Why are people so caught up in the weight thing?

The 3kgs he lost most likely would of been fat, just because you lose weight doesn't mean you don't become stronger, infact losing fat would make his core strength a lot stronger.

3

Correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't muscle weigh three times the amount of fat?

That would mean he either has put on no muscle, or lost a lot of weight and put on only a little muscle

I doubt this means he is much stronger - obviously Damien thinks his speed and positioning skills - along with his strong hands and quick reflexes are more important than his upper body strength

sounds like they might be trying to groom him to be the next richo - isn't this exactly what richo did in his latter years, nearly won a brownlow and everyone wondered why we didn't do it 10 years sooner?

If this is the plan, to play JR further up the ground - why didn't we focus on recruiting another KPF - we are hardly spoilt for choices there. In saying that, lets see the results before we get judge the theory.

Barnz it's to do with the new interchange rules. Dimma said in the interview that all players are going to be able to cover the ground more and for much longer. While I was happy with the weight he'd put on too, it's not baffling as such. There is a pretty good reason for it. It's a changing game, the interchange rule will effect way more than people reckon I reckon.

Reminds me of the Wallace plan of turning everyone into runners. Intentionally slimmed down our KPP's to make them more "agile" and copped a lot for it and rightly so. Same excuse is being used now. Only just started to recover after hiring a full time weights coach but still get pushed around a lot by bigger teams.

Trying to turn Riewoldt into more of a runner is futile. He's a stay at home FF. All his best attributes which make him so good such as reading of the flight, contested marking and body work all suit this position.

Yeah, but in the interview Hardwick says there was a focus to get weight onto players, so although he singled out JR as one that he would like to get weight off, that it wasn't a generalisation of how he wants the playing group. With either 2 of TV, Benny and Post being the other talls in the forward line, they don't have the stamina yet to push up the ground and back, and well, we just can't have 3 of them loafing around the i50. I think as a stop gap for a year or 2, its OK for JR to push up the ground. He'll at least not be double teamed, and on the cut back, has a bit more freedom.
And going back to the great man Richo, i think it was Spud that got him to stick on a heap of weight, and sat him in the goal square, and look how far that got us.

By having Jack push up the ground we achieve a few things, firstly we become less predicatable. Towards the end of last season we became way too predictable, every game was the same, Jack sits in the square, the opposition floods back and blocks his space, to get a touch Jack either had to take mark of the week or he had to lead wide. With him moving further up the ground it will make it harder for the opposition to double/triple team him.

At the same time we'll also achieve a second goal and that is developing the games of other players. Guys like Griffiths and Vickery who are going to be played forward this year need to develop. With Jack down in the F50 I don't think they will get that many chances. Everyone wants to see Griffiths at CHF, quite frankly he just doesn't have the tank to play CHF for every quarter and every game of the season. He'll need a break and sitting him in the square where he can use his size, speed and kicking ability to advantage is well worth developing. Same goes for Vickery, yes he was drafted as a ruckman but with the new interchange rules having him develop the ability to play up forward will be beneficial in years to come.

By developing these 2 alongside Jack next year will give us flexibility and will enable us to become less predictable to the opposition and after the years we spent watching us be predictable with Richo in the F50 it will make a nice change to actually have some other options we can turn to if Jack is having a quiet day.

Couldnt have said it any better. Also didnt jack kick 6 against saints where he played a tad higher up the ground.

+ more goals from HF's / Mids

cheers,

Probably not the thread for it, but no point starting another.

The Goo was supposed to be trialled back and forward last year but from memory never ventured inside F50. I wonder if he will get a shot this year.

With McGuane adding some size I would expect him to get first go at FB, Astbury excelled at CHB and Moore prob the 3rd tall with potentially Thursty getting a crack somewhere at some stage.

The Goo leading out of FF would counter his poor decision making to an extent and give us a strong, fast, good to very good marking option. Also has great pressure when not in posession. It is a no brainer if you ask me?

Could he also be the Sub? Ruck, forward or back????

Did Astbury ever really play CHB though? From my memory he was more of a 3rd tall...no doubt he can play the position but I don't remember him taking the top 2 talls much??

FYI drove past Punt Rd this morning and saw the rehab group doing handball drills. There is my training update contribution to the thread. But if I am going to do it properly:

Foley handballed like he use to. With perfect class and amazing accuracy.

Jacksons Right hand 2m handball seems to have improved dramatically and I really think he could be employed in a more attacking role this year.

Tom Hislop...watch this space. This guy looked to be standing on his left and right leg better than I have ever seen before. Seems really fit and I would be suprised if he becomes and out and out goal kicker midfielder. Was standing well on both his left and right leg.

Just taking the piss a bit...I do appreciate training reports.

Didn't Hardwick just mean that Jack lost some weight that he accumulated towards the end of last season??

Hence, all Jack has done is got himself back down to the weight he was at the beginning/middle of the year?

i cant really see jack playing his entire career as a stay at home full foward to be honest he is way too smart a player to be plonked at full foward and just sit there. works fine when we are competative but wasted when we are not really in the game.

I really see jack more as a chf very similar player(position wise) to jonno brown, occasionaly ff but mostly chf that even wonders down to wing/hb to help out.

Vickery/griffiths and even post will play kpf at times this year & will make our foward structure unpredictable

Griggiths is the key to our foward structure , if he can settle & make FF his our foward line will have come a very long way.

Good sign from yesterday, once Bachar finished and came 2nd he had a 30 second break, went back and started running to the finish line with the guys that were still running.

Leadership.

So many Essendon fans are going to have egg on their face over this guy.

Out of the last three pages, this was the best thing to read. Awesome. When your busting your arse pre season, it's the little things like this that can go a long way.

Welcome Captain Optimism to the thread!!

Why? Didn't say anything negative, just the reality. Bachar has to prove himself like every other recruit. His action of rejoining the runners that hadn't finished is a big plus, but, it doesn't make him an automatic inclusion in the 22.

As said, so far so good.

We dont need a skinny Jack, we need a 95-98kg Jack that will sit in the goal square and dominate. Will never be beaten 1 on 1.

Hit the weights and the protein Jacky boy!

Yep because there are so many players in the league dominating who just stand in the goalsquare.

Let me replace goal square with forward 50 then. Either way, I'd prefer a heavier Jack.
