The extra size doens't mean much at this point - they all shed a few kgs during the pre-season.

But to compare - Reiwoldt is only 193cm and 96kg. He has ultra-elite endurance but it goes to show that Jack isn't that far off the size required to hold down a leading KP type position. Certainly big enough to play as a third tall

I watched Tommy Bell run around all day long with his magnificent physique .
Trouble was , Tommy never new where he was running .
Silvagni is a footballer , he's got the footy smarts you just can't teach and knows where and how to get the footy .
Plonk him anywhere in the forward line Steve Johnson style and he'll get the job done ...

I'm not concerned that he'll make it as a footballer since seeing him last season, it's just that when he was 190-191 I found it tough to imagine where he'd play in an AFL side.

I couldn't find a comparison (and hes nothing like Gunston).

The extra height and size is very promising though

Pretty sure Gunston was nothing like Gunston in his first year...if you get my meaning there.

Jack will develop his game and carve out a role for himself in the next few seasons. In 2020 people will be looking at draftees and saying "I wonder if he could play a Jack Silvagni type role".

Jack Silvagni is a good size and mobile. You would hope he becomes a similar player to Bontempelli. He's got a really good ability to read the game and knows how to lead plus he is elite with his hands which IMO is the most important yet overlooked skill. I saw some good clearance work in forward line stoppages last year, he's a good tackler and again those hands under pressure are good. His grandfather is on the ball in our team of the century, Sergio was a strong, big bodied centerman who could go forward and pluck a mark. If he can build a really good tank I can see him playing forward and on the ball. Silvagni is an ideal size and skillset for the modern game, it's just about improving his running ability and getting games into him. No need for him to be any taller, if anything that may limit what roles he can play but who's to tell.

Don't forget that you can lose almost a kilo in *ahem* waste product, depending on when you last went to the bathroom. Not to mention that you can sweat out several kilos of water weight (your body is over 70% water).

Now Pickett might have lost several kilos of puppy fat, but his skinfolds would be a better indication of that. Weight varies in a human throughout the day.

Always remember anything over two pounds must be lowered by hand

It's pretty clear these days that those 'traditional' ideal sizes for players in particular positions doesn't matter so much anymore.

Size used to be valued for key forwards since teams would just bomb it long on their heads...that's not how footy is played anymore.

RE: Jack, he leads hard enough, and has a mean sidestep. Uses body contact to accelerate away from the contest as well. Not worried about him at all up forward or in burst midfield rotations.

Yarp, typically a fluctuation of about 2 kgs, which is why anything more than a monthly weigh in tends to be overkill if you're trying to gauge progress.

Training Notes - Friday 16th

Went down this morning to see the boys train - were right into it when I got there around 9:30.

Draftees were mostly boxing, understandable as their workloads are being managed but would've been nice to see them out there. Maybe Sunday Bolts will release them...

The 2nd year and overs were in two groups - I caught the one whose exercise was purely based on closing space and team defence.

This was followed by some match sim.

Everyone looking really good - Gibbs, Phillips and young Bradley stood out (appears to be with the club full time this pre-season). Jake looks balanced and quick, moves with an air that suggests he belongs. If he has a better year, I expect us to pick him up in 2017.

Good to hear the 'reset' calls still audible ala last pre-season. Love that we're using the same, consistent messaging.

Players then broke into smaller groups, with my focus on those doing stoppage practice. Phillips was again very good, with Gibbs taking control when the ball was up for grabs. He's set for another huge year. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Murph moving very very well and has natural speed and agility - easy to forget this given he missed most of 2016. Also noticed a conversation where he appeared to be mentoring Bradley, could inspire Jake to have a better year no doubt - great mentor to have, that's for sure.

I know it's been said before, but Murph really is a quiet type. Leads by example but hardly a peep during match sim etc. Ed and Gibbsy on the other hand - plenty of voice.

Interesting to note that young Dave Cuningham was training/matched up on Gibbs in stoppage practice... a sign he's in our long-term midfield plans.

Met SOS Snr - awesome guy. Looked a little tired but was kind enough to have a chat. Happy with the kids we drafted but gave nothing away.

80% of players then moved into full match sim, starting from the midfield.

Charlie was playing in the guts and looked at home a few times, tallying a few clearances. Daisy was training as he plays - trying to be cute and makes poor decisions regularly. Is trying hard but the doubts are building in my mind about him - could be gone by 2018.

Again Phillips was excellent - took a lovely, clean contested mark on a wing at one point. Harry then took one over Andy in the goal square then slotted it home without fuss. Give this kid 5-10 games next year with low expectations, focus on him playing as much footy as possible and getting some meat onto those legs - then watch out.

I know Korcheck is 208cm but Harry looks taller - just a beast. Could understand completely if thylacine60 had a crush here based on his views on height.

Maybe it was just me, but Phillips and Gibbs kept standing out, at one point their combo from a stoppage looked perfect. In fact, I could see this as our ruck rover combo in R1.

Walker off to side watching with Lebois (done for day) and JP. Love he's taken them under wing. Andy still looking fit as ever.

Charlie then came and sat behind me while changing into runners. I asked if he was aiming to play in the middle. He said 'trying to' - one year of playing forward, rotating through the middle then its straight into the guts full time for him. Should we have gone cold on the Freo superstar, Curnow MkII could well leave us saying 'Fyfe who?' in a few years.

Other player notes
Palmer on bike and sidelines for most part, not in the match sim
JGM watching on not in full training
Cas looking fit as opposed to last year which is good to see, moving and running well
JP looks like a mini-tank but didn't get to see him running around. Was boxing with draftees mostly
Cripps was wandering around, looked like he wanted to get out there. Probably champing at the bit

To finish up, they did the normal running drills. First up was running blocks. Players ran 100 metres in small groups to receive a kick - Charlie led the mid sized guys, Cas and Harry led the big blokes. Simmo Cuningham and Doc even. Good to see Gibbs, Murph and Simmo running in a group - pushing each other.

Finished off with 800m round the oval. Ed understandable led all comers but followed very closely by Marchbank, Kedge then Simmo with poor Korchek at the rear. Speaking to a few support staffers, who mentioned MB was an excellent athlete. He pushed Ed all the way before Charlie came from nowhere to catch them. Everyone got a laugh seeing Ed then pull ahead once he saw him coming (sneaky competition between brothers).

Training Votes
5 - Gibbs
4 - Curnow
3 - Phillips
2 - Charlie
1 - Marchbank

See those coming Sunday then - hope y'all Victorians enjoyed.

Great sign that JPs injury is well on the mend and he's committed. So looking forward to seeing him play.

One of the things about 2017 I am most looking forward to is seeing Pickett and SPS play together. Could be an oppositions coach worst nightmare.

Not sure what I appreciated more... Your awesome report or the fact you said 'champing at the bit' instead of 'chomping' ...

Good to hear Marchbank doing well .
GWS rated him very highly , so much so , that he was a starter in the senior side virtually from the get go when available.
They really didn't want to lose him hence unlike some others , they put a price on his head .
If he stays sound through a mixture of good management , good luck and natural maturity , that price may well turn out a bargain .
