ROUND ONE

1 – MELBOURNE – JACK WATTS

Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Tall forward, March 26, 1991, 195.8cm, 82.kg

This is the closes to a lock as you can get, despite the speculation of this pick being used to pick Naitanui i think Melbourne will stick to there guns. They will look at the Larke Medal (Carnival's Best Player) and his stellar Draft Camp results and assure themselves that this is the man to drag them from where they are now.

2 – WEST COAST – NICHOLAS NAITANUI
Swan Districts, WA, Ruckman, May 4, 1990, 200.9cm, 93.9kg

Nicholas "Nic Nat" Naitanui has been in the first sentance of every draft conversation this year with good reason. The big Fijian is as good in the air as he is on the ground which is a unique trait in a ruckmen that the Eagles will b salvating over him. With the combination of Cox and Naitanui the Eagles engine will only improve and become more domintant. Many think this boy is a major risk with his limited knowleadge of the game and questionable field kicking ability but if you watch the way he runs and chase down smaller quicker midfielders than himself then the Eagles can feel realived that he drops to 2.

3 – FREMANTLE – STEPHEN HILL
West Perth, WA, Small/medium midfielder, May 1, 1990, 183.7cm, 68.9kg

With the endurance and speed the wide expansion of Subiaco Hill will thrive in the conditions. The lean wingman has been tipped to go as low as early 2nd Round but his rapid rise had come to fruitation over the past couple of days catapulting him up the ranks. Although he is very much an outside player as shown by his time on the wing this year he does have the ability to go inside and win his own ball, his raking left foot is a major asset and is also good on his right.

4 – PORT ADELAIDE – HAMISH HARTLETT
West Adelaide, SA, Medium midfielder, August 14, 1990, 184.1cm, 76.6kg

Probably my favourite player from this draft and in my view i think could turn about to be a real superstar of the quality of Voss, Hird or Buckley like accolades, very big call- YES, set my self up to be made look like a fool- YES. Hamish has the amazing ability that very few at his age have and thats the ability to read the player better than any other is very much Hird esque, His sublime skills are a feature and overhead marking is a strength. He has a burst of pace that is decptively quick and will b a great fit to the Port midfield that is gathering some talent.

5 – ESSENDON – DANIEL RICH
Subiaco, WA, Medium midfielder, June 7, 1990, 183.7cm, 83.2kg

My gut feel is that Fremantle and Port arn't creating a smokescreen and that Hill and Hartlett will go there, Rich will be to good to pass up for the Bombers who are in need of some quality midfielders, although they will be looking to sure up there defence with the retirement of Michael and pending end to Fletchers stellar career meaning Hurley will be a good prospect at this pick. Rich is already accomplished more than most in this draft with two senior premierships to his name so early in his career the boy can play footy. While there are questions over his work-rate through the midfield he is a complete replica of Palmer what more needs to be said??

6 – CARLTON – MICHAEL HURLEY
Northern Knights, VIC, Tall defender, June 1, 1990, 192.5cm, 91.8kg

Hurley or Yarran- For me its going to be Hurley and while Carlton do need a Yarran in the forward line i think they are in more need of a key defender and will likely go with a forward with there second pick. Hurley is a very reliable back that can also can go forward but his strength is with his amzing defensive spoiling ability. Carlton could just recruit him on the basis to play on Franklin cause this could be a very good match-up.

7 – BRISBANE LIONS – JACK ZIEBELL
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium midfielder, February 28, 1991, 188.4cm, 86.3kg

Brisbane's new coach will liken to this fellow over others due to the fact he is very much a clone of his former self with similar attributes, his hardness is a strength...obviously but its his overheaded marking and ability to play taller than he is that is seen in such players like Bartel and Hodge. Also link with Pick 5 at the Bombers i think the will have more taltilising prospect at that pick.

8 – RICHMOND – TYRONE VICKERY
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Ruckman, May 31, 1990, 200cm, 88.8kg

The only way he won't go to Richmond i think is if he goes to Port at 4 which has become more unlikely in recent weeks, while still devolping liek most he has sure hands and great agility across the ground. His attack on ball has improved but he still needs to bulk up quite a bit to take on players suck as Cox, Sandilands and Hille but that will come with time.

9 – NORTH MELBOURNE – TOM SWIFT
Claremont, WA, Medium midfielder, July 6, 1990, 190.9cm, 84.5kg

While many clubs with picks in the low to high teens will be hoping this boy slides and slides i think it won't happen and while North could quite easily go with Sidebottom here i think Swift is there man. He has great height for a midfielder and had an ACL had not derailed his last couple of seasons this boy could have done anything. Consitent racking major possesion tallies of 40 plus he is a salvating option for many clubs but the injury concern is there and makes this pick a risky one with high reward. No guts no glory!

10 – ADELAIDE – JACKSON TRENGOVE
Calder Cannons, VIC, Tall forward, November 1, 1990, 196.5cm, 88.5kg

Another example of a player dropping due to injury, but he wont drop to far, long been link to the Crows at this pick has been touted as high as Top 5. His performances as an underager put his name up in lights. Playing on players such as Kruezer and Mc Evoy he more than held his own. His serious hamstring injury similar to Lloyd's dropped him down the pecking order a bit Crows will be more than happy to take him with this pick

11 – COLLINGWOOD – MITCH ROBINSON
Tassie Mariners, TAS, Medium midfielder, June 7 1989, 184.7cm, 79.1kg

Finds the footy consistently well and is a similar mould to young Scott Pendlebury, pies need to get some consitent ball winners in there midfield to replace Burns and O Bree. He is a beast on the ball and a great clerance player, his racking right foot can make him a real asset to the pies midfield.

12 – SYDNEY SWANS – NICK SUBAN
North Ballarat, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, May 9, 1990, 180.2cm, 83.2kg

Strong inside midfielder with great leadership qualities he fits the Sydney Swans bill perfectly, a great example of the depth of this draft a consitent ball winner with a big frame who can also play on nippy littl half forwards as a stopper. Alwasy puts his head over the ball, is heading to Harbour town.

13 – ST KILDA – CHRIS YARRAN
Swan Districts, WA, Medium forward, December 19, 1990, 180.3cm, 83.3kg

Its a big fall for such a talent but one that definantly might happen, he is great fir for the saints who have been looking for such a player to accompany Reiwoldt in the forward line. Great skills on both sides of his body and great evasive skills, not quite ready to move in to AFL midfield circles but could in the future.

14 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – AYCE CORDY
Geelong Falcons, VIC, Ruckman, August 6, 1990, 201.7cm, 77.6kg

One of the boys that will sleep well tonight knowing that tommorow he can head to the draft with a Bulldogsshirt on knowing that his name come pick twelve is certain to be read out. In many circles is viewed as a steal at pick 14 when he could go as high as 4. Great draft camp results doggies are laughing all the way to the bank.

15 – GEELONG – ASHLEY SMITH
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Medium defender, July 20, 1990, 185.5cm, 84.7kg

While as a bomber supporter i am hoping that Smith falls to our second pick but cant see it happening. This bloke is a major talent can read the ply brillantly from half back. Consistently hitting targets 50 metres plus away he is a steal even at this pick and Geelong will be quite happy with this pick and will hope he mit move into midfield.

16 – HAWTHRON – JORDAN LISLE
Oakleigh Chargers, VIC, Tall forward, July 12 1990, 195.1cm, 92.8kg

There's a possiblity he could slip quite a margin i cant see it happening with Hawthorn looking for tall defenders this boy isone of the best in the draft and while can play forward his prefered position is key defensive post.

17 – MELBOURNE – JAYDYN POST
Western Jets, VIC, Tall forward/defender, December 5, 1989, 194cm, 88.4kg

This will be used as a bookend pick in my view, using there first pick almost certainly on Watts a key forward they should look to sure up there defensive post as well after a major clear out of thre backline there are a few gaps to fill down there before they can climb up the ladder. Post had a whopping 35 possesions 18 marks in a TAC cup game last year in a game described as one of the "best ever" in the competiton, won the Jets B&F and has neat skills and great overhead mark.

18 – WEST COAST EAGLES – HAYDEN BALLANTYNE
Peel Thunder, WA, Small forward, July 16, 1987, 174cm, 77kg

Sandover meadallist is a major accolade to take into this draft and they dont get given out mithout merit, 75 goals as a small forward the nippy little forward didnt attend draft camp and maybe why he hasnt been given a look in as a first round pick.

I think Steele is definitely going to go first round. I think top 10 most likely.

Good draft. I tend to agree with you on Hill and Hartlett. THink these 2 are looking solid for those positions. ANd Essendon surely couldnt pass on Rich even though they have been linked with Yarran.

I agree that if Yarran is passed up by Essendon he could fall as low as St.Kilda.

Interesting choice for Collingwood. We keep getting linked to Sidebottom, Swift etc...but theres a chance all of these guys will be gone by our pick. We have said we will go best available...but god i hope that decision is a midfielder.
