triple J Hottest 100 of 2022

Yeah the Flume track is pretty meh, but I've heard worse. It's generic but I don't hate it. Or love it. I just sort of nothing it.

BOTA and Delilah on the other hand...two of the weakest, most repetitive and inane tracks I've heard in a long time. At no point does anything interesting or even slightly different happen from start to finish of these tracks. Someone just pushed a button to play a generic sample on repeat for 4 minutes and 'sang' (really just spoke) the same few lines repeatedly over the top.

BOTA I can atleast understand the appeal from the Inspired Unemployed vid they shot and the use on Tiktok but Fred Again… is the new Fisher and in 2 years nobody will care about his generic music

So after some discussion by us old fogies in previous years whether the Hottest 100 is getting worse compared to our glory days, I've been on a mission the last 18 months or so to listen to every Hottest 100 ever on Spotify, and keep track of how many songs I deemed 'like-worthy'.

The results:



Some notes:

- I had these playing during my gym time so I literally listened to every minute of every song. I wasn't just sitting down at the computer listening to the first 30 seconds then quickly moving on. Every song got a fair trial.

- Unsurprisingly, music happened to coincidentally peak with my teenage/early 20's years.

- But seriously, I'd be very interested in one of the teenage/early 20 somethings on here repeating this experiment and seeing their results from those early years before they were even born.

- It felt like there was much more variety and 'alternative' stuff in the earlier years. I wasn't keeping notes as I went but I remember feeling like somewhere in that mid 2000s to mid 2010s period it became a really dull homogenous repetition of soft ballad stuff plus Parkway Drive. Then it started to get a bit more varied again in the last 5 years or so.

Flume's Say Nothing is such a lazy track. The repetitive phrases in the chorus just screams running out of ideas. Very uninspiring song.

Doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top 10 - he has truly been kissed on the **** that everyone got around this one.

Oh yeah I agree. In terms of historical Flume catalogue it's not even top 10. But I think it is getting a tonne of votes because the majority of the Hottest 100 short-list is bland Aussie soft rock which cannibalises itself with each particular bands fans.

I can confirm that towards the end I was more or less just chucking songs in and wouldn’t be surprised if I’m massively out on some of them.

I've done similar in the past and tend to agree with your chart. The mid to late 2010's really struggled with a bit of improvement over the last few years from 2020 I think.

If it was actually on the voting list it probably would’ve been the favourite to take out the whole thing, but because it wasn’t I feel like it could appear at any moment or not at all.
