Roast Umpiring: Corruption or Incompetence, or both

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Umpires have become so gutless in the last 2 minutes of the game to pay a blatant free yet they ocassionally pull a blue mooner out of their arse in the last 2 minutes.

Its time to give the captains the option to review 1 maybe 2 decisions for each side in the last 2 minutes. If they are correct then like cricket DRS they keep their review.

The major ball sports around the world have introduced video review systems or use a hawkeye type computer generated review.

I dont want reviews all match. The goal review shows how much time is wasted, but the critical last 2 minutes use the video to eliminate the bad errors.

A decision review in the AFL would just turn into a giant cluster **** because every rule surrounding the most contentious decisions in a match are so open to interpretation. Nothing is completely black and white like in other codes, and more often than not it would just be one person's opinion over ruling another person's opinion. Far too subjective.

Imagine the commentary going off when a high tackle to a west coast player gets reversed against us cos he is a ducking campaigner.

Great idea. It’s so obvious they feel too much pressure in a tight match with little time left. They freeze. Take it out of their hands.

Doesnt matter how subjextive the rules are.. Eliminate the bloody blatant **** upsin the last 2 minutes. Its the only way a bit of accountability will ever be introduced.

have a 2 minute warning bell where rules go out the window for the remainder of the match and it becomes an open slather thunderdome. :)

Ah, but apart from the official footage, it seems old Abe Zapruder took his trusty Super8 to the game and catured some additional vision...

Fresh vision ends debate over controversial Crows deliberate non-call
The AFL was in uproar after the umpires appeared to gift the Crows a get-out-of-jail-free card — and now a fresh angle has emerged.

There might be a few apology letters arriving at the AFL umpiring department this week.
Fresh vision of the most controversial call of the weekend has emerged and it lets the whistleblowers off the hook after the dramatic conclusion to the Crows’ thrilling one-point win against the Demons on Saturday evening.

late on Saturday night Fox Sports unearthed a boundary side angle of the decisive moment and it changed everything.

As Murray handballed the ball, Melbourne opponent Charlie Spargo’s hand appeared to come in contact with the ball.

It wasn’t completely obvious and there will be many who will argue there isn’t clear evidence of Spargo’s intervention.

But even the most diehard Demons fans has to concede there’s enough grey area to defend the umpire’s non-decision.

Yeah, so having watched that, his hand didn't touch the ball, it touched the arm ever so lightly, if at all.

They're incompetent mate. They're actually ruining the product, and they continue to escape criticism.

It's not that hard, I remember playing footy at local level when I played for 10-12 years and finished up in 2012 I & my teammates knew the rules when we crossed the white line to play, and we were umpired by two guys each club provided for our games, until finals when they bought proper umpires in. There was no grey areas, the rules were rules and we knew them, simple as that. We got some shocking calls for & against but that's to be expected from amateur umpires.

Fast forward from there to attending or watching the elite level of the game either at the ground or on tele you have no idea what the bloody rules are anymore. The umpires are that confused, or blatantly incompetent that obvious frees get missed, or ridiculous one's get plucked out of nowhere. In the Freo/Sydney game last night McCartin gave away a clear push in the back free, apologized for it and was called play on, then Buddy got a ridiculous free kick that wasn't one by the same umpire at the same end of the ground the following quarter. So either the umpire was star struck by Franklin and paid him a free, or he has no idea what he's actually doing. In a close game that can influence the result.

Come the last two minutes of tight games the umpires just shrink from making decisions, the Crows had two lucky ones go their way, one leading to Walker's goal, and the deliberate out of bounds with 20 seconds to go. So they've influenced that result as well.

It's pure incompetence and a legacy of being immune to criticism. They aren't held to account for it, so nothing will ever change. It's destroying the game and from my point of view making a lot of games unwatchable.

There were two great games yesterday in the Crows/Melbourne & Freo/Sydney, and one was directly influenced by umpiring incompetence, the other almost was. That can't continue to happen, but the AFL won't do a damn thing about it as they're to gutless and weak, and they're part of the issue with their directive of a rule of the week they implement.

It's a huge issue in the game but nothing gets done about it, instead the AFL will implement some ridiculous rules change to speed the game up or something pointless, instead of fixing a root cause of a lot of the issues in footy.

If it means Dixon can put Flogarty on his ass with no repercussions from the tribunal then I 100% support this idea.

It’s corruption, it’s ridiculous it’s never going to change.

You'd have to be pretty naive to take notice of how much betting has infiltrated the broadcasts and not think that money plays a huge outcome in the way games are officiated.

Not only this but the AFL is completely revenue driven.

I've said it a few times before, but their number 1 aim is protect the team that brings in more revenue come finals time.

Their second aim is to "even up" contests because blow outs are not a good look for the game. Then they'll pat themselves on the back for how even the competition is.

I always think back to that home game against Hawthorn in 2015 when they hadn't kicked a goal to half time. Start of the third and they get two free kicks in front of goal for no reason that anybody could ever explain.

Gambling, viewing figures, multi billion dollar tv deals etc.
There’s nowhere on earth where that much money is involved and there’s no corruption.

I'd still put my money (so to speak) on incompetence mostly, given that Aussie Rules is one of the most difficult codes to officiate, especially with the AFL's constant tinkering with the rules and interpretations, and that the umpires are only part-timers. Then there's egos that come into it - the weaker ones may be intimidated by the home crowd, or react to what players say to them, while narcissists like Razor want to make the game all about themselves. Inherent bias or even favouritism would be as close as I'd get to calling the umpires corrupt - I don't think financial considerations come into it, unless there's an individual ump who might have money issues.

The AFL have enough ways to fix the competition to their ends without having to get the umpires to do their dirty work.

But incompetence makes corruption way worse.

I don't usually like to fall into the "that would've been paid against us for sure" victim mentality, but that would've been paid against us for sure.
The way umpires are bottling it in front of home crowds at crucial moments this year, I'm not sure they would have. Not at AO, anyway.

What I'm really curious to know is whether the deliberate rushed behind against Robbie would've been paid if it had happened at the MCG.

My slowness in adjusting to new rules is colouring my interpretation of incompetence.
For instance when I played the game, grabbing a player by the lower arm when he was in possession (and attempting to handball) was almost a blue ribbon technique for getting a HTB decision in your favour. Now I see instances of "no prior opportunity" where this happens. I do not agree.
