triple J Hottest 100 of 2022

Remove this Banner Ad

Haven't listened to Triple J as much the last couple of years and just found it too hard to compile a list. But looking back at albums I've added this year, would be happy with songs from Meg Mac, Gordi, Ball Park Music, Arcade Fire (are they no longer Triple J cool?), Alex Cameron, Spacey Jane or Methyl Ethel getting a run. Will also be pleased if Gang of Youths finally land the number 1 they deserved last album and probably last year as well.
Did you not hear?

Generic is simply not a term that should be applied to GoY. The entire song is about the regret and anguish Dave felt during his father's funeral. With a catchy central tune and a bit of violin work to tie it all together. This is pretty far from the usual MMM soft rock fodder you might be thinking of
Gave it a listen. Even more of a The National rip off than normal. Generic is a pretty fair label.

oh yeah I’ll be adjusting the list multiple times, most likely will have Teenage Joan’s in the 80’s by the end of Jan

Strangely I don't even like The National anyway.

To each their own.

bloke seems like he probably enjoys the new Arctic Monkeys snoozefest

Because I, like the majority of music fans around the world, rate The National above Gang of Youths? Weird take.

(But no, I've not enjoyed the last two Alex Turner solo Arctic Monkeys albums.)

Didn't put much thought in it this year, and tried to stay clear of manually adding some beaut extended album tracks.

I was ready to include Promises (Touch Sensitive) until I remembered it was released about a week after the end-November eligibility cutoff.

I often find adding tracks manually is a chore anyway and they never have a chance of charting, last time I bothered was probably 2010 haha

they’ve even pre-warned us that the 101-200 isn’t going to be very acuurate due to the spread of votes this year, plenty in the 101-125 I can see sneaking into the countdown, and even one or two outside of that too

Yep. They also know they can't account for the TikTok factor that saw Tom Cardy came from outside the WT 200 last year.

I just noticed something crazy.
If King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's song The Dripping Tap manages to get into the top 100 it will become the longest song of all time to poll. Not only would it beat the record set by both Kanye West (Runaway) and Green Day (Jesus Of Suburbia) at 9:08 minutes long, it would literally double them + 1 second, coming in at a staggering 18:17 minutes long.

as crazy as it would be to see, I can’t see it making the 100, although a spot in the 101-200 is highly likely

thewitness how goes your count so far?

I ran my prediction model through the data last night (it still needs a fair bit of tidying up) and Dripping Tap came out somewhere between 101-110 (either 103 or 107 from memory).

wow that would be huge if it somehow snuck into the 100, 18 minutes though, gives people plenty of time to do a bottle-o run or whatever whilst its playing haha

be interesting to see your prediction model once its all finalised and compare, I've already made a ton of adjustments to my original list.

I do wonder if they’ll play the full thing if it makes the 100, or do some sneaky edits.

Flume's Say Nothing is such a lazy track. The repetitive phrases in the chorus just screams running out of ideas. Very uninspiring song.

Doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top 10 - he has truly been kissed on the **** that everyone got around this one.

there are certain artists that, no matter what they release, will always accumulate votes and when they're Aussie that is ten fold, Flume is one of those, he could literally release a 3 min track of him pushing out a s**t and it'd get voted for

Hilltop Hoods, Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale, Billie Eilish, Ocean Alley, Tones and I, there's a few of them

Yeah the Flume track is pretty meh, but I've heard worse. It's generic but I don't hate it. Or love it. I just sort of nothing it.

BOTA and Delilah on the other hand...two of the weakest, most repetitive and inane tracks I've heard in a long time. At no point does anything interesting or even slightly different happen from start to finish of these tracks. Someone just pushed a button to play a generic sample on repeat for 4 minutes and 'sang' (really just spoke) the same few lines repeatedly over the top.

Hilltop hoods to break record for most entries ever over multiple annual countdown years with 2 more tracks this year & Gorillaz most time between first entry (2001 I think) & current entry.

Songs uploaded to unearthed: 2 King Stingray, Anakin, Leaving for London, Terrible & Milk (or Why do I keep?)

Artists reach 15 songs over annual countdown years Flume, Lime Cordiale, Ball park, Eilish & possibly Artic monkeys

  40. STAR WALKIN’ - Lil Nas X
Got a bit too much time on my hands this week, so for reference I went and found my top 20 prediction from last year and saw how it stacked up against the real thing.

  1. Stay - The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber (Actual #2)
  2. good 4 u - Olivia Rodrigo (Actual #4)
  3. The Angel of 8th ave. - Gang of Youths (Actual #6)
  4. INDUSTRY BABY - Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow (Actual #7)
  5. On My Knees - RUFUS DU SOL (Actual #9)
  6. Elephant (Like a Version) - The Wiggles (Actual #1)
  7. Happier Than Ever - Billie Eilish (Actual #5)
  8. Lots of Nothing - Spacey Jane (Actual #3)
  9. Kiss Me More - Doja Cat and SZA (Actual #7)
  10. Alive - RUFUS DU SOL (Actual #19)
  11. MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) - Lil Nas X (Actual #10)
  12. Sunscreen - Ball Park Music (Actual #21)
  13. edamame - bbno$ and Rich Brian (Actual #24)
  14. drivers license - Olivia Rodrigo (Actual #13)
  15. Apple Crumble - Lime Cordiale and Idris Elba (Actual #14)
  16. Seventeen Going Under - Sam Fender (Actual #16 - hey look I actually got one)
  17. Love Signs - The Jungle Giants (Actual #18)
  18. Next To Me - RUFUS DU SOL (Actual #25)
  19. serotonin - girl in red (Actual #40)
  20. THATS WHAT I WANT - Lil Nas X (Actual #29)
The main things I took from this when I made the 40 above:

I underestimated Spacey Jane. Lots of Nothing came in at 3 and Lunchtime came in at 13 and wasn’t even in my 20.

Overestimated Gang of Youths and Ball Park Music. Hence me having them a fair bit lower than where you’ll see them on WT.

I was pretty high on Lil Nas X’s hopes last year, probably a tad too high, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Star Walkin’ is higher than where I’ve placed it, being the only song he’s got in the voting list.

Also just realised I should probably have Deepest Darkness by Ocean Alley in my 40 because Touch Back Down overperformed WT massively last year when it finished #20.
