right through the pre-season. Unfortunately looks like he’s gone to the Tredrea school for shooting for goal, as he sprays them everywhere. We’ll be holding our breaths every time he’s kicking for goal!!

Mark Stevens. Looks to be enjoying training at the moment and moving well. Only trains 3 days a week on the track and the balance indoors on the bike and pool. Trained well again today.

Schuback. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get games this year – he’s had an excellent pre-season. Looking forward to seeing him in the early games.

Macca. Cruised around like a rolls Royce – just doing it easy. He’ll be back in the mid-field this year.

Bode. Trained really well, but Radar is right – the colour of his hair is sh*t-house. (Just threw that one in for the girls ;))

Biglands. The man mountain of muscle is superbly fit. Will take the # 1 ruckmen’s role this year.

Once again, there was no genuine competitive work, and while Ayresy can say what he likes, they are definitely on a different program this year, with the intensity being saved up for later.

I'll be doing that tomorrow morning! :D

Bodey had better be careful, with all that dye and bleach, he'll hardly have any hair by the time he's 30! :p

Great report macca23!

So Macca, where should Perrie play in our forward line, along with Carey & M Stevens? Will be interesting to see how Ayres structures it.

Could he be the missing pacy defender we need to free up Edwards in the midfield rotation when need be?

His poor kicking for goal is probably why we are looking to use him in defence rather than up forward. Would like to see us use him & Kenny in the hey defensive positions, with Kenny taking the bigger forward. Bassett can play good footy on a flank.

Must give him many consecutive games this year to reward him for his pre-season, as he is our future over the likes of Burns. Can never have enough pace in the side!

If we can have 3 of Macca, Roo, Goody & Birdman burning on any given day, we will not lose games!

Great To Hear about Watts and Scott Stevens also how is Stiffy doing?

Stiffy's been doing well and should be even better than last year as he will be much fitter. One of the reasons that he appeared to be a burst player last year was because of his aerobic fitness level.

He's been trying to build up that aerobic level over the summer as he would like to play in the mid-field in 2004. He's finding that it's harder to get to the required AFC level for a mid-fielder than he originally thought, and it'll probably take him a couple of years to fully get there.

My guess is that he'll mainly play HF flank again with occasional bursts as an on-baller.

If all 3 of Perrie, Carey and Stevens are available at any one time, I think we will be playing all 3.

Perrie seems to be doing his best work as a leading FF. If he does play there, which is where I think he will, I can see Carey and Stevo alternating between CHF and the forward pocket. it does give options though, doesn't it.

As for Jericho, he looks a million bucks. I just want to see him in a competitive situation first, remembering that he was only playing SANFL reserves last year.

Long term, his pace ,strength and agility are such that he could play any wing or flank type position, forward or back, if he proves to be good enough. He's an interesting one.

Good report again macca23.

Any word on Tyson Edwards?

Thanks Fergus.

Edwards is just quietly going about being Edwards - and as we all know, he's all quality.

All the really established players like Edwards, Goodwin, Burton and Macca are just going about it very professionally without trying to impress like some of those trying to make an impact on the selectors.

You gotta love those meetings at AAMI Stadium :p

The stand-outs were Perrie, Begley, Watts, Biglands and Macca. Others to really catch the eye were Schuback, Bode, Jericho, Mark Stevens, Scott Stevens and Bock.
I picked Begley as th eone to watch back in november. Good to see some of the youngsters are putting in the hard yards and are showing impressive signs

A few observations:

Watts. What a draft pick this kid will be!! Our future long term CHF and looked really good when in this position today. This kid will be a gun. You are right his kicking needs a bit of work but he is nowhere near as bad as Scott Stevens or Ian Perrie of yesteryears

Perrie. I’m going to stick my neck out and say he will have even a better year than last year. Trained superbly and marked and kicked like a player who really believes in himself. His pre-season has been outstanding.
Does he still make you nervous??????:p Got to admire his work ethic and courage. I really hope he keeps improving. Unfortunately, I don't see a great scope for improvement. Either way a very handy player. Do you think he would make our best side??????

Begley. Another one who I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t have a good year. This is his first pre-season for some time and he is flying at the moment. Excellent today.
I picked him as the one that will surprise the most of the "unexpected" group. If he can stay injury free he would be very handy.

Jericho. Looking forward to seeing him in competitive work to see if he’s got it or not. Has an excellent physique, speed to burn and kicked beautifully today.
Like you I am looking forward to seeing this kid play a few games just to see what he can do. I watched him in his only senior game for Westies in 2003 and he showed some good signs playing across HF. He has a huge leap and pace to burn. Athletically, he has it but does he have it as far as football ability is concerned????? Time will tell. If he comes good, he is the sort of player I see as being able to play on smalls and bigs. A bit like Smart and Hart. Has he bulked up macca23?????? Do you think his body is ready for AFL footy??????

Scott Stevens. Definitely going to be a handy pick up. He’s stood out right through the pre-season. Unfortunately looks like he’s gone to the Tredrea school for shooting for goal, as he sprays them everywhere. We’ll be holding our breaths every time he’s kicking for goal!!
Does he make you nervous when kicking for goal?????? I think he makes me nervous with his kicking.:( He could be the tall defender that we are after:D

Mark Stevens. Looks to be enjoying training at the moment and moving well. Only trains 3 days a week on the track and the balance indoors on the bike and pool. Trained well again today.
I really hope he has an injury free run. A very unerrated player who is vital for our teams success.

Schuback. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get games this year – he’s had an excellent pre-season. Looking forward to seeing him in the early games.
I think just about everyone on this board knows that I am a big Schuey fan. I think he will play quite a few games this year as a small crumbing forward. I hear he is running good times in 5 km runs and is likely to see some time in midfield. I would play him instead of Burns and play him every game (Form and injuries permitting of course:)).

Macca. Cruised around like a rolls Royce – just doing it easy. He’ll be back in the mid-field this year.
He must be played in the midfield. Thats where he plays his best footy and I think he must have a better year than in 2003 if we are to be successful.

Bode. Trained really well, but Radar is right – the colour of his hair is sh*t-house. (Just threw that one in for the girls ;))
With the retirement of Bickley, he really needs to step up. If he can play a whole year on the level that he started in 2003, then he will be in contention for AA selection. His first 5-6 games in 2003 were absolutely superb.

Biglands. The man mountain of muscle is superbly fit. Will take the # 1 ruckmen’s role this year.
We have been saying that Biglands will be our number 1 ruckman for 2-3 years now. Time to step up and be the number 1 ruckman. His tapwork is not as good as Clarke's but he provides a bit more in field play.

Once again, there was no genuine competitive work, and while Ayresy can say what he likes, they are definitely on a different program this year, with the intensity being saved up for later.
He was on 5AA last night and he said that pre-season has been desinged differently. We have made a few "refinements" to the game plan and we are likely to be more direct when going forward (about bloody time). Our training drills are a bit different and our weights program is very different to previous years. He also said the training has been more individualised than ever in his time at AFC.

I must say I like the modifications we have made to our pre-season training.

In time I certainly hope so. If he is anywhere near as good a footballer as he is an athlete, he will be a very good player. In time he could be a very important player for us.

His poor kicking for goal is probably why we are looking to use him in defence rather than up forward. Would like to see us use him & Kenny in the hey defensive positions, with Kenny taking the bigger forward. Bassett can play good footy on a flank.
I like that idea as well but I would still like him to put on another 6-10 kgs. I think both Scott Stevens and Ken McGregor can "interchange" between FB and CHB as the needs dictate.

Must give him many consecutive games this year to reward him for his pre-season, as he is our future over the likes of Burns. Can never have enough pace in the side!
I would like to play him and Reilly in every game if they are fit and have decent form. Time to really blood some youngsters.

Just to answer your questions young Stiffmeister:-

Perrie
Only because he's Perrie with a history, Stiffy. :) On what I've been watching so far this year you'd say "where did this bloke come from?" He's muscled his body, his running is outstanding, and his overhead marking and kicking has been faultless in all practice sessions. He definitely deserves to be in our best side.

Jericho.
Stiffy, you'd kill to have Jericho's body - he's really bulked up with excellent muscle definition. Physically he's perfect for AFL footy. We won't know whether he's ready yet though until we see him in a competitive situation.

Scott Stevens
Am I nervous when he's kicking for goal?? Hopefully Jars can do some work on his kicking or we'll all be cr*pping our pants if he's kicking for goal. :D

Great report Macca
Great to see 6-7 players considered not part of our best 22 really stepping up and giving themselves every chance.

Just some comments:
Scott Stevens is a a very smart and capable footballer, but pace is his achilles heel - don't know if he could hold FB Stiffy.

Given my suggestion of Bock as FB was not given universal approval, and given his good PS, which position is he best suited, and who will he displace (if anyone) from our best 22?

Begley is all class - just needed time in a new system and a good PS - fancy anyone suggesting he is a fill in player.

It strange me batting for Perrie ( given I was his harshest critic) but he has made marvellous improvements, and yet most had him outside our best 22 on a recent thread. He will continue to get better :)

Strange, with all the hype on Carey last year, Jericho was hardly discussed ( the forgotten man).
He potentially could be anything: height, pace, great mark
Just need to see if he can play at the top level - I havent seen enough of him.

Think our future looks good.

Really glad about his improvement. Has his field kicking improved or is it still dodgy?????? What about his recovery?????

Jericho.

I am really pinning my hopes up on his development. I am really worried about our lack of young players who can play on both smalls and bigs. As you say he is the perfect build, I just hope he is as good a footballer.

Scott Stevens

Thought so. :(

He might be a bit like Mark Stevens where he will start as a backman and eventually become a forward. Hopefully he gets to be as good as M. Stevo. :D

At this stage, even his field kicking has been faultless. The test comes of course under the pressure of match conditions. Recovery has been good.

And its not too good about that group of injured players. Lets hope its not bad, and I wasnt even their to jinx anyone!

Glad you got that off your chest.

Macca, did another look at Hentschell change your view from the last training report?

IMO Hentschel's training has been pretty ordinary to date. Whereas the ones that are pushing hard for a spot like Bock are right up there in all the training, he's nearer the rear. It's hard to compare his pre-season with others because he's been injured in both previous years. Perhaps he's always an ordinary looking track horse, because the club seems happy enough with him.

We'll find out a bit more as to his progress or otherwise in the pre-season games.

Talking about struggling at training, both Hudson and Dabrowski are still finding training at AFL level a really big step up from VFL and SANFL respectively. Dabrowski in particular looked really buggered yesterday.

I think thats it, this is the first time Trent has done a full pre season.

He should be doing the work well and bolting through it, like Reilly, Schuback and Bock.

Instead, this is the first time he has had to do it and its caught up with him.
