Hey guys. I popped down to training today which was held at Melbourne Storms home ground. Training was meant to start at 2pm, but the boys didn't get down there till 2:45pm which was rather annoying.
The boys started off with their usual pre-match warm up before starting any drills. From what i observed, 5 players were on the sidelines for most of the day. Schulz, Kingley and Patto were running laps all arvo whilst JON and Peterson were doing ball work. Before the start of the simulation match, Hyde, Cogs and one of the youngsters went to another oval and had a kick there.
The first drill was a handballing drill. A group of 5 players (2 wearing blue tops) would run and handball the pill to one another for about 50 meters. The last of the 5 would handball to Chocco and he would fist the ball in random directions. Then whoever got the ball (blue shirts or normal tops) would have to try and run back toward the starting point, evading their opponents. This drill was full contact so tackles and shepards were being laid when they could.
I missed the drill in between (had to put money in the meter!) but came back to a kicking drill where it was almost a keepings off.
Then was the match simulation. 2 teams, White VS Black tops (which look great!
). Didn't take note of the score, rather watched players closely. I didn't get to watch the whole game but here is what i observed.
Joel Bowden - Solid. Still the general in defence. Looks to have bulked up a bit.
Pat Bowden - Good off half back. Came off during first half looking a bit ginger. I think he copped a hit to the mouth but don't quote me on that. Was fine after a stint on the boundary.
Nathan Brown - Looking the goods. Running strongly and kicking precision seems to be back. His awareness was sensational today. Looked like a Rolls Royce out there today.
Mark Coughlan - As stated, only did half the session with the main group, but from what he did looked really good. Still built like a brick s**thouse and trained with his knee taped. His kicking was good today.
Brett Deledio - Took me a while to notice him today with his long hair and backwards cap. Still a ball magnet and his disposal was effecient today. Look for him to dominate this year.
Nathan Foley - Quick quick quick. Need i say any more. played in the guts and was great. Drifted forward and kicked a couple of nice goals too.
Darren Gaspar - Looks to coming along alright. Did some nice things in defence and i think he could really have a decent year with Polak assisting him down back.
Ray Hall - Still looks to be finding his spot. Got caught running out of defence a few times but did some nice things too. Needs to have a big year.
Cam Howat - Ran the house down. Disposal is awesome.
Daniel Jackson - I am expecting a bit from Jacko this year. Looks to have put on some decent size which was shown by the way he was shrugging off opponents. My guess is he'll play as a forward.
Kane Johnson - Consistant. Just keeps working and keeps delivering.
Trent Knobel - Vocal. Worked really hard today, chasing down tackles and taking a few nice grabs.
Luke McGuane - Played up forward and took a great floating mark. Apart from that didn't see to much of the lad.
Kelvin Moore - Trained the house down. Looked like a tank out there today and ran hard at every contest. In my opinion he was the best trainer today.
Chris Newman - Slowly coming back. A few nice long kicks into attack but nothing too outstanding which is understandable.
Kayne Pettifer - Really quiet. Couple of Wayne Campbell specials today (up and under kicks) but not really a big session from Petts.
Graham Polak - Will be a good addition to defence this season. Took on Richo for the game and did ok.
Andrew Raines - Ran off half back as usual and i only noticed 1 kick go to an opponent. Will be another key figure this season.
Matthew Richardson - Kicked a nice goal from about 45 out and presented well. Was flying for everything.
Jack Reiwoldt - I thought the kid looked a bit raw. Presented well and seems to have a great footy brain.
Richard Tambling - Dominated. A close second to Moore for best trainer today. Ate every contest that he was in and ran all arvo. I am expecting HUGE things from Tambo this season.
Will Thursfield - Looks to have packed on the size and did really well in defence. Will be a welcomed addition to our backline when he is ready to roll.
Greg Tivendale - Ran all day and collected the ball at will. Got caught up a few times but his kicking was spot on bar 1 or 2 kicks.
Shane Tuck - A few nice clearances and disposals. Didn't see too much of him though.
Matthew White - Ran in the guts and did pretty well. His decision making let him down once today. Should of had a ping at the goals but ran into trouble trying to baulk a player.
Overall the group looked to be in great shape and the session was at a relatively high intensity throughout.
If i have missed something and anyone wants to add to that, feel free to do so.
