Travis Boak

Thats all well and good but why can't we go after Boak without trading away pick 4? We have a heap of room in the cap and pick 1 in the PSD which provide us with 2 of the best bargaining tools around so why not use them to our advantage.

As you've said getting Boak will help improve the list but getting Boak and adding another top quality kid with pick 4 helps improve it even more. Now I ask you which would you prefer?
It's not a question of what I'd prefer. I'd prefer one of any number of guns walk into the PSD or force their clubs to trade them to us for below market value but it ain't gonna happen. You have to give value to get value. Your suggestions are laughable. The PSD threat would be doing well to get him for pick 4 alone. If you fancy your negotiating skills, try getting Boak and Gray for picks 4 & 28, but you might have to throw in Edwards or the pick 15 T67 reckons we'll get for McGuane.

Yea I agree (that's twice tonight RT). We have got Pick 1 so lets use it in a positive way..........or have we? What are GC's concessions with the PSD. I know they get the first 5 Rookie picks, but what about the PSD?

Unfortunately, Boak ain't going anywhere (according to 5aa today). He is extremely happy and settled with the Power. Pity!!!

If Boak decided he wanted out and to come to us, given we have pick 1 in the PSD why do we need to trade pick 4 away?

Especially when you consider the possibility of the other clubs snaring him:
- The Pies want him, well considering their first round pick looks to be somewhere in the 20's given they are likely to finish top 4 and they showed last year that they won't part with any of their kids when it comes to trading except for fringe players, odds are they'll enquire but wont get past first base.
- Carlton are interested, their first pick looks to be in the 15-20 range as you said you need to give value to get value so I doubt Port would be happy with a pick that low. So unless they are willing to offer up a quality player I doubt they'll be in the running.
- Essendon want him and given their pick should be somewhere around the 12-18 range I don't think thats enough. Again would have to part with a quality player to do the deal and I doubt they would.
- Hawks can't get him now that they have signed up Buddy Roughy and Mitchell and were already tight on cap space. Add to that all the Hawks players that were offered up last year refused to go so that pretty much counts them out.
- Melbourne are a possiblility as they will probably have a pick around the 8-14 range and have a player the Power were very keen on last year in Jamar, but given he knocked back a lucrative offer from them last year I can't see him leaving now that the Dees are starting to come good.
- Geelong would only be in the running if Ablett walks.
- Neither the Dogs or Roos were linked with him in the articles and of the 2 only the Roos would be in a position to go after him at this stage.

Thats the way I'm looking at it, most of the other Vic clubs either aren't in a position cap wise or won't/can't offer up anything good enough to do the deal that Port would want. So why not get in there with the bargaining tools that we have in our favour, show a little bit of ruthlessness and make a big play for the kid and see if we can get him to walk for next to nothing. Like I said above if he wants out and said I want to go to the Tigers, there isn't much the Power could do to stop us landing him for free. So that Port gets something from it we offer up Jackson & our second round pick, if they refuse the offer then we keep them, keep pick 4, sign Boak and continue on our merry way.

Now I know this is unlikely to happen but why not give it a crack and see what happens, why just roll over and say here you go Port, have another first round pick and we'll use pick 1 in the PSD on some kid or a less talented player. Sorry but thats not how you get ahead.

If we were to keep pick 4 and try and land him, I think we'd have to try and trade some players for a pick upgrade closer to what port would want for him. E.g Player+Second round pick to try and get another first round pick. Probably dont have anyone worth that upgrade but probably the only way to get it done I would think.

So throw Boak into the midfield and we win a flag. Jesus, it's that simple. We didn't I think of that.

Lol that is not what I said. Someone just brought up a player bonus payment system where he would get a bonus for AA and for a Norm Smith.

I agree ridiculous concept but I was merely talking about the hypothetical with IDAGF...

Essentially it is costing you 850k for a premiership yet you seem to think it is too much???

Stop talking delusion.

One player don't make a premiership.

I can see it now.

Boak kicks 6 goals on debut then does his knee next round.:(

I'd rather go through 5 years watching kids than throw the club away with quick fixes.

I guess the question is would you give pick 4 for Travis Boak who was pick 5 in 06. If we are targetting a mid at 4 then I would say yes. He is a gun and would slot into a midfield. It is not like we are trading away our future given he is 22.

Either way I don't think it will happen.

We are probably better off recruiting kids again and then in 2012 with free agency throw plenty of $$$ at a star player out of contract.

Read my above post Smasha.

That's more like it. :D

Bide our time for a few years ,get the kids stronger and then go for the jugular.

Build our scaffolding first before trying to lay the roof.

We just have to ignore the media for a while.

They can't see that our list is the youngest in the comp and the teams that are beating us have many preseasons behind them.

They are a bit thick. :p

We have to stand firm, bite the bullets thrown down by ferret and the goose.

The trade we should offer is Pick 4 and Edwards (SA boy) for Boak and Salopek.

That is fair and reasonable to both clubs.
That's not fair at all. Port would be mad to accept that.
They drafted Boak at 5 and have put three or years into his development and we hand over pick 4 and get a ready made gun mid?
And Salopek for Edwards?
If I was a Port fan, I'd be telling you to get ****ed.

You forgot to insert a 'sarcasm' smiley here.....

If you chuck in Dustin Martin and we chuck in Matt Westhoff, that sounds fair enough.

There is so little chance of this happening that it's not even worth your time discussing.

Hey gopower, the article I read about Boak and Gray not willing to sign a contract for now suggested it was due to some issue at the club, and tried to link it back to Burgoyne leaving. Any idea what this is about? Is it just regarding the financial plight of the club, or is there something else festering?

The fact that we will finish last and Boak would be uncontracted tips the scales in our favour of course. If everyone was contracted at the time, then you are right, it does favour us. But I am sure they would prefer this deal to him leaving via the PSD

Look, as someone said, if he wanted more money, we would be the ideal destination as the other clubs wouldn't match our offer, if we could only convince him to come to richmond it would be easy, Pick 24 + a fringe player or PSD, take it or leave it i reckon, seeing as port would be screwed either way if he wanted to come home that badly, but hey it would be good ;)

Nope. Why would we give up Steve Salopek, and why would we want Shane Edwards?

Half back flanker for half back flanker ;)

We would just be after a little upgrade as we are giving you Pick 4 for a player that was taken pick 5 ;)

And we would be holding all the cards finishing on the bottom and having the first PSD pick. This of course is IF (and it's a big IF) we can convince Boak that Richmond is a place he should come to.

Gopower - can you go back to your board now?

It's okay - we get your point - how about instead of ramming it down our skulls you stop while you still have (minimal) respect left?

Actually the Port board is one of the very few that you go on and talk frankly without incurring a red card like you do on others (ummm Carlton, Bulldogs to name two).
He's posted within the rules and guidelines. We should welcome honest debate here frrom the opposition, particularly when the thread was as a subtle as a sledgehammer. I'd hate for our board to turn into a mother's club like the Carlton one.

The only thing it's regarding is the fact that Boak's not an idiot and will want to drive up his price as much as possible by attracting interest from Victorian clubs and the GC. He's happy at Port Adelaide and has said as much recently. As for Gray, his manager initiated contract talks with Port Adelaide two days ago, so he's obviously not planning on going anywhere.

Protip: Don't believe anything the Victorian media writes about Port Adelaide, barring direct quotes from the Port Adelaide players/officials themselves.

So why did Burgoyne leave, by the way?
