Joel Selwood is 6 standard deviations from the mean, ie a real outlier, that means you are 1 in 506,797,346 outside the observed data. Selwood is regularly 6 standard deviations from the mean/average player when it comes to getting free kicks over a season.

I have written about Selwood, using the stats and graphics produced by The Arc, who has his own blog site and has written a chapter in the new book footballistics, and sometimes posts on big footy. See his graphics and stats about Selwood at these 2 posts.

It's time to put the snipers on top of the scoreboard and let them shoot rubber bullets into the arse of these ****.en dills.

Marshall gets cleaned up 57m from goal and is awarded a 50m penalty. He was the goal side of the 50m/45 degree mark. The stupid umpire #20 has about 40 seconds to step out the distance to the 50m arc and then how many were left and if he had half a brain he would work out that is 43m which puts Marshall in the square and then goes straight in front. But no, he marks Marshall 20m or so out. Marshall still dazed missus the goal. #20 continued to make stupid decisions after that for the rest of the quarter or two.

How ****ing easy is it to work out the correct position in that situation.Oh but it's a tough job.

Nicholls paid plenty of dumb ones as well. He got one head high hit, think to Robbie Gray right. # 30 McInnery at times in the first half was umpiring like he was in Hobart 2013 style.

4 of them didn't make any improvements

And in the second half blokes on both sides were being smashed in packs running into each other, coming off with the blood rule and they completely missed the contact because they all wanted to follow the ball around the park rather than get in the right position.

They all got at least $5k for that effort tonight. It might be more but the AFL don't publish the CBA they sign with the umpires like they do with the players.

No need to publish it, the AFL enjoy them staying unaccountable.

First half we got 11 v 17 frees. 2nd half it was 19 v 7. I think Melbourne fans will be complaining more than us but that 50m to Marshall just shows how incompetent these part timers really are.

Replace "rubber" with "lead" and replace "arse" with "genitals".

Watched the game replay and thought I'd make some specific notes on a fair few of the umpiring decisions (the big ones anyway). Ignore the poor spelling and grammar as they were quite quick.

Thought the umpiring was actually quite good, some big moments but overall some very good calls. For your information, I use to umpire SANFL and even once trialed to be an AFL umpire. Never quite got a look in but did get exposed to all the review systems and how they all go about their business. Two of the umpires tonight were actually from Adelaide, both of whom I use to umpire with a fair bit. Both are very good all round people and umpires.

If you are interested, below are some of my notes. If I missed a decision/missed free kick, let me know what time of the game it was, and Ill go back and have a look and tell you what I think.

Q1
15.40 HTB paid against Polec, incorrect as he had no prior opportunity. Very hot.

15.16 Ryder gave away high tackle. Correct call.

8.24 DOB against Port. Correct call. The trigger for the umpire would be, why didn’t Port player kick to the centre?

7.52 Probably HTB that should have been paid against Port. Definitely more HTB than the Polec one, but probably no prior opportunity.

7.28 50m penalty paid to Marshall. Correct decision. Maybe a little soft, but in those ones always err on side of ball player. 50m penalty a bit short. Assuming you’ve never made a mistake REH :p? The bigger mistake was probably Marshall missing it (he gets paid a lot more than 5k a game as well). Should these snipers shoot him as well?

7.03 Downfield against Port. Correct call. Soft and stupid decision by Port player to knock player down. Umpires are always all over those ones.

4.58 Kicking in danger to Melbourne. Couldn’t see on telecast, but seemed reasonable. Kick the thing up!

3.49 Ryder had a free against after a goal. Correct call. Stupid and undisciplined from Ryder. Almost cost a goal. Get your retaliation in first!

2.54 Robbie throw paid against. Correct free kick.

0.16 Ebertt gets a free kick from a Melbourne throw, almost exactly like the Gray one. Good consistent umpiring.

Quarter 2

11.50 Dixon paid HTB. A bit 50/50 but probably a fair call.

11.00 Wingard paid a mark on boundary. Wrong decision, Wingard scores goal, very lucky.

9.00 Mark paid to Melbourne. Man infront everytime time. Good call. For those listening to BT saying this isn’t a rule. Please ignore him. It’s a rule.

8.20 High against Gray. Correct. Crowd starting to get very angry.

6.40 Obvious HTB paid against Ollie Wines. Correct. A Melbourne player then tries to shepherd Wines on the mark, and the Melbourne player played on. Umpire made the correct decision to reset the mark. The Port faithful might need to learn that rule (judging from reaction).

6.10 – HTB paid to Wines. A little lucky but just there.

6.03 Jonas free kick for blocking. Correct. Good 50m as well.

5.27 HTB correct. Boner was tackled before the line after have prior opportunity. Clear free kick.

5.00 Port fans going mental. No idea why.

3.00 Block against SPP. Correct call. SPP no eyes for the ball. Port fans treating the umpires like crap. This quarter they’ve been very good and not bad overall.

1.34 Seriously port fans? Definitely not HTB and the ball is clearly out.

Quarter 3

8.10 - Free kick to Wingard for holding, bit soft, but probably fair enough. Definitely not 50m (unless something happened off the ball.

7.30 – DOB to Port, great call. Crowd loved it.

7.20 – Crowd wanted free kick for push to Robbie. Correct call play on. Gray staged for it, and no actual hands in the back.

2.00 – Thomas block, free kick Melbourne. Good call.

Quarter 4

15.20 - Poked in eye. Maybe a bit harsh. Probably fair though as Melbourne player did swing his arm. Wingard took kick.

15.00 - Ebertt push on the goal line. Obviously push. Good call

10.26 – Wines given free for high tackle. Did not see it, seemed very soft!

9.35 - SPP gave away a push in back. Soft, incorrect free kick.

9.06 – Sliding (below knees) free kick to Jasper. Very good free kick called. Good umpiring.

7.11 – Deliberate. Good free kick. Crowd don’t like it, but wont get much more obvious than that. Free kick to Melbourne on the wing.

5.39 – Anytime you think Port crowds don’t have an effect on the umpiring, replay this one over and over. Personally would not pay it, quite soft. In order to save face the umpiring department will probably say correct though (similar to the West Coast high against Polec in the final last year). Westhoff kicks the goal. Personally think the Outer Army deserve the credit.

4.19 – Probably should have been a mark to Marshall. Considering what they paid early anyway. Inconsistent.

1.44 – Good call not to pay mark to Melbourne. Reckon it was a double grab. Completely different to others.

Both the marks at the end were very clear marks I thought.

Umpiring was all over the place and 54 free kicks in a game is ridiculous. The holding the ball decisions and non-decisions just feel going to the casino. Nobody knows how they are gonna be paid.

There is no law or rule in the game about the man in front being awarded the mark. It’s a convention...based on the idea that in a pack situation the player in front has committed himself to the ball more.

In the situation you are referring to, it should have been a ball up because both players had control of the ball and one canceled out the other.

This is such Gieschenesque nonsense.

"Assuming you've never made a mistake?"

The dickhead gave Marshall what amounted to a 35m penalty. "But Marshall missed and he's getting paid more than $5,000".

Yeah... If you can't get that right you shouldn't umpire at the level.

Nice effort! Great work there, mate. I would love to see it more often.

Still, if you allow me a suggestions the standard for revision shouldn't be your own; at least, not at first. Those calls AND NO-CALLS must be primarily measured against one another. What would be the definition for HTB, DoB, marks, high tackles, fifties, etc., given by the umpires during the game?

Players don't need to adjust to our opinion regarding the rules, not even AFL's, but to the way the particular game they are playing is actually being called. Inconsistent calls make such an adjustment impossible. Thus, there is a necessity for the umpires to be consistent; which is prior to their duty to make the right calls.

Having said that, could you say how consistent the umpires were in this game? Did they call HTB similarly throughout the game? And how about DoB? And marks, etc.?

My daughter, GranFormaggi and I went nuts at the Marshall 50 metres. There are so many hecken lines on a Footy oval these days you should not stuff up measuring that distance.

That's a 50 to Westshoff 100/100 times. Mcdonald just barrelled into him to make him earn it.Wasn't really in that contest.

Not a bad summary apart from that but the reason the crowd was going crazy is that everyone in my section recognised Nicholls as 'The Bald cheat' as soon as he walked out. They are on edge from the word go. No other umpire has that sort rep.

Secondly Melbourne were allowed to try and break tackles and then throw the ball out bunch of times in the first half. That was my main gripe.

Appreciate the effort you have put into this but you would know that most of the frustration demonstrated by supporters are as a result of the decision to not pay a free kick when one is warranted and there were a lot of those last night.

Onto the Marshall pay v Umpires pay.

As I mentioned in another thread the measurement of 50 metres should be the easiest thing to get right when we have so many lines that reflect 50 metres of distance. There should be no errors made in these instances.

The 4-umpire system has so far seen 399 free kicks paid in 8 games, an average of 49.875 per game. You might as well say 50, that will be the average after 1 or 2 more games anyway. Over rounds 1-12 the average was 42. As everyone on non-AFL-affiliated programs has said, more frees is ruining the game. The Sunday Footy Show has been conspicuous in their silence on this subject, Kane Cornes was pretty scathing on FootySA but said nothing on The Sunday Footy Show, giving the impression he'd been told to toe the line.
When will the AFL realise this was a failure? The answer is they already do but will never admit to an error, instead the line will be shock, horror, we did not realise so many frees were being missed.

Couldn't believe that Robbie wasn't paid one at the Riverbank end in the third quarter when he was cleaned up from behind. Umpires must have some kind of playbook that says if there are not definite hands in the back against Robbie then he must have caused the free himself. He probably did prop a bit but he was driven into the ground by the demon defender leaping all over him, what is more obvious than that?
And just to complete the point that the umpires had no idea, they did not pay Melbourne their most obvious free of the night when one of their players was grabbed around the neck in front of goal in the last minute.

Just in response to a few comments:

“Never made a mistake yourself” comment.
Just relax, tounge and cheek (if that is the expression?). Yes the umpire made a mistake by approx 7 meters (paid about 43 by my look). Yes the umpire needs to get these right, particular in front of goal. I merely suggest that calling for that umpire to be shot is not a great thing to write on a public forum. REH might say it was also toungue and cheek, by I would suggest he is better then those type comments. I also suggest that he would have made mistakes in his life, and would probably be offended if someone said he should be shot for it. No big deal though!

Giechen Dribble
Really not exactly what is mean by this. More than happy to debate anything I have written and reviewed. I don’t think anything of my analysis is completely that far off. In terms of not getting it right, shouldn’t be umpiring at that level, would you also agree that if a player cant kick a goal from around 25 meters out on a very slight angle (who is being a a lot more per game) then he should also not be playing at that level?

Westhoff 50
Ill concede it was 50/50 at best. There are so many times this kind of thing does not go paid. What absolutely got that decision over the line was the Port faithful. Well done! Had this happened on the Outer at Optus oval against West Coast, no way that decision gets paid.

Robbie Riverbank Push 3rd Quarter
I suggest you re watch. No hands in back, no real force coming from Melb player. Robbie just fell when he knew the ball would go over his head. Personally think it was a good call.

4 Umpire System
Agree it is probably unnecessary. Has led to more unwarranted free kicks, however has meant less missed free kicks (have heard this directly from the AFL umpires boss before). Probably agree with your analysis of how the AFL umpiring department work in these things. Make it up as you go along.

Melbourne Throwing Ball
Did not see this myself, can you point to an example?

Consistency
Overall not bad. One thing I didn’t really do a lot of is write about missed free kicks. I personally didn’t actually see any, but only really watched closely when the umpire blew the whistle. I think 53 free kicks is an indication they possibly over umpired than under umpired, meaning there were probably not that many missed anyway.
I thought the HOB, DOB was pretty consistent. The htb’s that people got frustrated about were mostly for diving on the ball, which I thought were correct. DOB also seemed fair. Thought there were 4-5 questionable marks throughout the game which was not paid 100% consistently. All tough calls but unfortunately umpires did not nail them.

Man in front
Not a convention, an interpretation. Based on the spirit of the laws. Much more than a gentleman’s agreement. It’s fair interpretation and is applied very consistently among umpires. Disagree that it should have been a ball up. One player clearly had hands on it in front.

Last night at half time the North v Bulldogs game had 28 free kicks. At one point in the last quarter there were only 36, prompting James Brayshaw to say that someone had addressed it at half time and he liked less free kicks. The trouble was this comment came just before a blatant high contact free was missed and two 50/50 marking interference ones were paid. Looks like the umpires may have got the memo but thought they would fix it by holding back on paying the right free kicks. Later there was a real howler when Majak Daw bumped a player who had fumbled a mark and gave away a free for mark interference, although the mark was not even being taken.
