That free kick differential is crazy - although it will be explained away by statements that the Tigers play hard, on the edge tough footy that tends to concede more free kicks to the opposition.
I can actually cop that.

But I don't understand why we miraculously receive less free kicks at the same time.
Do other teams suddenly play a much less combative and 'fairer' style when they come up against us?

We sit stone motherless last for 'Free's For' = 326 YTD or 17.15 per game

Anyone know the free kick stat for the last quarters where we have been in front and lost ? Seems to be when we really get screwed.

The last quarter when the game is on the line is when the umpires go dry on us like a camel’s armpit.

Obviously we all dislike how much Shocking has made the umpires' job way more difficult with his clueless tinkering, but the too wide range for holding the ball decisions is the rule for this year that has probably shat me off the most and hurt us the most often.

It wouldn't be at all difficult to find 100 times this year where we've pinned a player who has very clearly dropped the ball cold and play on has been called. Incorrect disposal is incorrect disposal - doesn't matter one iota whether they had prior opportunity or not. They weren't 50/50, or 20/80, or in any way explainable, they were all just flat out horrible, incorrect interpretations of the rule.

We literally never get the same interpretation in the same game going our way and there was over half a dozen instances again on the weekend. I long ago lost count of how many times where it's been a 50/50 call whether or not one of our players got a correct disposal (glancing contact with the ball which could easily be deemed a disposal) and it goes against us every single time.

Price of success I guess. It's a pretty huge chunk of the free kick differential right there with these subjective calls and flexible holding the ball interpretations ALL going against us. They hurt enormously when it means a 100m swing from one end of the ground to another as so often eventuates.

On Sunday we even had an entire new rule interpretation apparently invented just for us 'WA umpiring' style - 'if you choose to kick off the ground and it goes OOB, you're gone.' o_O

Watching the Boomers killing it in the basketball, it crossed my mind that it was surprising Shocking didn't bring a 'shot clock' into the game if his supposed aim was to increase scoring.

Then of course, reality set it in and I realised how little that rule would suit Geelol's brand of football. ;)

Shocking would not have watched that game against Argentina last night - would have been too physical for him! Didn't the refs put the whistle away for some of that 50/50 aggressive D?!

As horrendous as the umpiring has been this year, the gong for the worst decision of the sporting year must go to the referee who disallowed Kerr’s goal against Sweden… disgraceful!

Made me wonder if the Olympic umpiring fraternity is similar to the AFL - the word went out to just let stuff go after that disgraceful call in the Opals match by a ref nowhere near the contest. ;)

Shocking was busy that night, he was over at O'Gormless' place where they regularly catch up, painting diagonal yellow stripes on the back of flies then getting all hot and bothered together pulling the wings off them.

Didn't think it was possible to think less of SHocking than I did - and winner is Rayzorwire!!!!! :D

Sorry, is there a ball sport other than AFL??

After watching plenty of sports during the Olympics, I realise how very few other sports have rules as open to interpretation as AFL.

Soccer, hockey, rugby all have some offside rules, but simple enough.
Soccer also has the deciding whether player is taking a dive or its legit.
Personally I can never tell who is doing the charging in basketball but players rarely have issues with the call.

The interpretation of rules in AFL, which often favours one team is one of the things that makes the game hard to watch.

Players often have issues with this call (and others for that matter), but given at FIBA run contests, if they argue, then get a Tech foul, it costs their team AND the tech goes against their personal foul tally of which they only have 5.... Way too big a risk to argue the point when there is no benefit to doing so.
