I'll put this up now for those interested. Btw, Johnson? Dead.. dead dead last. Over 2 mins behind Nick.
Johnson got some work to do then. That's a pretty poor time by AFL standards even ruckmen.

They were running in footy boots on grass, rather than wearing runners or on an athletics track… that’d slow you down a little.
Sorry this being late, I had a few things on yesterday. I also acquired a decent sunburn on my face that I felt like I was on fire, then there was the draft etc.
I put the blame of my sunburn from having to wait 3 hours for training to start.
Got there close to 9, then was told they wouldn't be training til around 12. Looks like they were doing Gym, lunch then training. Given they did the 2k, you'd imagine Lunch should have been post training haha.
Not too many seniors turned up, but the list included.
- Bianco
- Josh Daicos
- Noble
- Pendles
- Wilson
- Cameron
- Kreuger
- Macrae
- Draper
- Kelly
- Ruscoe
- Sidebottom
- Reef
- Murley
- McCreery
- Nick Daicos
- Harrison
- Howe
- Begg
- Johnson
- Dean
- Carmichael.
All 4 recruits. (Hill, McStay, Frampton, Mitchell)
Given that players were wearing different numbers -- Michell #3, Pendles #30, Carmichael #2, Nick #5, I'm not putting too much stock into the fact McStay was wearing #11.
No other recruit was wearing any numbers. Maybe tomorrow we'll get a better idea if he is wearing #11 again.
There was a warm up, then they did the time trial.
This is the top 10
People don't like me talking about Johnson and his poor fitness, at least running wise. But Nick finished as he passed to do another lap of the oval. Even last season Johnson looked lazy. But suppose some people are better at some things, and not for others.
But its only day 1, so won't tear into him too much.
A few boys seem to have put on some muscle over the off-season.
Draper
Harrison
even Murley looks a bit bigger.
I've heard Draper put on 6-8kg
7kgs for Harrison
McStay thinks this was a solid session, but it felt like a light session to me. Not sure what they've been teaching him at the Lions; but there is a big summer of pain coming, he'll ache for days like this.
Pre-season, week 1. Wednesday. November 30th.
lt was a morning session today, and a lovely day for it as well.
A few extra players in attendance, and some not, from Monday's session.
Players at training:
- Lippa
- Bianco
- Noble
- Wilson
- Adams
- Cameron
- Macrae
- Draper
- Kelly
- Ruscoe
- Reef
- Murley
- McCreery
- Ginnivan
- Nick D
- Harrison
- Howe
- Begg
- Johnson
- Dean
- Cox
- McStay
- Frampton
- Mitchell.
+ Mitchell, Lippa did a big session of running after the warm up. Mitchell having issues with his hip? We know Lippa is recovering from his shoulder. but it was pretty decent session by both.
Adams joined them later on, but Adams completed half the session of drills. Just not the match sim yet.
McCreery did a couple brief things with a trainer, but that was about it.
There was work focused on 1-1 contests, stoppages, a handball drill where it was a hot ball, you had to get it out of congestion.
Frasier was doing some ruck work with Begg and Cameron. Seems like Cox playing more forward, while chip hit the ruck around the ground

Aren't most footy TT ran on grass?
One would expect Toby Murray to at least train with us given the connections he has to the club.
I’d love us to target Crossley. I think he’d be the next coming of Mumford if he wants it enough. It’s slim pickings isn’t it? Crossley feels the best at VFL level, maybe Boyd in the SANFL although he seems a touch undersized and Free out of the WAFL. The issue is I’ve genuinely got no idea whether the latter two are remotely AFL relevant. Perhaps Broadbent if we’re looking at an overlooked player or Naismith if we’d like someone recently delisted.
The way it’s gone we’ll probably stick with what we have unless there’s a hidden basketballer up for grabs as a cat B option. I’d personally take a look at Ely Smith or Jacob Dawson and I’m sure someone will float Stack at some point![]()
He took 8 marks in 3 games, only 1 being contested. In the VFL he had several games where he went markless, and the most marks he’s ever taken in a VFL game is 2. He’s never taken a mark inside 50. He’s not a good mark.I am surprised to see the way that Begg is written off because he is a poor mark among other things. In his few games last year he took a few marks and got into position well for others.
He’s undersized for a ruck, a poor mark and has little forward craft. He’s well up against it at this point. With his leap and great ground level play I still have high hopes for him. The way they have started with him training as a straight ruck seems good to me, although the sidelining of Cox in this role is odd. It's very early days in training, so perhaps we can't see too much in it.
Begg is an interesting player - some very good athletic traits and he has got a good contested game and great hands. Seems to struggle to get to where the ball is and to influence the game. I'd like to see us develop him in a way similar to how the Cats developed Blicavs - wouldn't mind seeing him in a run with role in the VFL with a big bodied mid. See if he can learn a bit about getting to where the ball is.He took 8 marks in 3 games, only 1 being contested. The game v the AFL Academy wasn't it?
Is Crossley the ex-Sun that got on the bags?I’d love us to target Crossley. I think he’d be the next coming of Mumford if he wants it enough.
Blicavs is a elite athlete. Begg is averageBegg is an interesting player - some very good athletic traits and he has got a good contested game and great hands. Sums it up well. We would have overpaid if we picked Ryan at 19, but at 28 he was good value. At our first pick, according to everyone in the know allan was a no brainer to take. At our next pick at 28 hayes was gone, there was no chance we were taking keeler or Scully at pick 28. So we took Ryan, and then traded 30 for a future second which given our draft haul next year was needed.
By our next picks, both Keeler and Lemmey were gone. Now if Scully was worth taking, rich who supposedly had interest didn’t even take him with a pick in the 50’s? Why?
We had no opportunity to draft any of those talls unless we overpaid. And we didn’t thankfully
Big boy being an ass coach....The draft hey!
We lose a top ruckman and an up and coming mid size forward.
So what does Hine do He picks a midfielder who could be good in a few years. He picks another skinny half back flanker and another project player who may be okay. Oh yeah we miss pick 30 and on trade to Carlton for a second rounder next year okay.
This draft was a good chance to pick a few kp players .Granted we didn't have top 10 pick but still around our mark .
We could have taken Hayes ( KP BACKMAN) In fact Hayes was expecting us to pick him, keeler (kp forward/ruck) Scully ( KP FORWARD ) Will Verall ( Ruck) just to name a few.
Oh well ,hopefully we pick up an experienced Ruck as we have another spot available i believe. We need back up if Cox and Cameron get injured we no good Mcstay and Begg not good enough to carry first ruck duties.
If Naismith is fit get him as back up or i would even consider Big Boy Macavoy purely as backup and an idea of becoming an ass coach down the track.
In Hine we trust or mistrust ?
Crossley is a legit talent. It’s almost criminal that he was discarded from the system for an indiscretion that has been committed by hundreds of players before him. I hope he’s got the drive to try and get back and we offer him a shot. He could be the steal of this years SPP imo.yeah and got suspended under the ASADA rules. They then delisted him. Not too dissimilar to Murray, but Crossley at least has made a career out of himself with southport. Murray, I think is in country footy
He's still young enough to get back into the system. He always looked older than his years; even at 19, he had a mature body of a 25 year old.Crossley is a legit talent. This is how we always trade them before they reach their potential.I am surprised to see the way that Begg is written off because he is a poor mark among other things. Sam Murray's been playing under Darryn Cresswell at Wangaratta Rovers & will coach them himself next season.yeah and got suspended under the ASADA rules. They then delisted him. I'd say they are both elite - Blicavs: distance running, Begg: vertical jumpBlicavs is a elite athlete. Begg is average
