I still don't think Pets or Armstrong have long AFL careers ahead of them, but they're both still in the system for now at least.

Surely its time to acknowledge that Pets is here to stay. Since you posted about this he has played 38 out of a possible 47 games and firmly entrenched himself in our best 22.

Let's see what I wrote in that post"
Reilly - still on our list :thumbsu:
Rutten - still on our list :thumbsu:
Symes - not on our list, didn't attract any trade interest :thumbsu:
Maric - traded :thumbsu:
Petrenko - still on our list
Armstrong - not on our list (traded for chump change) :thumbsu:

I'll take a hit rate of 5/6 any day of the week. Let me know when you get above 20% with your long range predictions (or short range calls for that matter).

Just because they may not be popular. My predictions are right a whole lot more then you give me credit for.

No.. I give you credit when you get things right.. so rarely does that happen.

So far your inexplicable man love for McKernan and irrational hatred of Craig are tearing your average down.

Could i say the exact vice versa with you?
Get over yourself.

Under normal circumstances I would say "in two years time" we will be happily sitting in a pretty good premiership window. However, thanks to Trigg and the other incompetents in the front office, this is now seriously threatened. For once Chapman, Trigg and the club really need to follow through with their promise to be aggressive during this years trade period. Our premiership chance and list management depend on it.

Can't see trading helping too much. Whatever we were able to gain we would also have to lose in approximate equal portions. If we were to assume that our top 15 players were off limits, what would we have to lose to gain a pick around 12. Or if we gave up our rnd 3 pick, jaensch and Martin, what would we get?

Our only chance to improve our list in next draft is with free agency.

Jaensch Martin LT Otten and Douglas would all be on my trading block. I reckon one of them matched with a pick we could get into the second round, without losing a heck of a lot.

I doubt the club would contemplate trading Douglas. The other names could all be possible trade bait for 2013. Which begs the question of what they would be worth?

Yeah that's what i meant. If we are to be any sort of chance in the next few years we must go hard this free agency period. If we don't, we stagnate while the other top 4 contenders improve their lists. Our top 6-8 players are as good as any in league it's our bottom 4-6 of our first choice 22 and depth which is of major concern. If we could bring in 1 top tier player during free agency and then a starting 22,not necessarily top tier, va the trade I would be stoked.

None of the players mentioned would land us a high 2nd round pick.

So I'd guess we'd have to lose 2 or 3 to get close to mid first round. That would be a fair bit of depth to lose for a low double digit pick. So much easier when you only have to dump the worst 2 or 3 on the list to 'buy' into the first 2 rounds. Let's hope free agency and a heap of cap slace can bear some fruit for us.

This isn't SuperCoach trade week - trading 3 pieces of coal doesn't get you a diamond in return.

Trading all of those wouldn't get us into the early 2nd round, it would just get us a glut of 3rd round picks.

Fair enough. So you're saying that it is impossible to replace our lost draft picks with anything other than top 15 players or rated kids. Which we would have no intention of trading and wouldn't improve our list anyway.

The competition has now become so tight that it is now a game of centimeters. Just look at how good the lists of the top 10 teams are at the moment. The lack of opportunity to improve our list in line with our direct opposition has left us a step behind the rest of our competition. Due to not having picks to move we might have missed out on trades that we otherwise would have made. A couple of the kids that got drafted last year (which we would have been in a position to pick up) may turn out to be significant contributors for their respective clubs. In short we have given ground to our opposition and we are now playing catch up.

We won't have good picks to deal this year either so trades will be out of the question barring another defection (which is not unlikely based on current form). The only way we can hope to even get back to some sort of level playing field is by being extremely aggressive during free agency. If you are out of contract, have an ounce of talent and fit the necessary criteria then representatives from the AFC should be in your ear as I am typing this. We have a short window of opportunity in which we have a large amount of cap space and no obligation to give picks back to opposition teams for poaching their players (this loophole will be closed within a few years). Realistically we aren't going to get a FA like Buddy but good role players and others that can instantly improve our squad (e.g. Betts) should be approached and signed. Identify areas of weakness and fill them via free agency. Our recruiting options are limited at best so this is the only way that we can even hope to keep up. IMHO failure to do so will hurt this club immensely, we might not feel the effects for 5-10 years but we will feel it eventually (think back to the black hole of recruiting during the Fantasia years and you get the idea).

If you want to get a 1st round draft pick, or a player of that value, then we have 2 options:
  • Free Agency
  • Trade a player worthy of a 1st round draft pick (Martin, Jaensch etc are not even close)
We have bucketloads of salary cap space available, so hopefully we should be able to lure a FA or two.

Entrenched isn't a word I'd use.

He was close to being dropped and finished the season pretty poorly last year. I'd say he's more a fringe player, currently in but could equally be out, just as there are a bunch of other smalls who are currently out but could equally be in.

Matthew Wright is a good example of someone who entrenched himself in the best 22 last year.

What rubbish. Suggest you read Sando's comments in todays press. Or go back to his comments before the prelim last year.

Petrenko is very obviously a favourite of the coach and will play if fit.

I would. Barring injury (or the introduction of the interchange cap) he will be a permanent fixture in the squad this year.

According to who? Sando seems to rate him extremely highly judging from his post match comments last season and push to have him play asap this year which resulted in his inclusion in the Carlton game. Even last year in the finals with the threat of another shoulder problem Sando included Pets in the squad when Riley (playing a similar role) and made a good account of himself in the lead-up games. Pets is a nightmare for anyone who cares about stats but he does the little things that help us win (e.g. check out his bump that lead to Jenkins 1st goal in the game against Carlton).

I reckon Douglas is a bloke that mathced with a 3rd rounder could land a later first early second rounder.
I also feel he could be replaced by a Lyon or Kerridge.

I wasnt saying that any of those blokes alone would bring in much. But matched with a pick we could move up the board.
LT and a pick to a team wanting a KPD - could get us into the second round for example.

Douglas trade worth is interesting. He is a first round draft pick who has played over a 100 games. Surely we should be expecting a late first rounder or a early second rounder at the very least? If not, why is he a lock in our side? Shouldn't we be playing players who could develop into that worth? Look at our core mids, Thommo, Danger, Sloane and Crouch would all command a first rd pick at least. The only thing stopping Thommo would be his age. If Wellingham went for a late first rounder you'd expect someone would pay similar for Vince. Wright is new on the scene but his stocks are rising, will be interesting where he ends up.
