Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

Great analysis.
A difficult question would be how many obvious free kicks were missed in our forward line? It is subjective but the obvious counter from oppo support base.

How much game time do we spend with noone in the forward arc? Did SK get frees because they have a persistent forward structure?
Do our guys get caught between the 2 arcs, so thats where we get the frees?

When you're talking holds and ruck infringements, you could call one just about every contest if you felt like it. That was the point I was trying to make. It felt during the game that they were blowing the whistle more for both sides in St Kilda's attacking half and letting the play go a bit more in ours. A free kick inside your attacking 50 is worth 5 on the half back flank.

We had 36-41 inside 50s, so it wasn't an inside 50 domination, it was a pretty close game until they got on top in the last, and none of St Kildas frees or 50m penalties that went inside 50 happened in the last quarter.

I was bored so i did this exercise. I looked at every game between 2013 until now (Since Adelaide Oval)
I wanted to look at the umpires for each game and the frees for and against both at AO and away

Interesting facts...
- Everyone hates Matthew Nicholls but since 2013 we have won 62% of games he has officiated and overall we have frees differential of +0.85 per game with him umpiring. He has also umpired us more than any other umpire in this period. 26 times
- Andrew Stephens is the new topic of discussion. Has umpired us 17 times and we have a frees differential of -2.71 per game. Interestingly though we have won 76% of games he has officiated in
- Brendan Hosking is by far the worst umpire against us. He has umpired in 17 games and has a frees differential of -5.18 per game with pretty much the entire differential being away. At AO it is relatively even. We have still managed to win 65% of games
- Of 47 umpires who have officiated in Port games since 2013, only 14 have a free kick differential in the positives. 4 are even. That leaves 29 umpires with a free kick differential in the negative. Of the 14 that are positive, 3 of them have only umpired us once
- Of the umpires who have umpired us more than 15 games, Leigh Fisher (ex Saints player) has the highest differential at +1.82. We have won all 7 away games with him umpiring and have a 71% win rate with him umpiring

If anyone wants to look at what i did.. see attached

Wow!
wonder who we get this week.

Well obviously Kenny’s comments were the last straw coach-wise. Up to us now.

Some complain in public and get reprimanded, others get apologies and rigged umpiring going their way the next week.

What about an El Scorcho on the outer wing who posts up the running stats of our free kicks so it's there for the audience to see.

Why is it that the AFL try to keep the umpires isolated from any and all criticism? It is practically a taboo subject.

In every other sport, the media, players, coaches etc are all allowed to express their opinion on certain calls. Sure, they might get a fine if they cross the line to the point that it gets malicious. But umpires shouldn't be off limits in terms of criticism or questioning certain decisions.

What does the AFL gain by keeping them in that little bubble? It seems to antagonise everyone. Are the umpires that precious that they can't cope with the pressure of actually being held accountable by their workplace peers?

Because its hard to get people umpiring sport so if they copped it hard that would turn people off becoming an umpire?

or the rules of the game are that ambiguous that its nearly impossible for umpires to adjudicate properly and with any consistency so its unfair to smash umpires over interpretations of rules that are full of grey areas?

they are the only things i can come up with

Tucking it under the bed makes it easier to Hide the corruption the sport has towards Victorian sides or their yearly glamour team.

we’re umpired to exist not win

Just imagine going into a game knowing that the umpires have your back , you can do no wrong, you go into the game as arrogant af ,as the Saints players did , you would rarely lose .
Needs to be called out as corrupt.

This is excellent, thanks.

I have to ask, when was the game umpired by Justin Power where we had a +15 free kick differential, and who were the other umps that day?

St Kilda complain about umpiring - here, have 6 free kicks inside 50

Port complain about umpiring - league wide directive to cease and desist all commentary on umpiring

lol.

It's all about media narrative though. Our only vocal media identity is hated contrarian Kane Cornes. Tredders is strictly a news man for the most part.

Where are all the "Oh gee Port have been really hard done by here" from the commentators during a game? It's non-existant. People watch games and they follow along with what the commentators tell them, so if they are constantly being told that the umps are screwing a side, chatter gets up and about and the AFL feel like they need to control the narrative.

Can you imagine if Hawthorn got 38-15'd? The commentators would be slamming the state of umpiring and the game in general left right and centre. With us I doubt it was even raised in the commentary.

It's not surprising to see Steve Hocking's response. When Hinkley called out the Jenkins poster, Gill even weighed in during the week to say Hinkley was wrong.
Are you serious? Yet when Clarko complained he backed him.
****ing Vic bias there for ALL to see if they bother opening their eyes.
Gill probably didn’t even watch our game to see for himself.

As I recall the only comment during the game was when North Melbourne had a dubious one paid against them (Brad Scott did his 'umpiring incompetence' face and the commentators reacted). We all raged that day but barely a word was said about it.
