UDRS and future statistics

This is the problem I see with the UDRS- the lack of consistency from the 3rd umpire. You have situations where sometimes hot spot comes up with nothing yet batsman are given out by Snicko, other times the same thing happens but the batsman is not out. They need a clear set of RULES not guidelines on decisions like they do with LBW (except for the 2.5 metre rule).

There was a clear flare on hot spot when the ball went past the bat but none of the commentators mentioned it.

yeah i thought i saw a flash. looked like it was on the back of the bat? but they don't take flashes, needs to be a clear spot. i thought the noise was enough. way too reliant on hotspot for my liking.

Above is some insight into Tendulkar and BCCI's view on UDRS.

Key issues:
-consistency in application
-the ball tracking technology used is the key concern

Tendulkar basically said he is in support of UDRS if Hot spot + snicko is a pre-requiste + issues with ball tracking removed.

I found it interesting to read the BCCI president said he has told the ICC they are okay with Hot Spot and Snicko but do not trust the ball tracking technology.

Surely the ICC could compromise- use UDRS for everything apart from ball trjectory (where it is umpires call).
the consitency and that Hot Spot and Snicko must be used).

Also Hot Spot can be infused with ball tracking which sounds promising.

EDIT: Apparently Snicko nor Hot Spot is on the minimum requirements for UDRS? What exactly do you need? Just Hawkeye + replays as a minimum.

They need to make Hotspot mandatory as a pre-requestite for UDRS.

Compromise should def. happen. i mean even just replaying the thing in question could be good enough. the DRS is in place to get rid of the really bad calls, a simple replay can do that really. "oh that hit the bat, not out". We don't need to bring in every bit of technology.

That said saying they don't trust Hawkeye but do trust Snick-o is, to me, a bit absurd.

im in agreeance here. i think it should be the umpires call as to whether the dismissal or non-dismissal is reviewed.

UDRS is there:
- to get rid of that awful lbw call where they smash it
- the dodgy ones when a spinner is operating with fielders around the bat.

Jimbo Anderson has been moaning about the hotspot..
Saying Batsmen are putting vaseline on the edge of the bats to try and beat the hotspot..
Not sure what to think about that claim .

Well, the only change room he's in is the England one. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if they're doing it. When Ian Bell smashes it and hotspot doesn't pick it up there has to be something going on. Either they're cheating or hotspot is a bit of a dud.

England really do seem to try a lot of stuff. Shining the ball in a dodgy manner, throwing jelly beans on the pitch (that one backfired), who knows with Vaseline dodginess. I also remember reading they were trying to make special pants so the ball would shine more.

Ha. Jimmy Anderson is saying it, so the Poms are cheating? As for the pants, that was New Zealand and the only reason it didn't happen was cause it conflicted with their clothing sponsor.

Hotspot only failed once in the entire ashes series for a call which didnt really matter. Just gave bell the chance to score about 40 more runs in a dead rubber game.

In the current test Anderson had a situation where snicko showed edge ,but hotspot showed nothing to a Sri lanka batsmen .
